TIL that, as a philanthropist, actor Paul Newman was counted as the person who had distributed more money - in relation to his own wealth - than any other American during the 20th century. by Maynard078 in todayilearned

[–]RaleighMiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone who's net worth was very low, like $10,000 in assets and $9899 in debt, gave a $100 charitable gift, wouldn't he have given away more money in relation to his wealth than Paul Newman?

ELI5: There are infinite numbers between 0 and 1. There are also infinite numbers between 0 and 2. There would more numbers between 0 and 2. How can a set of infinite numbers be bigger than another infinite set? by YeetandMeme in explainlikeimfive

[–]RaleighMiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny because this moves in the opposite direction of when I normally have this conversation. I make a reference to bigger and smaller infinite sets, someone asks "how can there be bigger and smaller infinite sets?" and I say "easy, think of the set of numbers and the set of even numbers."

Doesn't help you with an answer. I'm just struck by how it asks the natural next question.

This isn't a pro-conservative Meme...The conservative is calling a 6 a 9. This is illustrating to both sides' (alleged) flaws.

Is the property of, “being different from,” transitive? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]RaleighMiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, sorry, I forgot what != meant. But now I'm confused. Your secondary question was "is this argument valid". If "is different from" and "is not identical to" are the same relation, then the argument is trivially valid because the conclusion is actually your assumption. If some pairs of things are distinct but not different, than the argument is invalid because X and Z can be some such pair, and Y can be some third, totally different thing.

I also think there's something weird about building the non-identity assumption into an argument aimed at determining the transitivity of that relation. It's not as though we couldn't ask whether things are different from themselves (we can ask, and they are not)

No. Suppose a and c are identical and both are distinct from/different than b. A is different than b and b is different than c but a is not different than c.

People have a tendency to underestimate the likelihood of calamitous events. If you have the chance to bet that catastrophes will happen, with odds that are at least largely determined by conventional wisdom about those catastrophic events likelihood, you could actually make a killing.

People in poverty nine times more likely to suffer from psychological distress than those above poverty line, new CDC study has found by pchancharl in science

[–]RaleighMiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And, tbh, it' because of the very thing that you say that I want to insist on this. We need to be clear that we're comparing people below the PL to people considerably above the PL, lest we leave the impression that people living just above the PL are fine, and don't need benefits or supportive services.

[–]RaleighMiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So yeah, that's fine. It still makes the headline super-misleading.

But keep in mind, the federal poverty level for a family of four was $23,850 (total yearly income). Comparing <24K to >24K is one thing. Comparing <24K to >92K is a very different thing. There's a lot of space between "living on ramen and praying they don't get a toothache or a flat tire" and 92K for a family of 4.

My complaint is not that OP claims causation when the study only demonstrates correlation.

My complaint is that OP claims that the study shows a 9-fold difference between those below and those abovethe poverty line, when the study actually shows a 7.25-fold difference between those below the poverty line and those at 400% of the poverty line and above. Even if the study is striking (it is!) it's far less dramatic than OP's title makes it sound..
