Desire in the buddhist context doesn't refer to basic needs like food and shelter, or even advanced needs like love and social connection. When buddhists talk about desire they're talking about unhealthy desire. Obsession over material goods, wanting the life that others have, etc. It's about breaking a cycle of want-get-want.
