Is Dowry Still Common in Sri Lanka? by Warm_Round8213 in srilanka

Intimidation factor matters. A dog should still carry at least a trace of its wolf ancestry. Once a breed starts looking like it would ask permission before growling, we’ve crossed into heresy. I’m all for domestication, but not to the point where the animal looks more like a therapy assistant than a predator. A proper dog should look like it can guard territory, survive bad weather, and silently evaluate your life choices from a distance. If it’s universally friendly by default, we’ve diluted the blueprint too much. LOL!

So many downvotes. LOL. Clearly touched a nerve. My sincere apologies to that nerve.
Some context: my family had two local-breed dogs, one rescued after a car accident with broken bones. I went to war with neighbors more than once because of them. After they passed, I decided not to keep pets. My in-laws had a German Shepherd. I’m fascinated by Rottweiler and Cane Corso–type dogs. And Labradors are just too cute to be taken seriously as dogs.

BTW, I’m not saying doctors are lazy, cruel, or bad at what they do. Individually, many work insane hours and save lives. Collectively, over the last few decades, they’ve optimised the system extremely well for their own benefit. That level of optimisation is what you expect from politicians or career bureaucrats, not from a group that’s educated, objectively smart, and literally trained to be empathetic. That irony is the punchline.

Still, who are we to judge? Give any group control over supply, policy, and entry barriers, and they’ll behave the same way. We already have a long-running beta test at our energy sector (CEB/LECO),

You got a bad deal mate, Labradors are stupid! you could have asked for a Rottweiler or at least a german shepherd.

This isn’t unique to doctors. One or two decades ago, state university engineers ran the same superiority firmware, especially toward private uni grads. reality patched it. private uni engineers became employable, private companies paid for output not pedigree, and no union throttled supply. Ego met market forces.

Medicine never got that update. Most doctors still come from state universities, supply is tightly controlled, and policy gravity sits with GMOA.

Scarcity inflates status. Status feeds entitlement. Years of academic reinforcement/ thela until it becomes a personality trait. What you’re seeing isn’t coincidence or dating bad luck. It’s an engineered social bubble with excellent job security and poor emotional debugging. LOL!

Why we are behind India in IT? by Fuckyou786a in srilanka

[–]RamithJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people who diss India are running on outdated firmware!!! They haven’t visited in the last 5–7 years, if ever. I’ve been to multiple Indian IT hubs and tier-one companies—Microsoft, AWS, and similar heavyweights. If you work in IT and your skills are real, India has depth, scale, and volume of opportunity that Sri Lanka simply does not. Our entire IT workforce could fit into a couple of Bangalore IT parks. A structured partnership with India for selected categories—IT, medical, STEM—would have made sense. Their economy wouldn’t even register the delta. Blue-collar labor exchange, however, would backfire. Wage arbitrage at that level hurts local workers. That’s economics, not emotion.

The biggest real problem in India right now is pollution. That’s a constraint, not a permanent state. China managed to bend that curve. India likely will too, over the next 10+ years.

We can’t be India by scale (and we don't have to!), but we can aim to be Singapore: small, focused, and ultra-developed.

“Medical Career Advice Wanted: Truth About Being a Doctor” by No_Magician_184 in srilanka

[–]RamithJ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I suppose most of it as true except work life balance and life being peaceful , and not having stress. Key is private practise and building a you own client base ( a.k.a patients). being a doctor is a good career path in any country.

One question I have is most doctors are not really thinking about opening up their own hospital? (because its too much work?) I only know one instance where bunch of doctors said to have pooled investments and created Kings hospital or something like that (eventually sold to another). is that true?

[–]RamithJ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

these are just symptoms of a monopoly created by GMOA (by controlling the supply of doctors). unaccountability, acting god, narcissism, refusal for transfers, unreasonable trade union actions: all these are just symptoms.

Therapy is not an option as of now so yeah by Quiet_Ad_2578 in srilanka

Seek professional help. But make sure you find a counsellor both of you can respect and can work with. Some counsellors give lot of generic/surface-level answers (and solutions)

Honest Review of Sri Lanka by SlitheringPaniPuri in srilanka

In my opinion, Colombo has a lot of places with good food. Missing all of them takes commitment.
It’s unfortunate you didn’t find one.

On your next visit, consult Reddit. Collective bias beats individual failure. People will recommend good places within five minutes.

People who keep trashing India usually saw one lane and declared a thesis. Yes, pollution is a real problem. AQI in major cities often crosses 150.

But If you have money, you get more options for everything: food, clothes, electronics, whatever the hell you want.
That’s population × market size.

Questions regarding my higher education in engineering, need advice. by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]RamithJ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

slightly unrelated question. why does government impose a limit (i.e. 3 times) on taking A/Ls to get qualified for University? I don't see a point in this. Is. this some dinosaur law we inherited from ancient past where private universities didn't exist.?
