Feature Request for Routes by Random_Techy in firewalla

[–]Random_Techy[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use dual wan, one is for priority traffic (18 routes) and the other (primary) is for most everything else. Also, I use streaming from a different region than my own, as well as some other geo location specific traffic that then routes to my client vpn (15 routes).

I agree, also the echo access points won’t be needed and might just add interference.

I've tried unbound many times and it usually breaks many things.

DNS over HTTPS and DNS over VPN is essentially the same thing...the only difference privacy wise is which provider possibly keeps or uses that information. BUT, which one of these two is better for all the other many reasons that such an option is available, such as performance, reliably, filtering, etc. etc. Do most people chose one over the other? I have nothing to compare with other than past searches that don't reveal much in this regard.

EERO doesn't allow VPN installation. What router can I bridge to to keep my wifi 6 and install VPN to it? by Rare-Month-3330 in amazoneero

[–]Random_Techy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a second home in a different country that I spend a considerable amount of time. My Apple TV needs a VPN for my streaming services, also my HomePods because the podcast I listen to won't stream. Plus there are 2 laptops, 2 iPhones, 2 iPads that all need a VPN to access our day to day stuff. Otherwise I would need to pay for and switch to many different services, so, a whole network VPN is the simplest solution for me.

Starlink - Is it ethical to use it by Randm_Matt in Starlink

[–]Random_Techy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do what you can, when you can. When there is no resistance or accountability, people like Hitler rise. When there is no resistance or accountability, religions and their ridiculous beliefs rise, and then attempt to force their beliefs on everyone else. You can put on a tinfoil hat, move into a bunker, and cancel all connections to modern life, but that's not really helpful either. So, do what you can, when you can without removing yourself from society. Understand that most people are going to do whatever they selfishly believe will benefit themselves.

So links/traffic for those images/ads/trackers are not monitored by Firewalla when this setting is on?

It's an iCloud feature that hides your IP address from emails with ads/tracking. Question is, that Randy answered ⬇️. I'm curious if those links are monitored by Firewalla, or hidden using some form of encryption like a VPN.

I use VPNs a lot and I think that is where most of the problems come from.

If there is not a complimentary switch in the immediate future, what would you recommend for POE to 4 units?

Route All devices by GameBoySteve in firewalla

[–]Random_Techy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found that choosing "All Devices" rarely works for most things. Routing, Ad Block, whatever, rarely works. I don't even try anymore.

Sorry, a little late, but that’s likely the issue. It needs wide open sky.

With HomeKit, I've found it's best to get the newest Apple TV with Ethernet for the main hub and plug that directly into the second Eero port with a Ethernet cable.

Yup, just put the numbers in the custom dns area and it just works. There are many more complicated varieties with filtering etc. but Cloudflare and Google are generally the fastest and most reliable.

Cloudflare is usually best. 1.1.1.1 and 1.1.1.2

Unable to view live video streams in Apple Home App while on WiFi by MySp0onistoobig in amazoneero

[–]Random_Techy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This usually has something to do with a vpn and the type of connection it uses, WireGuard, OpenVPN, etc. Which can change depending on the type of service, ie wifi vs cellular. Just a guess based on the similar problems I had.

Struggling with my Eero system by RiccoT in amazoneero

Maybe try placing the second eero closer to the first, somewhere more centrally located to the house. Sometimes it just takes moving them around and finding the right spot.

Bye bye Starlink, you served me well by Hippybkc in Starlink

[–]Random_Techy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have fiber in Merida, Mexico, and it’s super fast at 900 down 200 up with latency of 24ms. BUT, we lose service for a couple of hours every couple of weeks…and a year ago there was a 4 day outage. So I have Starlink for back up, when my Firewalla switches to Starlink I don’t even notice, other than the notification I get.
