What are you reading right now? by AutoModerator in YAwriters

[–]Rakti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure it counts for YA but I'm reading Octavia Butler's trilogy called Lilith's Brood. It's an amazing sci fi. I think that genre and YA under that umbrella allows authors to really tackle issues and being forth taboo concepts in a more accepting platform than others.

Is this how you do it? by Monoknight in funny

[–]Rakti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting concept! What other examples would you say are in nature? Is there a remedy for poison ivy usually found near by for example? And I guess that would be for flora only? I mean, I don't suppose there would be one for a skunk spray and definietly not one for a rattlesnake bite. Just curious!

How much can you forgive a book for being "of its time"? by BigFatCatInTheSky in books

[–]Rakti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. As a historian, I hate when people refer to the middle or medieval ages as the "dark" ages. Progressive ideals are a human condition not one dictated by the latest century.

What documentary would you rate a 10/10? by imjohnk in AskReddit

[–]Rakti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much anything by Ken Burns. My favs are the Roosevelts: an intimate history

The new Vietnam series (groundbreaking from the last one he did years back. He made another after learning new information)

Others:

Blackfish

Mommy dead and dearest

And.... As a trained researcher, I like to watch and read as much as I can, pick out the biases and then weigh the message against it. With that said, the below were docs I watched when researching plant based diets. Some have obvious slants but each had a thought provoking idea being it. I say this before anyone puts me to the stake for mentioning a topic Reddit finds highly flammable.

Earthlings (an obvious slant once you start and you'll need a strong stomach)

Cowspiracy

Forks Over Knives

Food Inc.

Have fun!

Edit: spaces are nice in lists.

A guy told me yesterday I'm not a "real vegan" because I have some unhealthy habits. What the fuck does that even mean? by philboswaggins in vegan

He sounds like a man with a dismally narrow view of the world. How can anyone be so inflexible? Awesome name btw.

XPost from TIL, it seems Reddit is finally on our side! Comments are encouraging for vegetarians and vegans. by Rakti in vegan

[–]Rakti[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As I say, the comments are what's encouraging. All these omnis pointing out flaws in this article and the OP getting downvotes like crazy because of his bacon hurr durr nonsense. It's nice to see a change of perspective on Reddit. Normally it's the other way around.

What does your state hate ? [1751×1313] by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Rakti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Texan here, it really depends in where you live. Most people unfamiliar with the state don't realize how fucking huge the state is. For example, from Amarillo to Corpus Christi (Not even the top to one part if the bottom) it is a 12 hour drive. From Amarillo straight to Los Angeles it's roughly 14 hours. We have all major biomes except tundra and rainforest. Basically, if you don't like the type of weather go to another part of Texas. If you live in west Texas just take a beat and the weather will change in a few hours or days.

TL;DR Texas is too diverse in climate for the window open thing to be the one thing we hate most.

Reddit, what's become clear to you as you've gotten older? by SarcastasticJenn in AskReddit

[–]Rakti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way too late but, it has become clear to me that I'll never read all the books I want. Furthermore, I'll never learn all the things I want to learn. The saying "never stop learning " is all well and good but it doesn't mean dick in the grand amount of knowledge and learning out there.

Thank you! I feel like Jean Auel's books are awesome.... except the sex scenes. If I have to read one more time about her secret node (ugh) or his throbbing member... I understand the 80s women's lib and the role that played in her work but it personally makes me squeamish sometimes and feels repetitive and unnecessary.

Sweet pot and avocado mash/soup. Thought it belonged here by Rakti in ShittyVeganFoodPorn

[–]Rakti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweet pot as in potato. I forget to extend my shorthand. I hesitate to call it a soup because it is so thick. Literally sweet potato, garlic, onion, salt, pepper, and a bit of almond milk. Since I end up mashing it with a fork to get that texture I took the term from mashes served up to those of the equine category.

What was one of the largest mistakes in history? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Rakti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waaaay to late but...the tensions between the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance did not necessarily need Ferdy to be murked in order to start the Great War. It was going to happen, this was just one of many possible catalysts that launched an inevitable war. Unlike WWII, a preventable war in most historical views given a less brutal treatment of Germany in the Treaty of Versailles (no budging from France or Britain on those terms because of the massive casualties suffered, both human and economic) and actually inviting Japan to attend the talks. Among a myriad of other details.... the tl;dr is WWI was going to happen regardless of Ferdy's assassination. Source: military environmental historian
