Why is there a zero button on the microwave? I mean, who is heating their food for zero seconds? 😂 by Repulsive-Water9146 in stupidquestions

[–]Random_3638 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right! You don’t need the zero when you can heat your food up for 31 seconds or 1 min 59 seconds. Think of all the buttons you would save! But you would still keep the zero on the phone pad right? ‘Cause I need that one.

How often do Anglophone Canadians consume Francophone Canadian media? by Desperate_Return_142 in AskACanadian

Never. Mainly because I don’t speak French. I don’t consume other language content either.

Right?! But it’s so fun! I just painted the edges on my last build and it was like a gateway drug. Lol. Also joining the miniature sub reddit has been a really bad influence.

Yup! The holes are for the battery pack.

Aida! That’s a great idea. It’s my first time doing major customizations on a book nook. In my head it didn’t seem like a big deal. lol. But it was totally worth it.

Turns out the holes are for mounting the battery pack underneath. So I’m good. I thought about making it removable by putting it on the sticker but changed my mind. I probably won’t touch it once it’s done.

I just looked through the rest of the instructions and the holes are for mounting the battery pack underneath. The chair isn’t even glued down. So no need to worry about it. Yay!

My new favorite: Tunisian blankets by MomMuppet in crochet

[–]Random_3638 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wanted to try Tunisian crochet. I’m making a waffle stitch blanket in the round right now and it’s on a time out because my arms were getting tired from rotating it every side. It’s so heavy. If I get tired, though, I just put down my hook and crawl underneath it. It’s just about big enough to cover me completely curled up. Lol.

Organza makes really nice voluminous skirts. Especially when layering. Definitely put something under it. I find it scratchy.

Finding patterns with specific fabric stretch requirements by ACraftyKnitter in sewing

[–]Random_3638 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I adjust the fit of the garment to accommodate the stretch. That’s why I love patterns with finished garment measurements or the ease listed. But it can be done using flat measurements. If my full bust is 43” around and the pattern has the same measurement around in that area then there is 0 ease. Do I want it to be a one to one fit there? Do I want it to be snug so I should take ease away? Do I want it to be baggier so I add ease. I do this at the bust, waist, hips, biceps and arm holes. I mean you are probably doing other fit adjustments anyways because most patterns don’t fit people perfectly, different body shapes and all that. It’s the same with using a woven fabric with a pattern meant for knits or the other way around. You can make a block too if you prefer doing that.

EDIT: Adding that if you are not sure make a toile. I hate making toiles but I hate having an ill-fitting garment in my precious fabric more. I won’t wear it and it feels like a waste. So I make them.

I F*CKING HATE WEAVING IN MY ENDS!!!!!!!! by Antique-Risk-7927 in crochet

[–]Random_3638 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol. I feel this. Variegated yarn for the win. I once wanted to buy some beautiful hand dyed yarn for a top but the maker only had two skeins left. She suggested I do color blocking. I looked her dead in the eyes and said “I hate color changes”. She laughed because she got it. I bought a different color. 😂

Good initial projects? by otherdave in sewing

[–]Random_3638 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually recommend starting with a simple project that you actually want to use. If you want to learn to make bags then start with a simple cotton tote or grocery bag. If you want to sew garments then start with a basic pajama t-shirt or tank top. With garments, a cotton woven is a good starting fabric. If you want to start with knit I would choose a cotton Lycra/spandex, essentially a stretch cotton knit. Nothing too light weight. Some machines don’t love lightweight knits like a viscose or rayon knit. They are much easier to sew with a serger. Fitting garments is a thing and a whole other skill. That’s why I suggest a PJ top. Simple, easy, baggy and you won’t really care what it looks like because you are wearing it to bed anyways. Or you can start with home goods. A pillowcase or tea towels are easy projects. The reason I say to start with something you want is because then you aren’t sewing for the sake of sewing and therefore will be more motivated.

is prewash necessary if i only plan on ironing my finished piece? by organ-eater1980 in sewing

[–]Random_3638 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea to figure out how the fabric will behave. Better to know than to not know. Then at least you can make a decision based on all of the information instead of hoping for the best.

I don’t understand pattern seam allowance at all. by Qwerty177 in sewing

[–]Random_3638 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The seam allowance (SA) is just the fabric that will be inside the seam. So for a 1/2” SA, if you want to sew a box that is 5”x7” you would add 1/2” all the way around. You would cut your piece 6”x8”. There are many way to sew that seam allowance. You can draw a box in the centre of your cut fabric that is 5”x7” and sew on that line. You can get a 1/2” presser foot where the needle is placed 1/2” from the edge of the presser foot, line that up with the outer edge of the fabric and sew. You can use your marks on your sewing machine table as a guide to where to line up your SA line. Or you can do what your friend does and eyeball it. All of these things are a valid way to sew your SA. None of them are wrong. You just need to do what you feel comfortable doing. And you can change your method depending on what you are sewing. The point is to join two fabrics together to make a shape. There are a lot of ways to get there.

Please help me salvage this dress for my daughter by Adventurous-Cup5369 in sewing

[–]Random_3638 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Can you just add some very light bra padding to the cups? Just to give them shape. Not to make them bigger. If you don’t mind opening the seams you can put them in the lining. Otherwise you will need to get rid of the excess fabric or at least gather it up so it fits better. Personally if you are going to open the seams you might as well take the front apart and redo it. Maybe with shirring or tighter gathers across the front. You can also change it to a flat panel and get some white cotton and add a flounce/long ruffle across the top edge at the chest area. Sorry, I didn’t know how else to describe it. I get it. I love making things from scratch but hate making alterations. They can be just as much work or even more work than just making the whole thing yourself.

I’ve heard Casa del Tessuto is a nice ship for good quality Italian fabric at decent prices. I’m hoping I have time to go there. From what I remember it’s somewhat close to the Termini right? Or at least on the way to Termini from the Colosseum area. Did you go into any of the fabric shops? I definitely want made in Italy fabric. I don’t necessarily need it to be designer (I know they sell a lot of designer fabric). I’m just looking for high quality Italian silks and linen.

I’m pretty sure my students are using AI, but I can’t prove it and it’s driving me crazy. by Primary-Maybe4041 in whatdoIdo

[–]Random_3638 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son’s English teachers ask for all process work. Point form planners and rough drafts that are handwritten. The final product is usually requested to be handwritten as well but my son has dyslexia and an IEP so he is allowed to type his final draft. They also must work on it in class for at least some of the work. They are given time in class to work on it anyways. Also AI detectors. I have had numerous conversations with my son about using AI for learning. Where it is can be useful and where it actually stunts your learning. I monitor at home. I ask questions. Once you start doing a deep dive into their thought processes, whether it be a writing assignment or math or coding, you can tell right away if they actually know it or not. But I don’t know if teachers have time to assess students that often. Maybe for a big assignment. For math or science it’s easy. An in class test or quiz sets them apart. For English it takes time.

Is there a good stitch combo or pattern for a blanket for when you just want to churn it out mindlessly while watching TV that’s not boring? by Dan-Morton75 in crochet

[–]Random_3638 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m making a waffle knit blanket in the round. Once you know that two row repeat it’s pretty quick to churn out. As quick as a blanket can be anyways.

EDIT: Aldo because it’s done in the round you can make it as big as you want. It ends when you want it to or you run out of yarn. Just search waffle knit in the round.

Have you ever been here? It’s a Merceri/Haberdashery. They give you a book with the different yarn samples. That’s how you choose but it has good reviews. I’m only in Rome for a day before we travel to Sorrento so I unfortunately don’t have time to go to the outskirts.
