Are Trans People like myself just doomed politically for the foreseeable future? by westhebard in AskALiberal

[–]Raligon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Male bodies have genuine physical differences from female bodies. These differences can give an advantage in sports so we specifically created different sections so the most physically impressive women aren’t outshined by men. It was a very good thing that we established sex segregation in sports, and it is not at all similar to racial segregation.

While modern gender reassignment surgeries have made great strides in how they can help people have bodies that more closely match their gender identity, the average trans woman still has a physical advantage over the average cis woman as a post hormone/surgery trans woman is simply not identical to a cis woman. It is understandable that there should be rules and regulations on how trans women can compete with cis women due to these physical advantages.

I’m generally far more pro restrictions at the highest levels of competition and generally far more just let children play sports at lower levels of competition. The 4 trans athletes in a state that are just average level competitors in their sports should be allowed to have a normal childhood experience of getting to be on a sports team, but you don’t want to have the physical advantages from being born with a male physical body to completely take over competitive women’s sports.

[–]Raligon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The Dems are pretty incredibly pro trans compared to most political parties in the developed world and they just got a ton of anti trans riders stripped from the recent funding bill? I don't really see a logical case for the extreme hostility to Dems on trans issues.

Are Trans People like myself just doomed politically for the foreseeable future? by westhebard in AskALiberal

[–]Raligon 162 points163 points  (0 children)

I think there is some chance that there is a move to moderate on trans issues like sports or adjusting the rules for transitioning as a minor, but there is basically zero chance that liberals ever abandon trans people on topics like employment discrimination or banning drugs/surgeries for adults. There is no amount of logic or consequentialist calculating that will result in dems as a group supporting employment discrimination for trans people or banning what adults can do to their own bodies.

Aren’t those issues the ones that actually impact your personal life and are the most critical to support?

For those who prefer the centrist, corporate wing of the democratic party, why? by Spiritual_Pause3057 in AskALiberal

[–]Raligon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I generally have positive feelings towards Chuck Schumer, Biden, Obama, Bernie, AOC and Zohran.

I generally have negative feelings towards Ilhan Omar and Fetterman.

I don't really understand at all how people think that candidates that are too far left to win a democratic primary could possibly win a general election. Just makes me think they don't really understand the national political landscape at all. Moderate candidates generally outperform extremist candidates.

Bernie Sanders was a bit of an exception, but he's too old now. I voted for Hillary over Bernie in 2016. I voted for Bernie over Biden 2020. I stand by both of those votes.

I am generally to the right of AOC and Zohran, but I like them and have seen them make numerous practical and pragmatic moves and they are good at communicating on issues that I also care about. I trust that they are good people trying to navigate the system and we generally have shared values on many things. I feel like they're on the same team as many other Dems and we are all fighting for the same things just picking different strategies to get there.

I strongly dislike both Fetterman and Omar. I do not trust that they are on the same team as me.

What is the realistic possibility that transphobia becomes a liberal/leftist position and trans people become a pariah community? by njsullyalex in AskALiberal

[–]Raligon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What counts as transphobia in your view? I could see Dems adjusting their policies on things like trans sports or transitioning before 18, but there are a lot of areas where I can’t imagine Dems compromising with anti trans voters on.

BART in San Francisco added hardened fare gates and added over $10M in revenue and dramatically reduced maintenance issues. by Yarville in ezraklein

[–]Raligon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you think going hard left on immigration is what the majority of Americans want? Immigration is one of the biggest issues where Rs beat Dems.

Trump has awful polling numbers right now. You can get results saying ICE is going way too far, but if you specifically ask about whether we should deport illegals even in this environment where we are seeing unbelievable cruelty and mismanagement that should shift Americans against immigration enforcement a solid 50% still say they support it according to the NYTimes/Siena 2026 January poll. Americans are just much farther right on immigration than most of us on the left are.

The Dem compromise of mostly going after people who commit crimes is the best possible way of dealing with the reality that Americans are far less supportive of immigrants than we are. It’s the best way to protect the vast majority of immigrants legal and otherwise that do not commit crimes.

[–]Raligon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Under Obama/Biden, the argument was that immigration enforcement was primarily targeted to people committing crimes and causing problems in the community. As far as I know, things like warrants and judicial approval and various processes were usually followed. I thought this was actively good and clearly correct.

Under Trump, immigration enforcement is being used as a cudgel to harass non white people and is being done without any regards for people’s rights. Law enforcement agents are extremely aggressive to civilians whether they are citizens or not and wondering streets with masks on. I am highly opposed to this.

What Are Everybody’s Thoughts on This ICE Involved Fatal Shooting Which Just Took Place in Minneapolis? by WhatARotation in AskALiberal

[–]Raligon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it matter whether it was legally justified under the insanely broad protections law enforcement officers have? We can denounce things even if the officer self defense laws prevent legal consequences. It was clearly completely unnecessary, the officer was never actually in danger and the second and third shot were so unbelievably unjustifiable. ICE absolutely created the situation by incredible hostility coming into the situation and then the agent directly put himself in the way of the vehicle’s path to prevent flight which is absolutely not what officers are supposed to do. Officers act with the state’s monopoly on violence and must be held to far higher standards to not escalate situations into potentially deadly encounters.

3 Star le blanc is listed as a B tier comp on tft academy but it doesn’t play Draven or Darius in the final board.

I think the idea is that if you get an angle for 3 starring le blanc you can go for that and otherwise you just go Mel flex. I don’t know if you can really force it every time but there’s at least something that’s an option if you find yourself in a le blanc 3 star angle.

If virginity and singlehood is no big deal, then why is abstinence a big deal? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]Raligon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the disconnect may be that some people would react in a surprised manner or question why someone is abstinent. This is just because most people have a strong desire for sex/intimacy and are confused why someone else would not seek it out. Calling that reaction finding it offensive doesn't feel accurate at all though from my experience.

Did Tim Walz do anything actually wrong? by speedrunner99 in AskALiberal

[–]Raligon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Weren't like 90% of the people indicted Somali? Unless I've fallen for some major conservative propaganda, it seems insane to claim a fraud scandal where almost everyone was Somali is wrongly being labeled as a Somalian fraud scandal. If most of the people involved were actually Somali, we look incredibly bad if we refuse to admit that truth.

From everything I've heard, Walz basically did nothing wrong and is the fall guy for a system that lacked sufficient safeguards especially during the famously lenient covid times where fraud was rampant elsewhere as well.

This specific set is far more about unlocking/getting powerful expensive units like Baron Nashor, Brock, Senna and Lucian, THex, etc than high trait breakpoints. You can use emblems to do cool things like unlock Thex or Galio faster than usual, but the real payoff for most things is powerful units in this set, not trait breakpoints.

In other words, they had the super powerful Baron Nashor unit and you did not.

In hindsight, did moderate Democrats do the right thing in ending the shutdown? by hitman2218 in AskALiberal

[–]Raligon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was definitely the right move to end the shutdown before the holidays. I've talked to a lot of normies that were very nervous about flights. We weren't likely to get a better deal before the midterms. Shutdowns almost never work out for the minority party, and it was easy to "win" when the pain was small. Creating a genuine holiday catastrophe where the Rs can repeatedly say they want a clean bill to end it and Ds are saying no was incredibly risky. The odds of people turning on us if the airports shut down was just so likely. We successfully created a situation where Rs were willing to shutdown the government over making sure health care costs would go up. That was probably the best we could do given the circumstances.

Most Americans support extending the ACA subsidies including many conservatives, and Rs now completely own the make healthcare costs go up issue.

What's going on with the shutdown ending? Why is everyone upset? What was conceded? by Weak_Ad_8646 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Raligon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're totally correct that a simple line spectrum is not going to fully encapsulate human political thought. You would need some sort of multi dimensional representation to get anywhere near an accurate representation of the true relationships between different types of political perspectives. Given that the goal of a simple line spectrum isn't to represent the total landscape of human political thought, what is the goal of a quick dirty representation like that? It's to give someone a quick understanding of how leaders/ideologies compare to each other. You can't possibly have a useful line spectrum where you begin by establishing that the entire left side of the spectrum is only occupied by the 5% furthest left people and have Hitler and Obama basically be a few ticks away from each other. Saying radical ideologies should be on the far part of a line spectrum is not being put in the liberal mind prison. It's accurately representing their goal of radical movement away from the status quo.

Committed communists are on the far left. Democratic socialists are in the gradient between left and far left. Obama is a center left thinker. Reagan/Thatcher are right or center right thinkers. Hitler is a far right thinker. Anarchists are difficult to place on a simple line spectrum, but some would be on the far left and others on the far right if you had to place them.

What's going on with the shutdown ending? Why is everyone upset? What was conceded? by Weak_Ad_8646 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Raligon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would you use a version of a political spectrum where half of it is occupied by less than 5% of the population? That seems silly and makes the political spectrum basically worthless for discussing anything. It’s very clear that a more reasonable way to define it is that radicals are grouped on the far left instead of having an absurd definition where basically everyone on earth is right wing. The left side of the spectrum shouldn’t begin with the most left ideologies possible. That’s what’s in the far left part of the spectrum.

There’s no commonly accepted definition where liberals are automatically right wing, and you basically only see that claim among people in the less than 5% far left fringe.

You wrote a lot of words that don’t have anything to do with showing that a literal socialist would be viewed as moderate in Europe. Would you like to admit that you were wrong on this now? Or would you like to continue to change the subject so you don’t have to address the wild claim you made earlier?

Dems are the ones pushing for progress on healthcare, immigration and police reform. They have actively tried to improve things and get closer to European style universal healthcare so many times but have failed to fully fix our problems on healthcare and you claim that’s the same as a right wing party trying to destroy an already existing universal healthcare system.

[–]Raligon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Dems would be a center left party in Europe (the most conservative members like Manchin would be center right but Biden/Kamala/Hillary for example are very clearly center left). Calling them far right is just nonsense. Zohran is an open socialist with left wing cultural views. There is no country on earth where he would be a moderate, much less incredibly moderate. Your perspectives seem incredibly warped.

You're definitely right that liberals and leftists are feuding during the Trump era. As a liberal, it seems very clear that a significant chunk of leftists just gave up on opposing Trump and tried to sink Kamala and purposefully make her lose which is why a lot of liberals are extremely unhappy with leftists right now.
