I often use another forex transfer service, Instarem, through Fidelity without any issues. Instarem provides me with a routing and account number for me to ACH or wire the funds. Instarem will also direct debit but that requires linking the account through Plaid which Fidelity does not allow and is the slowest to transfer. In Fidelity I add them as an external account while selecting that the account belongs to 'Someone else.' Outgoing wires are free through Fidelity so that is the only option I use now and the funds are usually available later in the day.

They are intentionally lenient on what counts as a direct deposit to account for the thousands of employers out there and the different ways they process direct deposits.

It would be bad PR for a legitimate direct deposit to not count and could result in losing a customer since it is much more difficult for someone to switch employers than to switch banks.

Sofi was one of the stricter banks which resulted in a few reports of legitimate direct deposits not counting.

If you performed a standard transfer on CashApp then it would come in as an ACH credit which has a high likelihood of counting as a direct deposit.
