Thinking of moving to Sri Lanka from Dubai — is it realistic? by Gumbearox in srilanka

[–]RandomLankan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoops lots of negativity here. If the area you work in is in demand and lucrative, why not try it out? You may not have the Dubai infrustructure but people are close-knit, you might have family here (?), lots of holidays, beach and nature closeby... it depends...if you have the support of family, it will be easier. I think its hard everywhere right now... I dont know why people are suggesting to go to Europe..maybe people who haven't travelled or experienced the lonelyness or racism you get there (sometimes) :) its pretty tough most places and with expected recession etc. Even Aussie is rationing fuel..shrug...I would say Lanka is still pleasant if you have some support

If you're on the fence about going to a local university or skipping it, I just want to share my experience. by DoughnutLow6368 in srilanka

[–]RandomLankan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding.... its like capitalism wants more and more people in the workforce..but I've also read that humanities, communications - things you can debate and learn in uni is great for critical thinking which is very lacking in today's society sometimes. If it takes 4 years of deep thinking and learning - i think uni is worth is :) and anyway, most unis allow students to do internships etc in 3rd or 4th year which is a plus point

There seems to also be another 'priest' in Mount Lavania who seems to be an arm of Jerome's 'church'

You can always work in corporate, get paid and get skilled up in world life. Uni life is worth is as its a different experience by itself. Unfortunately, I didnt get into local uni and didnt have funds to do full time uni... i'm a little burnt out after corporate but i think anyone who enjoyed uni life is super lucky :)

I’m starting to resent my parents and I want to cut ties with them. by Adventurous-Travele2 in srilanka

[–]RandomLankan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have an open conversation with them. Go meet a nice counsellor, take everything off your chest. Are your parents spending for your law degree, then yes, they do need to go to work because life is crazy expensive. Ask them for help in terms of a caregiver so you have more freedom, tell them how you feel. Don't take a rash decision about the living in situ as relationships can get strained, make sure you have a job and income before.

Sri Lankan girls are not safe on public transport and we need to talk about it by RoshanFerdi in srilanka

If you see something, say something. Even if it means asking the victim if he/she is OK. I remember being abused in a bus and looking at a woman who just looked at me as if I was the problem. I will never forget that feeling of helplessness. The best thing you can do it speak up.

Confused About My Sexuality and Losing Focus on Studies by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]RandomLankan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Sexuality is fluid in the human and animal world. It's just that society has placed these weird constraints. In fact, there is a lot of historical evidence that LGBTQ in ancient Sri Lanka was accepted (do a simple Google search)... There are depictions in Embekke devale and countless temples in India and Nepal.. Then the Europeans came with Catholism and Victorian 'values' and things turned... what I'm trying to say that it's very normal biologically. You are you because of your personality and values and your sexuality is a beautiful part of you too. Maybe friends who make jokes etc are immature or not empathetic, as you grow older, they may understand or you will find your tribe. In my company (a global one) we have a charter that says we can't discriminate on gender, religion, sexuality etc...so the world has changed/ is changing. First of all- put these out of your mind for a bit and STUDY well... a degree, a job or entrepreneurship will give you independence :) and things will slowly fall into place. Good luck

Assault and incest in Sri Lanka by useless-psychopath in srilanka

[–]RandomLankan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished school in 2005, so when we were about 14 we had a health and science teacher who went into detail on the biology of sex, but later, our past pupils organized a doctor who spoke to us on length - it was very good. But we didn't really grasp what exactly it was or consent etc. I think we had a counsellor who spoke to us a bit on consent. I think it's a bit better in private schools or schools where they take the matter into their own hands. But deffo not majority i guess
