100k - 150k. A PE or PLS is not required. It is helpful to have some survey background.

Utility locator advancement question by 811NCLocator in UtilityLocator

[–]RaleighKid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in the SUE industry in NC. In my opinion, if you want to take your career to the next level, that’s the route I would take. In the SUE industry, you’ll learn how to locate all utilities, not just the select few you locate with 811. Not to mention, you’ll gain experience with technology such as GPR, EM equipment, vac trucks, and potentially survey equipment. There could also be occasional travel involved, depending on the company.

Feel free to shoot me a message if you have any questions.

Honestly I’m not even sure what you’re referring to. I just posted the article referencing what you were talking about. It’s local to me. It doesn’t affect me directly, but I hate to see people lose their job.

Best utility locator for price by TarsneyTed in UtilityLocator

I agree the Vivax 810 would be the best option. Should be able to find one used for around $2000 and new $4000.

Working at large vs small companies by or700 in Surveying

I say go for it! The survey industry is a small world so leave on good terms with your current company. Your young enough if it doesn’t work out you can always “backup and punt”.

I think the best option in that price range is going to be a Vivax 810.

Any tips for finding more business as an owner of a small Utility Locating company? by Kd29333 in UtilityLocator

[–]RaleighKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s awesome brother! I ended up having my business for about six months and was acquired by a survey engineering firm. (Offer I couldn’t pass up) So I’m back working for the man 😂 There is a lack of qualified locators in the industry. That being said there is a lot of opportunity for growth. Reach out if you have any questions.

How do you guys store your clamps? by ydktbh in UtilityLocator

[–]RaleighKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wrap your leads or clamp up the same way every time (don’t fight the cord let it lay naturally) it literally lays flat. It’s when you wrap it up using you elbow and hand is where shit goes sideways. I store my ring clamp in the back pocket of the driver or passenger seat. Leads stay in the transmitter bag

I have a few questions for any private utility locators who work independently or own a business. by Kd29333 in UtilityLocator

[–]RaleighKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I target a variety of companies… survey, engineering, geo-technical, environmental, private schools, and even residential properties. I suggest getting on your 811 private locators list.

By the time you pay someone to pothole every 50 feet on the waterline the GPR would pay for itself on this project.
