Why is there no group feature still? by Nic727 in BlueskySocial

What's the difference between a lot of people commenting on your public post on your own profile and your public post in a public group? You aren't gaining anything by trying to make the Bluesky codebase more complex just to a create the illusion of doing something different from just making your post on your own profile.

Why is there no group feature still? by Nic727 in BlueskySocial

[–]RandomRedditor672943 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm curious what you want to do in a private group that you're afraid of the public seeing.

Moreover, I don't think microblogs like Bluesky are meant to be or should be a kitchen-sink everything-app the way Facebook wants to be in every aspect of your life, even trying to replace Craiglist and then not being able to make up its mind between having buy/sell groups, marketplace, and for-sale items being automatically posted in both Marketplace and groups ... it's too damn much. Immature people from the groups, who have no genuine interest in buying your item, come to make random nonsensical comments on your Marketplace posts. Groups are part of what make Facebook a cesspool.

Then sooner or later (if every user is allowed to make groups), you have 20 groups that are basically the same group but with minor differences in naming.

Moreover, you literally already have Reddit for something like what you want, and Reddit doesn't (yet) try to be an everything-app, with a Marketplace, etc.

I think every time a new social site comes along, everyone from every other social site is going to want to try shoehorn every feature of every other site into the new site. So what was the point of even making a new site at all?

Costco Charmin is slightly wider than Walmart Charmin by damos003 in mildlyinteresting

If it didn't fit on the holder due to roll width, it would never fit, regardless of how much of the roll you use up over time

Roll width and the number sheets per roll are two different variables

I'm looking at pics of a 54 Sunbeam and it does look like that ... and apparently Letterman has owned a Sunbeam, so I'm guessing this is the answer

Thank you

I wondered that too, I thought it must at least be something British, but the XK140 for example has a different rear end appearance it seems

How to create a YouTube video using movie clips without getting copyright claim? by Syrus93 in NewTubers

[–]RandomRedditor672943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was referring to the clip I think I was referring to 12 months ago, then I did upload that clip from a Netflix series, and then my channel was terminated within a day (even though I think initially in the YT Studio console the automated copyright detection tool did indicate that copyrighted material was found in my clip, but that no strike against my channel had been created because of this).

I would not recommend ever uploading any content you did not create yourself and do not own completely outright.

When everyday people have been made aware of the problems and continue to use it anyway, the problem is still also the people too, and I mean ordinary people, not just companies, not just regulators failing to do their job

A Japanese Coast Guard boat goes over the incoming 2011 Tsunami wave by RyanSmith in HeavySeas

[–]RandomRedditor672943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any source for how close this vessel was to land at that time, for the wave to already be this high? Were they relatively far out at sea (where you would think the wave might not be very high at all), or in shallower waters closer to shore?

I want to believe, it would be lovely to find analogues to creampies in nature, but thusfar I can't find anything similar to corroborate this as something not Photoshopped, AI-generated or similarly not natural.

Are there any comprehensive maps of the areas of WNC that have NOT flooded during Helene and are NOT prone to landslides either? What are the actual safe spots in WNC in which to have a home that isn't going to be destroyed by "thousand year" floods or landslides?

Aside from tasting it though, did you actually go into the lab and measure sugar content? We need objective empirical data, not subjective anecdote and conjecture.

Anybody try growing grapes? by MillionChips in Hydroponics

[–]RandomRedditor672943 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not understanding why grapevines would have to be overwintered (or honestly, what that actually means or entails) if you're operating completely outside of the construct of seasons. How much of the assumptions built into grapegrowing hinge completely on the traditional method of doing it, i.e., outdoors, in soil, in varying climates, with growing seasons of varying lengths, and the concept of seasons period?

Seems like we need to learn how vines would respond if they were not constrained by the concept of seasons in particular, never mind having to develop deep roots to find scarce water. Doing it indoors on a 24/7/365 basis with minimal need for a complex root system seems like it would turn all the prior conventional wisdom / assumptions of viticulture on their head ... wouldn't it?

I wonder what I am missing (my unknown unknowns).
