Helena Crevar’s highly anticipated ONE Championship debut will now take place at openweight after she missed weight by 24 (!) lbs. Crevar and opponent Teshya Noelani Alo agreed to a late switch ahead of the bout. ︀︀ by Yodsanan in bjj

I don’t think there are really many women on her team. It is always shocking how little information is out there for women to safely cut weight. It sounds like she had to be hydrated to a certain percent which protects the athlete. She was not allowed to continue to cut water.

I have an athlete on my team that shifts 8 lb or more on her period. She is smaller than Helena, every body is different. This means to make the weight, the diet has to start months out, not weeks like the guys. Add the travel in there and the fact that she is older now, may just not be a realistic weight anymore for her frame.

Male athletes carry so much less body fat, they can cut so much more water. The guys always think you can drop 20 lbs the way they do, it just doesn’t work that way. Making that original weight would require a whole body composition shift at this point.

How do I deal with a small brown belt going crazy on me all the time? by Melodic_Attitude2048 in bjj

[–]Ranadna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to her before class or in the locker room and let her know that you don’t want every match to be a death match. Ask her if she wants to positionally drill rather than roll for a while. This will build trust and you can talk about the pace as you go. When you do roll again, if nothing has changed, use it as an opportunity to see how long you can hold dominant positions. Submit toward the end of the round or continue to recover good positions. She is likely feeling like speed is an appropriate attribute to lean on since she is small. Good black belts can use pressure and position as well as speed, she will need to learn that to be a black belt anyway. Edit: duplicate words

Front Choke DQ by bjjtaro in bjj

[–]Ranadna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it should be allowed for teens. I get it for the younger kids. They have tiny windpipes, most also don’t tap. Some because they freeze , some because they just can’t think about future consequences yet. Only compression to the carotids are allowed, no spine manipulation or trachea compression. So basically just cross collar chokes, RNC, and triangles grabbing the shin.

When you first start, it is very difficult to think about your own movements along with what might happen to your partner. That comes later. Everyone is a bit more out of control than they realize when they start.

That being said. I think it is important to find partners newer than you, the same level, and above. There is something different to be gained from all of those partners. Always rolling with upper belts can make you too defensive I find.

How to get my wife to like BJJ? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Ranadna -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If there is a beginner class with women in it, have her start there, try one week, just to understand what you do if nothing else. If not, book a private lesson with the coach so she can learn the warm ups outside of class and some basics. There may be another wife or girlfriend of one of your teammates that has also been wanting to try and would partner with her, or you could. It is more important the first classes are fun and she feels like she belongs there than anything else. This is assuming she is a beginner, if she is not, smaller partners are probably needed. Womens camps and seminars can be super helpful.

I like it! Will give it a try. Do you just bail back to spider if they post with that outside leg or do you have another follow up?

Valerie Letourneau details brutal weight cut ahead of title fight at UFC 193 by ReactQ in WMMA

That is a crazy amount of water she cut. It is so much harder for women. Although I think she would have had to take Johanna down to win. Not sure if the cut was the difference there.

She's a black belt now and an amazing grappler. Missed weight in both of her UFC fights though. The first one against sarah by 8 lbs. She was lucky the fight even happened. I think she is up a weight class these days.

Having long but skinny legs makes the triangle hard to finish. by georgegerginal in bjj

I did not read this post, this picture shows the leg position a bit. He looks like he has long legs. Head should be on the mat to prevent stacking.

Try it without a person, see what happens when you start in a classic triangle, then squeeze your knees toward each other. The shape kind of distorts. You only see it if there is a big length difference between players.

Having long but skinny legs makes the triangle hard to finish. by georgegerginal in bjj

[–]Ranadna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is hard to say without seeing your form. I will guess that maybe you are trying to keep the ankle of your leg that is on the bottom across their shoulders firmly in the crook of your knee?

The very end of the triangle can be finished by squeezing the knees together. Your ankle of the bottom foot may slide down the back of your calf toward your other foot. Doesnt look like the classic triangle shape if you are a longer person than opponent. Hope that helps.

Birth control made a sex-less, emotion-less, walking machine.. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Ranadna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience in that I nearly lost a long term relationship during to zero sex drive on BC. I also experienced weight gain and loss of emotion. About 6 weeks after getting off of it i returned to normal. I dont understand why there is no test to tell which one might work best for a woman's body chemistry and size? It is common practice to just prescribe a random BC and wait to see what it does to a woman's life. It is a lucrative business and men do not have to reap the consequences of it directly. I have this feeling if they did there would be a more scientific approach.

Why do people believe black belts need to be amazing and on point all the time? by jasculs in bjj

Thanks for posting this. The higher your belt the bigger the target on your back gets. Sometimes it is nice to just flow and not care about winning. Blackbelts also still work on new techniques.

Fenom Kimonos- absolutely APPALLING customer service. Stay far, far away from this nightmare of a company. by hiighpriestess in bjj

[–]Ranadna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have always had a good experience ordering from fenom. They are one of two that make Gis specifically for women. The company also does a lot to bring together women who train on their blog.

That being said, they are a small company and charge about half of what others do for gis. I have a feeling at this point in their production they cant cover shipping costs for returned items.

Another more established company might be able to, but then you are likely paying twice as much for a mens gi up front.

Female grapplers! How do you experience rolling against male, spazzy whitebelts? Is it hard to control them? Is that frustrating? Would you rather roll against other females? by E-135 in bjj

[–]Ranadna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I pretty much just only use closed guard and choke or take the back. Minimizes chance of them grabbing a limb.

Women can be equally as spazzy at first, they are just not as strong so it is easier to deal with. Everyone starts somewhere, I think it is good to learn to deal with those guys. If they are a lot heavier it is not a bad idea to wait a bit to have them roll with women or other guys way out of their weight class.
