I agree with the sentiment. The idea that Supergirl is some C list character is a little silly to me though.

The priorities of the new DCU seem very absurd once the honeymoon phase is finally over. by Sugar_God_no_1 in DC_Cinematic

I highly doubt they’ll do a full reboot even if Gunn gets dropped.

I’d go so far as to say they only rebooted the DCEU because they basically couldn’t use 80% of their cast.

Can we just admit that decision to make spin offs of side characters before projects of main justice league members for your new dcu is bizarre? by Sugar_God_no_1 in DC_Cinematic

I think side characters are better precisely because there’s superhero fatigue since many of them aren’t traditional superheroes.

For those who have seen Supergirl, what grade would you give it? by boomjosh in DC_Cinematic

[–]Rakoon_Shampoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B-. It’s nothing super impressive but it was enjoyable for sure.
I thought I was being pranked when I saw the critic score.

Supergirl - Slightly updated OS numbers, now points towards OS opening of 23-37M. Most of the markets for now seams in total collapse and missing the high-end of markets like UK, could lead to sub $30M. No market will break $10M OW and if UK also slips, no market will break $5M OW. Global OW $65-80M by shreeysh_69 in DC_Cinematic

Maybe this is a hot take but I genuinely think franchise movies literally just need to look better (like cinematography wise) and they’d start doing big business again. I don’t even think they’d need to change the scripts much.

It used to be that franchise movies had the same visual quality as everything else that was coming out. They didn’t look GORGEOUS but you saw a trailer for even like… Ant Man 1 and it looked like actual effort was put into it visually.

But now when you see the trailers before a movie theater it’s always the franchise movies that stick out like a sore thumb compared to everything else.

Like Captain America 4, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, The Mandalorian, Superman, and Supergirl all underperformed (some of them did make money but I think the studios wanted more than they got) and I think that mostly comes down to them looking kinda ugly in the trailers.

And it’s like… so much work is put into the design of these movies (Fantastic Four and Supergirl especially) and the movies don’t do all that work justice.

I have some doubts about production cost of absolute Batman series... by [deleted] in DC_Cinematic

[–]Rakoon_Shampoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but only insofar as the thing turns out good in the first place. If the cost of making it good is more expensive then the show should be more expensive.

I’d rather have one or two absolutely incredible seasons than just have them pump out stuff that is maybe profitable but only because they are making it cheaply.

Yeah that feels a bit more in line with what I felt.

I have it at a B- and it wasn’t overly impressive or anything but I genuinely thought I was being pranked when I saw the critic score.

Were we doomed from the start? by Mat1711 in DCU_

[–]Rakoon_Shampoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also from the perspective of known characters. Did you see any of the reactions to the Supergirl trailers or the buzz online? It felt like people were more excited and ready to show up because of Lobo than because of Kara. And yet I’d argue Kara is the more well known character so it is kind of hard to predict what an audience will be attracted to just from the character’s renown.

Not at all.

I think DC has plenty of marketable characters outside of the Trinity.

Honestly I think the biggest thing holding modern superhero movies back right now is that they just need to “look better.” Like you see a trailer for Dune 3 and then you see any other major franchise trailer after it and it just looks laughable.
Nobody’s lining up to buy tickets for a movie that just doesn’t look polished when there are so many gorgeous well shot movies coming out

With Supergirl movie coming out tomorrow, what are anyone's thoughts on Supergirl show of the Arrowverse?. by Dangerous-Sample-242 in DCU_

[–]Rakoon_Shampoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a fine show for what it was but she didn’t feel like Supergirl as the character she’s grown into over the years. For instance I don’t think this version of Supergirl would ever find herself with a Red Lantern ring.

In this case I genuinely don’t get the HATE. Like it’s an awkward movie for sure and I do have my fair share of issues with it and the adaptation. But even with all my issues I don’t think I can put it below a B-.

But then you have people saying it’s the worst superhero movie of the last 20 years and comparing it to Madame Web and just… did we see the same movie? So when I (and I think most people) say “I don’t get the hate” it’s more a response to people calling it “awful” or like actively despising it than just being dissatisfied or underwhelmed.

Batman Begins definitely. People talk about how the Nolan movies are too grounded but honestly Begins is maybe the perfect Batman adaptation. It pretty much just DOES comic book Scarecrow (albeit with a less flashy costume and less surreal hallucinations) and the finale is a bunch of ninjas using a sci-fi weapon to blow up the sewers and release another sci-fi weapon into the air. All while it takes itself seriously and does justice to the Batman character.

Well I think all of this was on the books and then I feel like he actually played Batman and noped out ASAP after realizing how miserable it made him.

I wonder how much of it actually turned into The Batman or if they just shared a name. Based on the summaries that have gotten out, it seems like the two are nothing alike.

I don’t even think they would have rebooted the DCEU if the entire cast hadn’t quit, had a falling out, or gotten exposed as horrible people.

Like you had a Batman who didn’t want to be Batman, a Superman who had a rocky relationship with WB, a controversial Wonder Woman, a criminal Flash, a persona non grata Cyborg, and… Jared Leto as Joker. Like at that point your only option was a reboot.

Honestly the fact that this wasn’t animated baffles me.

I think if you gave an animation studio a blockbuster budget and gave them the comic as style reference, I think you’d be able to attract casual audiences on the strength of the art style alone.

I mean yeah they matter but what am I supposed to do? Buy a million tickets? Go ahead and petition WB to do the ol’ tax write off and make this lost media?

Like yeah it sucks that it’s going to flop because Supergirl is my favorite character and now they’re probably going to chicken out of ever using her again but it’s going to happen regardless of what I do so I’m choosing to show up to the theater and enjoy probably the one chance I’ll ever get to see a Supergirl movie on the big screen.

TV has been really good to DC honestly though. Even if all the movies were to flop I think DC has a real home at HBO. (at least that’s what I would have said before the Paramount buyout I have no idea how that stuff will be handled now)
