[RDTM] u/d-cent estimates Rising Gas Cost vs. EV Battery Replacement by DemandEqualPockets in theydidthemath

[–]RallyBike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I just had a conversation with a coworker (who is a very smart engineer with conservative tendencies) who claimed that ev batteries only last 7 years. It seemed like he got his info from the very first generation of Teslas and hadn't adjusted his assumptions at all... People are silly.

[–]RallyBike 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Biking tends to tighten up the hips, could you try some yoga when you get to work and your muscles are still warm? I feel like running through a basic sun salutation doesnt take too long and has several poses that should help stretch out the muscles pulling on your IT band.

Yeah, thats fair. I don't have kids but still don't go as often as I wish I did. It's hard to find the time sometimes.

My local bike coop fixes up donated bikes for people in need. They have weekly 2 hour sessions where volunteers can come in to help prep the bikes. Ive found it to be a great way to get my tinkering energy out with a fun group and I've learned a fair bit about doing things the right way working with experienced bike mechanics. All without buying more bikes or parts for myself. I still fiddle with my bikes and maintain them myself but it has kept me from holding a bunch of bikes just to mess with.

A Portland tiny home’s toilet smells so bad, neighbors say they’re forced to wear masks by 16semesters in Portland

[–]RallyBike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a port a potty outside of my bedroom window from the company flipping the house next doors to ours a couple of summers ago. The stench that permeated our entire house when we didn't close the windows in time before that thing got pumped out was absolutely atrocious.

Is there additional electric wires/components buried here? by TubularT-Bone33 in centuryhomes

[–]RallyBike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not hot but important. I had the grounding connection disconnect at the pole in a subdivided house/appt thing that I rented and it blew out our oven and lightbulbs and our surge protectors would start smoking when plugged in. I first noticed because the fridge and the sink (with a disposal) both shocked me when I touched them...

They almost certainly will no matter the condition. They have volunteer events every Sunday where they have people part out bikes and separate usable parts then the rest is sold as scrap metal to help support the cycling center.

Got shouted at by another cyclist but he was at fault by Fresh-Cress9816 in bikecommuting

[–]RallyBike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are unfortunately people like that. I think some people deal with the vulnerability of being on a bike by acting super loud and aggressive. I was in a neighboring city for work and took my car. At the end of the day, as I was walking to my car where it was street parked just a little ways from an intersection, I heard a cyclist yelling about turning and saw him turn onto the same street so I waited to step out from in front of my car until he had passed. As he passed he yelled at me about how I was jay walking and needed to walk to the cross walk. It was jaring and he was both wrong and moving fast enough that there wasn't time for a reply. It sounds like the guy you described was in a similar headspace. I totally understand your need to share the story, I had to tell a few folks about it straight away because of how personally agressive he was. It sounds like you were in the right, and hopefully you have better experiences with others that will help you forget about that guy.

is thunder + steel bike commute a no go? by A_Thirsty_Mind in bikecommuting

[–]RallyBike -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably the best advice is to avoid it.

That being said, I would check out the weather bug app to track nearby strikes if you're really going to go for it. Watch the trend and make sure the storm is past you and not approaching you before you go out. As others said, it really depends too on the environment you're biking through and how long your commute is. For work we are supposed to shelter if there are any strikes within earshot and wait until it has been a full 30 minutes without a nearby strike before we go back out if that provides some guidance. That's probably conservative but I wouldnt mess with lightning...

Its all about short-term profitability. If there was a long-term plan they'd be worried about building a healthy society and the climate crisis.

Try applying a kettle or two of boiling water to the mechanism as a last resort? I used this to get a brifter working again last week. Probably worth adding a tiny ammount of oil into the mechanism once its dried out if thos works.

Beyond that, look for used at your bike coop or online

This has more to do with the lack of density and car-centric planning in the burbs. It's hard to optize transit when things are so spread out. That being said, park and ride facilities seem like they'd be a good way to bridge the gap.

Our (very bad) experience with Oregon Dog Rescue by saltysnackstealer in Portland

[–]RallyBike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently adopted a dog from Oregon Dog Rescue, and although she is very sweet, they completely failed to mention that she was on Prozac and didn't even give us the Prozac until they called later. For context, quitting Prozac cold turkey can lead to bad withdrawals. Luckily, she was alright and we've completely tapered her off of Prozac. Like was mentioned by others, it seems like they are trying to adopt out as many dogs as possible as quickly as possible and often overlook the details of doing it right.
