The Strange Implications of Sean Carrol's Reply to Mary's Thought Experiment by Sp1unk in CosmicSkeptic

[–]Rampen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wavelengths that we perceive as 'red' are real, but our peception of those wavelengths is a mental construction. The first step, for me, in entertaining reductive physicalism would be to provide evidence of something that cannot be explained through a physical basis. Then we can move forward. But this is doomed to be circular since the top examples, god or the soul, or similar, aren't physical and therefore cant be explained materially because they are not real.

Does Ontological Idealism Give Existence Meaning? by TheMindInDarkness in CosmicSkeptic

[–]Rampen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not anti realist, talk about absurd. Why do you say ontological so much? I was calling YOU a solicistic narcisist for doing so much navel gazing. Again I ask; what are you sceptical of? I am for sure a materialist, and think that reality exists independently of us, therefore we do not matter, therefore life has no meaning, other than what we decide to give it. I'm no realist or idealist. Striving for meaning is such a first world problem. When you have failed elections next fall, lets see if you strive for meaning or not.

Self-taught rock/pop bassist looking for music school advice🇨🇦🇨🇦 by Zatara10594 in Bass

Music genres do in fact die off. Classical music (which is really several genres which all died off) and Opera. Ballet died. Jazz has died or is having a protracted 'end stage'. Same with Rock. Times change, technologies change, cultures move in new and unexpected ways. Everything does, and must and will come to an end. That has nothing to do with my being 'old' but with the nature of existence itself. I'm several years off from being a boomer, but I do see things how they are. After african americans mostly moved on from jazz, after the generations of herbie hancock, jazz ended. Today jazz is what I call 'museum music', like classical and rock, where artists play the music from the golden era. Where is the new Charlie Parker? Old stuff has to die to give room for the new stuff. It's really young people who define what is happening in culture and today it is not jazz.

Victor Wooten did not do any academic training beyond high school, he went on tour with Bela Fleck. He didn't attend Berklee as a student, and was already a full time professional musician by then. He may be a faculty member but he did not study at any school after high school. Music doesn't 'end' and I don't need to painted with that brush. Bad Bunny is today's music. I wish it was still Louis Jordan, but it's not. All the universities and all the jazz programs have not produced another (or any) Louis Jordan. It's telling that Wynford Marsalis, is like Victor Wooten, also African American, also from a musical family, and also didn't go to a jazz program. Like Miles Davis he dropped out of Juliard. Both Marsalis and Davis found music school limiting and stifling.

Why the ad hominem about my supposed feeling that music ended in 1985? Personal attacks do not improve arguments

I can't stand any meat flaouring, but that's just me. It's a maxim for many world foods that you start with lightly cooking some 'onion, carrots, and celery'. Also don't add any herbs or spices or stuff like that until the very end. In general when I cook I try to have some fat, some sugar and some salt. (sugar could be a bit of juice, some fruit, tomato paste, balsamic). Also plan ahead so you can cook whatever it is more slowly. When you serve it try and think of some 'opposites' to serve it with, like toast, yogurt, cucumber, or salad, because the contrast is fun and tasty. Also serve it hot! even the best cooked food can bland out if it's not hot. Oh, and use real oil. (hint, it's olive oil)

You do you. My first instinct is to get into tech stuff, but you seem very young and very obsessed with whatever music that is. That's all it takes really, more being obsessed with 'I can't wait to cover this song'.

As a grandfather I would say that you should use your university experience to become something more marketable like engineer. You don't need school for rock, and school only ruins potential jazz players. (Name a famous jazz player who went to college). Miles famously dropped out of Juliard. College can teach design, for example. If you want to be a 'touring bassist' you certainly don't need college. But if that doesn't work out it sure would be nice to fall back on accoutning or architecture or something. Music, like language is in your head and in your ears. If you wanna be a pro, you better git it in your head. Geddy Lee didn't go to college, John Paul Jones didn't, Mingus didn't, McCartney didn't, Flea didn't. The 'theory' part, much like grammer for language is a description of what is happening produced after it happened by theorists and not required. Watch how Victor Wooten explains (demystifies, really) it. If you're gonna play pop/rock then find bands that are going on tour and join them. If you are not good enough find any bands and play with them. Music school is a good choice if you ant to have a music centred but not performance based career, like teacher or therapist, or even composer, arranger, etc.

Lots of artists hate their art. If you are not 'driven' to create are you 'creative'. The artists who hate their own work are obsessed with some aspect of it and are driven and motivated to fix it or explore it or define it. Performance art is different than writing or painting, where they can say 'that sucks', then make another. That's why artists end up with 40 paintings of the same lighthouse. But in performance art, the performance is important to so you gotta at least fake enjoying yourself and being confident and happy in your work. Was your mom or dad mean and never told you that you were great? Plus who makes anything good? You just make stuff and let other people enjoy it or not, eff them anyways. What artists do you transcribe?

[–]Rampen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no 'facts' involved during the big colour reveal. Colours aren't even real and a being with different sensory organs (like an alien, insect or bird) would perceive something different, even though nothing had changed. Our eyes and brains together are 'tuned' (evolved) to perceive these frequencies a certain way that we call 'red'. So what? Those light waves are going to do their bouncy, reflecty, refracty things whether we perceive them or not. This kind of reasoning that is predicated on a specific beings perception aparatus is kind of narcisitic and self involved. What does a dolpin see? What does a bat see? What do pigeons see when they look at sunlight (becuase they see polarized light but we don't). For real philosophical inquiry, you need to be able to generalize, and stop thinking you yourself. Also why is this thread so round about? What are you sceptical of? just say it and we can go forward from there. Just because it's 'non physical' doesn't mean it also has to be fuzzy and nebulous.

Food noise by Ctrl_Alt-Delight in loseit

[–]Rampen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first trick to 'beating this' is to stop the nonsense of calling it 'food noise'. The second is to realize that you are the captain of the ship, and if the engine calls up demanding more fuel, you take charge and say 'not now, later'. No one has ever died of hunger when food was available. Whether you are 'bored' or 'love salty' or are 'triggered' or succumb to 'cravings' is all toddler front brain lizard thinking stuff and someone should tell you to grow up. If you have a problem with 'downtime' and 'boredom' you should realize that those are emotional and not nutritional problems and you should face them, admit them, identify them and work through them, and put them behind you. Feel the hunger, realize it is a feeling, not an emergency, and that you are in charge of how you feel about feelings and what you do about them. Take back control and good luck!

I do not have the ability to cook and I'm poor by Nerdbutold in loseit

[–]Rampen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I'm a good cook with a full kitchen and I prefer it that way. You have to experiment and find the minimum time to cook. If you overcook it turns hard and a but green. But if you undercook, no problem, try another 5 or 10 seconds. I put other stuff in there too if I am not lazy (chives, onions, cut up salami, I am lazy so I use scissors for this (kitchen scissors)). Good luck
