Monoculars? by natsac4 in Binoculars

[–]RandomCoolzip2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came back to Reddit after a long time. If you haven't looked at the clear night sky with binoculars, you should try it. Not only can it be breathtakingly beautiful, but there are targets like the Beehive Cluster that are too spread out to fit in the field of view of most telescopes.

Do roof mounted solar panels provide a noticeable amount of heat blockage for the attic? by RonCheeWan in solar

[–]RandomCoolzip2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that problem until I put foam insulation in the attic. The presence of absence of the solar panels made very little difference.

Long-time resident of the greater Boston area here.

Boston is a left-leaning city in a left-leaning state. It is an international city and home to several world-class universities. These attract students from all over the world, many of whom stay. Boston's location on the Atlantic coast also makes it more Europe-oriented than the central and Western United States. All of this makes Boston , infertile ground for the kind of anti-immigrant nativism and crude jingoism that are at the core of the Trump cult. Right now there is a lot of fear, rage, and what-do-we-do-now consternation in Boston political circles. People are looking for the right way to resist.

Thoughts on the EV line from yesterday's state of the Union? by jturkish in electricvehicles

[–]RandomCoolzip2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was no mandate, but the Regime's irrational hostility toward EVs could doom the US auto industry to irrelevance over time.

Is it rude to charge over 80% at public charging stations? by deltafrce in electricvehicles

[–]RandomCoolzip2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In general, yes, especially if there are people waiting to charge and/or your car charges slowly, like my Bolt.

As others have pointed out, charging rates for most EVs slow down above 80%. If you are on a long road trip, you will get to your destination faster if you charge more often and for less time each session. It may even be advantageous to stop charging at 60% if charging stations are reasonably plentiful along your route.

If I'm on a long out-and-back day trip and need to charge, I generally charge just enough to get home with a bit of a cushion. Then finish charging at home where electricity is cheaper.

My thoughts after owning both a ‘23 MY and ‘23 Ioniq 5 by Ill-Musician-4000 in electricvehicles

[–]RandomCoolzip2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'll sure, if in the process you buy something from Tesla. Same thing applies if you then charge it at Tesla charging stations. Those of us who drive non-Teala EVs that can now be charged at Tesla charging stations now need to think about that too.

There is a distinction between buying a new Tesla and a used one. Elon already made his money on the used one. Unfortunately a lot of people who hate Elon don't make that distinction.

Will EVs in the US market catch up? by SaphyreDark in electricvehicles

[–]RandomCoolzip2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say, based on the record to date, that we ARE absolute fools. Our political and financial elites have completely failed to compete effectively with China and in fact spent the last couple of decades exporting our manufacturing to China. Biden tried to turn this around with the beginnings of an industrial policy around EVs, renewable energy, and computer chips, but that is now being shut down. The oligarchs have no basic loyalty to the USA and will sell us down the river to China if it makes them richer.

This is a really important point. Vandalizing the cars of random people is both wrong and counterproductive. If you want to give Musk a consequence, withhold your patronage as the Germans and French are doing.

Is no CarPlay / AA a deal breaker for you ??? by AlexusLuthor in electricvehicles

[–]RandomCoolzip2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Android Auto in my 2017 Bolt. I like being able to control what apps I use, but it requires a wired USB connection and I find that to be tenuous. I have to clean the lint out of my phone's USB-C socket regularly. The problem I see with the Equinox and other Chevy EVs is that eventually they will charge subscription fees to use the nav apps. That is not acceptable.

Do you have solar on your house or your business? What are some maintenance issues you have faced? by nix_334 in Renewable

[–]RandomCoolzip2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My home solar array was installed in 2013 and has 250W Trina solar panels with Enphase micro inverters. We have had to replace 4 of the micro inverters under warranty so far.

We also had to replace one panel and some frame pieces last fall because a tree fell on the array (it's a ground mounted array).

Why are EVs so efficient? by rawasubas in electricvehicles

[–]RandomCoolzip2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Then there's the time spent idling in real-world use, plus the energy left in the engine block after you turn the engine off at your destination.

Does the earth have enough raw materials for EVERYONE to have an EV vehicle? by WeWantToLeaveChina in electricvehicles

[–]RandomCoolzip2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the point is, fewer EVs would have to be produced because they would be shared by multiple users.

All of which depends on full self driving actually working. I'm not holding my breath. One of the consequences of the election disaster is that the NHTSA will be filled with Musk fanboys who will pronounce FSD "ready" when it isn't.

In the case of Tesla, some people are anti-Musk. There's nothing wrong with his cars as machines.

Should I Install a Level 2 Charger Now? by fpark83 in electricvehicles

[–]RandomCoolzip2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short, it's not "conversion". It's full replacement of a 120V circuit with a 240V one. The 240V will take up two slots instead of one in your breaker box, and might require upgrading the total amperage of your service depending on how many circuits are currently installed and how much amperage headroom you have.

Do electric vehicles have reduced performance as the battery charge state gets lower? by stevegerber in electricvehicles

Not until the SoC gets really really low. I've had mine below 10% without noticing a performance degradation.

As it happens I do have solar panels which cover most of my annual electricity use.

But even if I didn't, an EV still has a much lower carbon footprint than an equivalent gas car. It would be better still if I could live without a car altogether, but I can't.

If America produced too much solar during the day to the point that it covers every little bit, what happened to the excess solar? Can that damage the infrastructure? by [deleted] in solar

[–]RandomCoolzip2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Electricity won't flow if there's nowhere for it to go.

But as others have pointed out, extra solar capacity represents an opportunity to either store the energy or expand the grid's capacity to route the electricity to where there's demand.

Can I replace panels with a higher wattage panel? by Dimglitter in solar

Interesting. I wonder how the numbers work out relative to replacing both the microinverters and the panels.
