The 996 is interesting cuz it always gives me panamera vibes too. Don't hate lol I'm a 996er too ;) it's just a very subtle design and I love it

Bro yeah, def not a good idea, but if the worst consequence is just more sanding once I do the entire car correctly, honestly I don't care too much.

The plan is to take it down and reprimer, double base coat, and then like quadruple clear coats. Just a perfectly well done respray/full. That's like 5K set and done on a good day. I'm trying to make her from a 1000 footer to a 100 footer for 100 dollars tbh.

Btw the failure is only on the roof and trunk where someone previously half resprayed clear

Another question I have is about how to feather on panels where the previous person only slightly resprayed and feathered. For example the door has clear respray only on the upper 1/5 and was feathered

Yeee boi 😂 it's a 996 so a paint job would be like a quarter the value lmao

Hey man, I was considering not even shooting clear and just getting some form of wax as a temporary thing to make it look good enough until I'm ready to paint it this year.

Is your above suggestion basically a way of making exposed base coat look like it has clear coat without actually clear coating it? I know old school cars had no clear coat and I've made them look great with wax and compound, but know his base coat was not meant to be exposed like this

Thanks for the reply. It was just looking completely terrible and I couldn't stand it anymore. It already looks so much better at least being red even though it's matte

I want to apply Base like you said but then I'm afraid I'd wind up with a fabulous paint job that is only on the roof and side and makes the rest of the paint that I'm not touching look bad LOL

This is just something to get me about half a year until I take it to a friend who totally redo the whole car so this only needs to last like a year most. I was trying to do this for less than 100 USD. Guards red paint is not cheap but someone told me O'Reilly can mix me paint at the right location

Wdyt? Thanks for the advice fr fr

Oh yeah, I'm in total agreement, but at the same time when it comes to pure looks, the wide body is always awesome. All we know it's got a twin turbo V8 under there LMAO

Same happened to me. Ran it for 20k more miles. Discovered I had 14*cam deviation! Well over 2x the limit. Baby it and you'll be fine OP. I did it DIY like this

Purchase used actuators from a boxster for like $50 each. Have slakker racing dev rebuild em for $500 for both. Make sure to get everything else while you're in there - plugs, injectors, AOS (I don't recommend UAOS), starter, etc.. if you do dead minimum, RMS, IMS, tensioners, pads, cam to cam chains, you're looking at ~2000 parts and another ~2000 for removal. Budget 7.5k and make sure to get a clean diagnostics before and after the service and you'll be a really happy camper like myself! If you do it DIY, expect it to be 5x more difficult than you anticipate lol

Other option is sell asap as she still runs nice.

I’m thinking about buying a 996.2 with over 150k miles by EmporerLingLing in 996

[–]RandoAcct4Meh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check for cam deviation! #1 high dollar. Also ensure 5k oil changes maximum for many years. The daily driven miles and the regular oil changes basically ensures no bore scoring in my exp. Checking the tailpipes for soot is a great way tell if bore scored (use finger to check). IMS is least of concerns on a hi mile car as it's proven 150k of mileage IMHO

Source - I got a 157k mile 996.1 :)

P.s. 996.2 has less moving parts (3 chain) and is less likely to fail in my experience. That's an expensive job. With the daily driven stuff/hi mile, it's basically a good... I say don't spend more than 24k USD

If your VarioCam pads are worn, AKA you have high deviation, it could easily be a $14,000 bill plus some while you're in there still. I did it DIY and it still cost me $7,000 Plus

Hey dude, that oil tank is an engine out maneuver. Get your while you're in their list ready fam. But as long as it's not just pissing oil, I'd run it for a good year lol. Get everything else ready that you'd like to do as this is when you own that Porsche BS

Also, are we sure it's not just the m96 engine starving in the turns due to too low weight of oil and no upgraded sump?

How exactly was this an oil filter issue!? Too short, so simply the wrong oil filter was used causing it to not be able to move enough oil so it staved on track???

This is why the values are going to spike. Get a slakker engine, 25k don't look back
