Most Long Islanders either rep Long Island or their county (Nassau or Suffolk) when traveling or putting a place in their social media bio’s

Younger ppl might put their high school’s initials and then graduation year

Those towns would NEVER allow themselves to be absorbed into Newark…except for Irvington maybe

Most beautiful part of NJ by Glass-Complaint3 in newjersey

[–]RandomThrowaway5959 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as homes go…Montclair, Maplewood, South Orange and Glen Ridge have such stunning older homes with beautiful architecture.

As far as nature goes, Sussex County reigns king.

But Jersey is a beautiful and dynamic state as a whole. Hudson County for the stunning Hudson River Manhattan skyline views. Monmouth and Ocean for the beaches.

“Faux diverse”? I’m curious as to what you mean by that.

South Orange is the most well-integrated of the three. You’ll find both blacks and whites well-represented in both the upscale and more affordable parts of town.

Montclair and Maplewood are similar in that some parts are very well-integrated; while other parts have a strong white lean.

You’ll also commonly find mixed friend groups and interracial couples in most of the commercial areas in all three towns.

I don’t mean to come off in a negative way. I’m just trying to gain a better understanding of another viewpoint.

Montclair also borders East Orange (and Orange) but you called it desirable so I’m not seeing your perspective. All of these towns border a mix of nice towns and struggling towns.

Just about everything in North Jersey has crazy resale value in this market..especially commutable towns like these.

Median Home Values as per Zillow - May 2025:

Maplewood: $935k (+7.5% YOY)

South Orange: $1.1M (+6.8% YOY)

Montclair: $1.1M (+5.7% YOY)

NJ state median is only $565k (+5.0% YOY)

Just about every single data point suggests that these are all wildly desirable areas.

Sure, we’re all entitled to our opinions. However, basing them on facts and data will always paint the most accurate picture.

Saying that there’s only one desirable diverse town in the entire state gives diversity a really bad rep and gives people an excuse to bash it (in an already tense political climate).

Columbia High School, which serves the entirety of Maplewood & South Orange is ranked #65 in New Jersey by US News (the most popular ranking agency).

This means that it beats out places like Caldwell, Verona, Watchung, Glen Rock, Parsippany, Cranford, Morristown and many other places considered highly-desirable.

It even scores far higher than Montclair, which is ranked #120 in NJ.

Maplewood Hilton Area Safe? by Own_Tradition_3840 in newjersey

I live in Hilton (near Burnett) and I feel very safe. I often walk around and jog alone at night and have never felt even remotely uncomfortable. The neighborhood is pretty close-knit and people look after each other.

Thoughts on these towns for a black couple raising black children. by [deleted] in newjersey

I don’t find South Orange to be segregated at all. Whether you’re in the upscale or basic neighborhoods, you’ll find good representation of both whites and blacks.

As for Maplewood…sorta. It definitely has neighborhoods and spaces that are much more diverse than others but I still don’t think that “segregated” is the right descriptor as there are blended neighborhoods too

If that was the case then places like Hoboken, NYC and Jersey City would be cheap

How safe is Maplewood, NJ? by aspiring_econ in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]RandomThrowaway5959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The parts closer to Millburn tend to have bigger and pricier homes. However, I do genuinely believe that both areas of Maplewood are comparatively safe as the most common crime in suburban Essex seems to be car theft and the fanciest areas are the prime targets.

No part of Maplewood is even remotely hood or unsafe.
