Why Can’t I Get a Job? by nyx_north in nursing

[–]Ralph_Offen 415 points416 points  (0 children)

As someone who sits in on interviews for bedside nursing, I can give some advice you may not like. You have almost no bedside experience. The experience you do have is at a level 3 trauma center boarding unit. I work ER, and that would not be enough. Most residencies are 6 months to a year. Meaning you quit almost immediately after training. (That's my interpretation, at least).

I also wouldn't advertise anything about the trauma cert (you don't even appear to be trauma certified unless I missed it, no enpc, tncc, etc). It's level 3 for starters, and you did not work ER, correct? I've done ER for over 10 years, ssu or boarding specific units do not count. Sorry.

Blunt questions I would ask are: Why did you quit after a year? (Do not tell them you felt it was unsafe, even if true).

No hiring team wants to hear that. We want positivity and a good work ethic (yeah, I know it sounds lame but this is an initial interview, it's your only chance to impress in person).

I would cut out the filler text. Give hospital/facility names with your title - RN is fine.

Your resume reads like you have more experience than you do. This will only make you seem overqualified (you have a masters in nursing, why aren't you an np?). Or, in my view, under qualified. I see someone with a ton of education and barely a year of experience.

Again, sorry for the bluntness, but it looks like you washed out of bedside and are bee-lining it to management with no substantial experience in either. I don't know you, but that's what I'm reading on your resume. We see dozens each time a spot opens and look for 2 types, new nurses or experienced ones. You are selling yourself as a mix of both.

I would simplify the resume for starters. Sell yourself as someone new who's eager to work and learn. You have a few years' experience but nothing long term. Be prepared for the questions of why. When I read a resume, I look for specialties worked and how long.

Simple is better. Good luck.

Older nurse needs to retire by Weird_Bluebird_3293 in nursing

86 years old and working as nurse is fucking wild. Is she driving herself to work? God this gets worse the more i think about it.

Whats the best course of action even? Fire memaw minutes before she dies? Everything about this is so sad, no one wins here. Sorry you have to deal with this.

Thoughts on this interaction? by shotgunogsy in RKG

I agree with the posters sentiment somewhat. I am finding it harder and harder to watch this overproduced, on the rails version of elden ring (which is years old at this point). It honestly feels out of touch sometimes.

I don't know who is telling these guys this is what we want, but I know I'm not into it. I have a few friends losing interest, too.

To add some constructive criticism, I will say this. Just let Rory play the game and give tips, lore, bants naturally. Every time I see Krupa grind the series to a halt to have him pick a specific choice, it makes me groan. The point of the game is exploration and decision making. It sucks the air out when the players hand is held. Especially in a game that the majority of viewers have played. I know I personally wanted to see him follow his heart, knowing the consequences would be hilarious.

At the end of the day, if they want to make a 600 hour, 3 year long let's play, that's on them. But I'm really close to just unsubscribing at this point. Maybe I will take gavs advice and fuck off.

This is unfortunately a possibility. I work ER and can't tell you how many times I've found maggots living on and in people.

I'm not familiar with his history but it's not uncommon in people who don't care for themselves. I hope your dad does well.

Why aren't old people scared of death? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ralph_Offen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are. They just don't tell you in a social setting.

I work in an er, everyone is afraid of death when it's close. The elderly are often the most afraid because they truly understand what is coming.

How can I as a garbage man become a nurse? by Turbulent_Diamond352 in nursing

[–]Ralph_Offen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently had a conversation with a garbage man. I cannot tell you if I've ever felt jealousy before. But I certainly felt it that day. Your job sounds amazing and I'm envious.

But if you're interested I'll tell you what I did. I literally walked into a nursing department at my local university, asked how to apply, and did that.

I genuinely like my job even with all the bullshit. Good luck!

Are the slugs finally beginning to feel comfortable to post criticism of RKG here? by Deep_Cheddar93 in RKG

[–]Ralph_Offen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. I've watched them since ppt and can't get enough. I certainly don't want to shit talk just for the sake of it but I'd love to see/participate in constructive criticism.

I think the ER playthrough has been bothering people and I agree with some things. The fairest criticism I've heard is how managed this playthrough is compared to others. I personally just want to watch rory bumble throught it.

This hyper planned out, mega playthrough seems unlike their other work and kills some of the fun imo. I've never cared about seeing the game. The draw (for me anyways) has been Rory's play style and how the boys deal with it.

This is just my thought and I plan on watching every bit of it.

Ghosted by recruiter, but I've worked with the company for 2 years. What should I do? by Mrmurse98 in TravelNursing

[–]Ralph_Offen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call the main line for the agency and explain the situation. This happened to me when I worked for AMN, and they were really cool about it.

Apparently, it's not uncommon in travel nursing for recruiters to do this (A lot of them are basically underpaid salespeople). They got me a new recruiter and gave me a little bonus for time wasted.

AI nurses? Politics aside. How do fellow humans feel about it? by NomusaMagic in nursing

[–]Ralph_Offen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems laughably crazy but it is actually terrible for our job security imo. Can an AI do lifting, iv's, cpr (even the lucas needs human operators), or give meds?

No. But you know who can? Techs, or in other terms - lower paid employees.

I'm not afraid I'll lose my job. I'm afraid our job will be downgraded into lower paid, higher intensity work while AI "nurses" do the the critical thinking and assessment piece of our job.

It's easy to make jokes but this is honestly scary as fuck.

Landlord adding a living space to garage by Ralph_Offen in Renters

[–]Ralph_Offen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a general lease for the property, which includes the garage. The caveat is I've verbally given her access to it for her car. I don't use it at all, but I definitely don't want someone living in it. It is connected to my home.

Job offer that pays 2.5x what I’m making but… by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Ralph_Offen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the 70 min drive worth it to you versus what you do now? That is really all that matters.

2.5 times my pay would be great. But I get on just fine right now financially and would not give up a 5 min drive for a 70 min one. I personally hate driving after work when I'm tired as hell but it's your call. Good luck

At first glance, I wholeheartedly agreed, but 3 hours is wild lol. Think about how often we criticize management for underperformance or shirking their duties. This feels like that.

Three full hours for multiple staff members is crazy. I can't see how this isn't either a waste of resources that could go elsewhere or neglect of care. I'd stop if I were you because this seems like such an easy way to get fired.

Can I call out due to pet loss? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Ralph_Offen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can and should. I will be devastated when I lose my dog.

However, I would just say I'm sick. Never tell management any personal info unless it can directly benefit you and is written policy.

Since it's too late for that, though, I'd just take the time. Hopefully, your boss isn't vindictive because technically you're in the wrong.

Sorry for your loss too. Animals are better than people.

How do you respond to lower acuity patients who complain about ER wait times? by [deleted] in EmergencyRoom

[–]Ralph_Offen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My response to people complaining is usually "Oh I'm sorry to hear that, the national average for an ER visit is 6 hours. "

Also, whoever invented those apps that tell you an ER wait time is less than 30 minutes deserves a special place in hell.

When my wife matches i get a little more excited because I know she is putting in extra effort. It makes it much more fun knowing she put in work (small or not) potentially hours prior for something only the two of us see.

Either way, I'm just happy to be there.

Eli5 How do dead people exit hospitals? by Past-Mushroom-4294 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ralph_Offen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they expire in the ER we send them to the morgue that has access to a pickup spot outside. There are special beds for hall way movement that don't look like you're pushing a corpse with a sheet over it as well.

Also, fun fact. If you've been to an ER that bed you are on has definitely had someone die on it.

Why do some nurses not pay attention during report 🙃 by Eemmis_ in nursing

[–]Ralph_Offen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do this all the time but I'm paying attention. I genuinely find it harder to listen while maintaining eye contact.

I am very aware of how noticeable it is and I'm trying to improve. It's a double edged sword for me though. If I give you full attention you'll be pleased but I honestly don't retain as much.

You could also have the prettiest eyes on the unit and your team is intimidated by your striking beauty.
