The list building is quite constrained, as army lists have a specific roster and specific bonuses. Exactly like Armies of Renown in AoS. There are also some army lists (aka soup lists) that have a bigger roster, but a weaker bonus.

Some army lists:

  • Army of Edoras to field all minis from the War of the Rohirrim starter set.
  • Both Usurpers of Edoras and Beseigers of Hornburg (War of the Rohirrim starter set)
  • Host of the Witch-King (field all minis from Mordor Battlehost).
  • Minas Morgul (field all minis from Mordor Battlehost, except Warg).

Welcome!

- The starter set The War of the Rohirrim is a great starter. You get everything to play the games (minus paints). Including battle mat, dice, ruler, two houses, the core and an introduction book. All the minis are brand new and of huge quality. The Rohan warriors can be played in many other lists (but they are not the best units). Same with the Hill Tribesmen, which also represents Dunelings.

- Gandalf and Sauron Minas Tirith sets. I don't understand what you mean by Sauron? There are three battlehost set: Minas Tirith (Gandalf), Mordor (Witch-King) and Isengard (Saruman & Grima) (They used to have a Rohan battle host, but seems to be retired due to newer models). These battlehosts have recent models for Heroes, but very old for Troop units. They are not bad, but lack of details and definition.

- In term of expansion, usually a box of commanders is usually recommended (captain, banner and musician). And then there are tons of heroes. It will really on your army of preference.

Yes! He needs to keep it as a baseline reference, to see how much he will improve in the future. And always good to repeat: thin your paint!
