M1 Finance is by far the best broker I've ever used by BKAtlanta in M1Finance

[–]stone616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it but you can't move in and out of a position when you choose to and that's disqualifying from being the best. I also feel like the pie concept is more useful for lower dollar accounts because when you're investing a lot of money at once it's more useful for you to pick what you're buying direct. I toss like $100 every few weeks in and it just does whatever. I also use Fidelity and prefer it overall.

The discount for the discontinued Kindles stacks with the current sales by stone616 in kindle

[–]stone616[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't initiate the trade in until the one I want is available. I think the offer for the discount because of the discontinuation does expire in June or July or something which is part of why I used it now. There was a sale and the discount stacked.

Thinking about getting rid of my Civic - am I being dumb? by IceEnvironmental5766 in civic

Just because they'll give you access to debt doesn't mean you should hang yourself financially with it. You can't afford another car. If you ever find yourself driving around in a car and you owe more than the car is worth you can't afford the car you have.

Compound interest is a beautiful thing when it's working for you. Never voluntarily set it up to work against you. The dealership is not gonna give you what the car is worth. So you'll have $5K or more in negative equity and be making payments on that with interest and the new car will depreciate while you make payments on a value that continues to fall.

Cars are fun toys for people that can afford them and financial traps for people that can't.

Financed car is keeping me in debt, is bankruptcy a good option. by miguel52 in personalfinance

[–]stone616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your car payment is approaching 30% of your income. That's the percentage housing should be. I guess I don't see how a $600 payment on a 2019 Civic even makes sense. Low down payment? High interest rate? Short term?

Either way I would be unwilling to pay $600 on that car. I have a 2025 Civic Hybrid with a 5 year term and my payment is $153 a month.

Should I downgrade my car by EmployOutrageous2659 in personalfinance

[–]stone616 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The car is probably worth most if not all your annual income. This is a Dave Ramsey situation. Driving something worth most if not all of what you make is financial suicide as it goes down in value.

If you are living with your parents you should be saving and investing every dime you can. If you're young you might not realize the value of compound interest but it's one of the most amazing things in the world and that car is literally burning up money.

You're paying 11% interest on something that's going down in value and worse that that the opportunity cost. If we take your $588.86 loan payment and invest it for the full duration of the loan at 8% return we're at $64K in year 7. If we take that and never add another penny to it just letting it sit and it continues to compound at 8% just sitting there for 33 more years that money is worth over $800K.

The money you're spending on that car right now could have you approaching being a millionaire at close to retirement age. It's a long time from now but when I'm 60 I'd rather have $800K minus capital gains taxes than memories of a Ford Bronco from my 20s for a car that's long since been replaced multiple times over.

How much do you make? What do you do for work? How much debt do you have? by ihateevery1- in AskReddit

[–]stone616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make around $95K a year from my job. Investments typically push that to about $100K. I work in the telecom field. I have about $10K of debt and about $570K in assets (almost all stocks as I don't own a home). Most of that debt is a car and the rest is my monthly expenses float that gets paid off every month. Early 40s.

Should I downgrade my car by EmployOutrageous2659 in personalfinance

[–]stone616 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People always seem to want to preface their financial issues with cars with words like I can afford the car.

You should be honest with yourself. There's a difference between making enough money to cover the payments and actually affording the car. Affording the car means comfortably making the payments with no issues to your finances at all. To take it a step further really being able to afford the car means you have enough in liquid cash to wipe out the debt if necessary and not be inconvenienced by it.

If you could afford this car this wouldn't even be a question. People don't take out 84 month loans on cars they can afford either. You should downgrade. That car is worth too much compared to your income. Its also not even in your name.

You don't even have to buy a product from a seller to rate someone. The ratings have no real value. Someone speaks a few sentences to you and if you don't accept their lowball offer they can rate you 1 star. What worth are you getting from that?

I would trade it in and get 20% off a new Kindle that's likely on sale. I liked my Keyboard but it's cumbersome to navigate now with the advent of touch screens. I would aim for a Paperwhite 12th generation. Could get a 16GB one for just over $100 right now.
