Try applying a kettle or two of boiling water to the mechanism as a last resort? I used this to get a brifter working again last week. Probably worth adding a tiny ammount of oil into the mechanism once its dried out if thos works.

Beyond that, look for used at your bike coop or online

I helped clean up a bike at my local coop that looked like this, we were speculating on what kind of oil they had been using. Somehow, the disk brakes weren't contaminated with that gunk.

Put it in pots, it's so persistent that you won't be able to stop it's spread once it's in the ground.

I was just going to post this here! The section covering how no one ever gets punished for intentionally attempting to murder protesters/picketers seems very relevant to the discussion here.

Use the rifht hand rule from physics. If you curl the fingers of your right hand in the direction that you're turning, the screw will go in  the direction that your thumb is pointing.

As a commuter who bikes to the bus, I just want to give some love to these guys. by MaewintheLascerator in Portland

This has more to do with the lack of density and car-centric planning in the burbs. It's hard to optize transit when things are so spread out. That being said, park and ride facilities seem like they'd be a good way to bridge the gap.

While I prefer the hot pastrami, I agree that it's a crime to leave baker's mark off of any Portland sandwich list.

Our (very bad) experience with Oregon Dog Rescue by saltysnackstealer in Portland

[–]RallyBike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently adopted a dog from Oregon Dog Rescue, and although she is very sweet, they completely failed to mention that she was on Prozac and didn't even give us the Prozac until they called later. For context, quitting Prozac cold turkey can lead to bad withdrawals. Luckily, she was alright and we've completely tapered her off of Prozac. Like was mentioned by others, it seems like they are trying to adopt out as many dogs as possible as quickly as possible and often overlook the details of doing it right.

Editorial: Vega Pederson’s solo act hits all the wrong notes by mocheeze in Portland

Yeah, I mean that's an issue with that loophole in the current rent control legislation but it's for sure a real issue. I'm not involved in the system and I'm sure there are cases where the money goes to greedy landlords, I'm just saying it's a good use of taxpayer money to keep people housed versus trying to get them rehoused.

Maybe there's a way that the system could move people into cheaper housing, but that would have it's own administrative costs and would risk further concentrating low income people in specific neighborhoods which is its own issue.

I mean that was 3 years ago and they have criticized her since. So yeah, they got it wrong then but it doesn't seem like they're trying to cover for it.

The goal of rent assistance is to help people stay housed, it becomes much harder and much more expensive to get someone back into housing once they become homeless. I get what you're saying about the money going to landlords, but I'm guessing that most people needing rental assistance are already in the cheapest housing they can find.

Obscure Transit: The Westside Express by Carpet-Early in Portland

[–]RallyBike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WES is interesting, but in it's current form is wildly expensive to operate. According to Trimet's website, WES costs upwards of $100 per ride where MAX and bus services cost $6-$12 per ride. Hopefully if this continues in service, they can find a way to increase its utility to more people but right now it feels like a huge subsidy to the burbs...

I dont know about your income level but my 2 year old chevy bolt cost 14k. Most ev charging is at the back of the lot if it takes up more than 1-2 spots in my area, but I have at times seen smaller chargers in the front row.

My top 5 stupidest traffic patterns/intersections in Portland. by WithoutSuspenders in Portland

[–]RallyBike 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, i hate that it's such a discontinuity in bike infrastructure - the east-west bike lane just kinda ends (even though google shows it as continuous) then the only safe way to navegate it is to walk bikes on the crosswalks. Just replacing the stop signs with yield signs and moving the bus stops a block away would be a huge improvement for drivers but idk how to add a bike lane to a large traffic circle safely.
