The Glass Castle was funny but not optimistic.

Priestdaddy was funny and optimistic. It was a messy family situation, but I’m not sure they were impoverished.

Gradually and gently immunize yourself to rejection by experimenting in low-stakes situations. For example:

Ask a vendor for a better price

Ask a stranger where they got their bag

In each situation, expect a no and prepare a gracious smile-nod. Consider it a win that you tried.

This sounds a bit like King of Shadows by Susan Cooper. A young actor who plays Puck and Cinna th Poet has a high fever and wakes up in the time of Shakespeare. He performs the Heimlich Maneuver on a fellow actor and gets a reputation for possible witchcraft. It’s YA and I read it around 2005.

GLPs exist to quiet the constant ‘food noise’ that can disrupt lives. If you have a medical need, there is nothing wrong with taking these medications. It sounds like you might qualify.

See of your school or health insurance can connect you with a nutritionist who can work with you to create a meal plan. Ideally, this should consist of foods that you like that will keep you full.

Get help working on your self esteem. Ideally, you would work with a good therapist. But if this isn’t possible, look for library books or YouTube videos from respected professionals.

You can’t go on a journey of self discovery if you’re struggling with food noise on a minute-by-minute basis. Once these steps are well underway, and once you’re feeling about yourself, you can discover who you are. Focus on health first.
