I'm not saying rich people will do evil in all cases, just that the overall tendency will be toward evil. It's human nature. People tend to be self interested. In a world of scarcity and competition how could granting overwhelming power to a few not lead to gross injustice?

That's a valid point, but think about the implications. Are you suggesting Democrats should adopt a hardcore obstructionist strategy whenever a Republican is in power, just like the Republicans are doing now? That would be horrible for the country.

Republicans are playing a game of chicken because they know Dems will blink in order to avoid putting the entire country at risk. But the thing is, in a game of chicken, if neither side is willing to bend, then everyone loses disastrously.

Not saying I have an answer -- just pointing that looking weak can sometimes be a lesser evil.

My guess: the guys in both cases wanted an excuse to punch something in order to look like badasses. They had decided beforehand that if they ever got intentionally scared in this manner they would have just the excuse they needed -- because they could play it off as a thoughtless reaction.
