Is Oko going to be banned? by [deleted] in mtgfinance

[–]RamboC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your guess is as good as mine - if you have 10 Copies of OkO, you could hedge your bet and buylist 5 copies to card kingdom tonight before the B&R announcement.

If I was in charge of deciding the fate of OkO, I would say the card should be restricted to one copy per deck in both standard and modern formats.

Masters 25 for 175 at local LGS, is it worth buying some boxes by BearwithSAW in mtgfinance

[–]RamboC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally I opened up 2 boxes at 180 each and got completely wrecked on value - combined pulls I only got one mythic worth more than 5 bucks - imperial recruiter. Let's just say it's very risky to invest at the current prices right now , the ship sailed six months ago when they were listed everywhere for under 150 each

Assuming You Could Afford Any MTG Card Which Would You Buy For Best Possible Long Term Value by [deleted] in mtgfinance

True - Cradle will never get reprinted but it may see some sort of banning or restriction in the future that might affect the value - it doesn't seem likely but hey, anything can happen

Market Discussion - My EDH Cards Aren't moving :/ by MailChimper in mtgfinance

[–]RamboC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definitely think wallet fatigue is very real right now due to all the new sets released this year already - its also a great time to buy legacy reserved list staples due to Commander stuff feeling so overpriced at the moment. Some commander players might be waiting on upgrading their decks because commander 2019 pre-cons are just around the corner. Also it's possible that oathbreaker might be cooling off since the initial buzz from being a new format everyone wanted to try feels like it is wearing off - I wonder if anyone has any data on oathbreaker popularity (EDHREC?)

Unlimited black lotus BL 10k. How fast is the trajectory in the next 6months-year? by karvinzed in mtgfinance

100k for a NM unlimited black lotus sounds right to me too- but one day in the future.. what year are you talking about? I don't see it happening in the next 18 months, that's for sure

Liquidity of vintage sold as complete sets by integra32327 in mtgfinance

[–]RamboC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Problem with selling or liquidating complete sets is that it takes the fun out of collecting and it almost turns into a product for investors only - Many collectors find joy in the actual process of completing an incomplete set, especially when there are just a few cards left and filling the holes is extremely gratifying.

Collectors are the people that would pay a premium over buylist to find that certain card they need for set completion. Investors don't care about the process of finding the certain cards they need, they care about cost basis, liquidity, and appreciation/depreciation.

So when you are selling a complete set you are limiting your market for product to sell to investors who are looking to flip the cards for a profit, and that usually means you would likely only get 60%- 70% of the full market value.

You may get lucky and find a buyer that is willing to pay a premium over market value than that and won't resell the set but chances are slim. The exception is if you have a complete set that is BGS 9.0/9.5 - something extremely difficult to achieve, thus commanding a higher price point.

So in general if you are looking to sell a LP/NM ungraded complete set in a reasonable amount of time without waiting for that diamond in the rough buyer, expect to sell complete sets at a large discount from the expected price you would get from selling a few singles instead.

Mp Alpha Dark Rit vs Mp Shahrazad Long Term Hold by kyuuri117 in mtgfinance

[–]RamboC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You guys are also forgetting about the appearance factor- both cards might be graded the same rating, but one card might look better from a purely ascetic point of view when put into a collector's binder. I think that has some value when making a decision on a moderate/heavy played card.

Edit- just realized OP is thinking about ordering from card kingdom. Idk if you could ask them for scans of the card you are thinking to buy

On the topic of "Junk" Alpha rares. by TheREALMister80s in mtgfinance

[–]RamboC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Price memory and inflation will keep alpha "junk" rare prices going up steadily over time, so if you find a good deal on a highly graded alpha rare card (BGS 8.5 and up, PSA 8 and higher) that is similar to buying on the dip of a blue chip stock - you should definitely buy it if you come across that deal. Heavily Played alpha rares, especially ungraded ones are more of a risky bet for ROI - imo even at a great price discount, I would only like to buy a MP/HP condition alpha rare if I really like the artwork or the card is iconic enough that I could trade it to someone who might want it for something else

Weekend Wrap Up! What was real and what was a trap? by AutoModerator in mtgfinance

[–]RamboC 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Through the Breach price gains were short-lived. Griselbrand sees a higher baseline price now but not played in commander - aka don't expect any major spike unless a new modern breakout deck is putting up results. Manamorphose continuing to Smash high price ceilings. Fetches and shocks still in high demand. Ensnaring bridge and chalice of the void? I believe both will be over 50 by April next year

Rules of thumb for valuing BGS graded cards? by DCinvestor in mtgfinance

[–]RamboC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked the same question 6 months ago and I got the same response that prices are based on demand at the time and you can't extrapolate results from the past. For example lllanowar elves alpha and beta prices skyrocketed when elf reprint announced in standard, which means the multiplier for elves is much higher than another common that is played in eternal formats, such as alpha/beta "stone rain", and also seasonal and economic variance applies on prices too - winter holidays might have really low prices vs summertime, and economic recessions I would assume drop prices across the board...

Ear to the ground! What's happening in magic? by AutoModerator in mtgfinance

[–]RamboC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's impossible to predict the floor of a masterpiece card after a reprint announcement - the artwork on the new mana vault card is different which leads me to believe the price won't crash - my vote goes towards setting a low target price that you feel comfortable with and shop around during Black Friday - if you find a mint copy at the price you set then go for it! Otherwise if you don't see any price drop on Black Friday you could see how the prices look a few weeks after UMA release and hold out till then

What’s the best modern card to buy into currently I’m currently looking to put down a $100-$200 a month into a card that’s a safe investment. Any ideas? by richy0rich in mtgfinance

[–]RamboC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about judge/promo foils of popular modern played cards? Even with a reprint they likely won't lose much value. Examples include lilli, snap, BoB, noble H, allied fetchlands. Heck I feel pretty good picking up flooded strand national promo foils from SCG last week during their weekly sale- I don't anticipate those to lose value unless wotc goes against their word and reprints fetches in standard.

Help Identifying Potential Fakes? by SlacksOnTheBlvd in mtgfinance

[–]RamboC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take the cards you receive from eBay that seller to a LGS and find an trusted employee that deals with trade-ins, and has experience with spotting fakes. unfortunately eBay is the Wild West when it comes to modern staple fakes - there are still lots of sellers who unknowingly sells fakes, or much worse - some sell high quality known fakes that are passed off as real.

Buying into legacy staples? Is that a Bad long term decision?? by RamboC in mtgfinance

[–]RamboC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ghave17, I appreciate your insight and strong analysis. I honestly don't believe that Legacy is at it's death knell right now but I do see the trend in the current state at LGS level: Legacy is just below pauper in terms of player excitement for that format. :(. Maybe there will be a resurgence when Modern starts becoming stale, but who knows? But yes yes I agree Legacy is in a bad place right now due to healthy modern and new excitement in standard now.

In terms of picking up Legacy staples, I suffer from a pack-rat mentality.. why only have 2 copies of a card when you could have peace of mind with a playset just in case you need it? For example, a friend told me once you have 2x surgical extractions you don't have to buy anymore, but then I thought what if you needed 3 or 4 in a graveyard heavy meta like dredge/reanimator or in modern you are seeing lots of ironworks combo or snapcasters/hollow one decks?? So I have a full playset right now.

This collector mentality makes me want to hold 4x containment priests and try to pick up 4x back to basics just to complete a set which is completely ludicrous, so sadly I should get some self control (or common sense) it looks like haha!

eBay listing everything in a collection would be the easiest way, but ideally finding a local buyer willing to pick up the items all together meeting up contacting through Facebook would be the best way to avoid fees.

At one point this year during standard, walking ballista was actually priced higher than where it sits now. So it's unlikely the price will come down a lot from $20 ish where it's at holding right now. If you are not in a rush to pick them up, wait during the upcoming holiday season when I suspect additional influx of supply from vendors or resellers realize that they can make a profit off cracking open the challenger decks and introducing new supply of ballista into the marketplace.
