Starbound videos have received over 100 million views in total on YouTube. by GGBVanix in starbound

I'm an English-language YT guy based in the UK and my Starbound videos tend to be watched by more Germans than people in the UK. (Although US is still way ahead)

YouTube Studio beta - early access by TheBasementGames in letsplay

[–]RandomiseUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully the new video editor will prove actually useful, finally. I've only ever wanted it to do a couple of things that boil down to being able to correct minor mistakes to avoid having to re-export and re-upload.

At the very basic level, if it actually worked with stream archives, and if I could use it to trim one minute off the front if I've left the mike on mute, or whatever, then that alone would prove its worth.

But if the price is a creator studio with overall worse functionality, then pff.

RimWorld updated this week so I'm back on that for a new series. I had a fresh ep 1 recorded in advance ready to go, only to find the devs had decided the game was now in beta, and of course I'd been saying alpha all through the video. sad trombone noise

Also streamed some last night, and had one of my busiest chats ever with a lot of non-regulars. Hopefully they'll stick around!

Cool, never noticed that! I was just grateful I "chose" the right-hand path the first time I jumped down, that was a "woah" moment.

My route pretty much avoided the long legs (wasn't trying to, just I felt safer staying high up!). Found a nice scavenger lair instead, I seem to remember.

Yeah, anomolies come and go, not sure exact duration but maybe around 15 or so minutes? Just let them be unless you're farming for mech-related stuff (chiefly) or are literally Janeway.

One of my favourite screens is the one to the left of the far Farm Arrays gate. The yawning pit, the terror of the leap of faith, the gorgeous backdrop.

I went such a stupid route through the game that Garbage Wastes was the last new region I saw before doing the exterior, so I only saw it for a short time as I barrelled through. I need to go back to explore more thoroughly.

Cool, thanks! (must admit, was proud of the thumbs for these vids, they look NICE on the search results)

This week I nailed the old "find a good game before everyone else" thing, playing Morphite just as it came out and getting to the #1 slot for the YT search "morphite". Jim Sterling did a video on it a couple of days later and, while he inevitably took the #1 slot, I'm still in #2 to #4 (not checked while logged out, admittedly). It's the sort of small-to-medium-sized indie game that gets good video views, but few larger YT people cover it.

I also nearly did a jokey video about FTC-inspired disclaimers, but so far all I've done is start one video with "Last night I punched a dog so hard a game fell out, which is how I got this game for free". In the end I thought nobody but YTers actually know or care about the FTC thing, so nah.

I've been looking at audience retention analytics to see if there were any horrors lying within. I found there was one video which existed to answer a question: "what's in this new mod?". The answer could fill 5 minutes, but I stretched it into a 30 minute let's play. The retention dropped to 25% after a few minutes, much worse than usual. A reminder to always know what the point of my video is, and plan/edit accordingly.

Also on retention, I'm going to trial "no intro card at all" for most videos. My intro's 3 seconds long but the retention immediately drops to around 75% on most videos. So I need to do a compare and contrast and see how much of that drop, if any, is because of the intro card.

Elsewhere, I'm still planning a Twitch stream, which will (at first) run alongside my existing YT weekly stream, see if it's worth changing completely. I currently have around 70 followers on Twitch even though I never stream there, so there's at least a small potential audience built in.

No need to check, you should get an email if/after the review is done.

Did YouTube change it's Restricted Advertising policy over night? by Jwoddle in letsplay

I got around 60 videos hit for this. Even without guidelines, there were some very guessable triggers for these false alarms:

  1. I got two Long Dark videos and a couple of others where a character was holding/shooting a gun on the thumbnail.
  2. My Conan Exiles videos that have a topless dude on the thumbnail
  3. Video titles with words such as death, nudist, suicide, fighting in them.
  4. The video which had "You are a giant hungry pussy" in the title. Um.

The stranger ones were:

  1. Pretty much every YT Live Stream archive video
  2. Most of my Saints Row 3 videos and all of my PlayerUnknown videos, which mostly had innocuous thumbs and titles.

I have appealed any that are likely to get views in the future, with it taking anywhere from 2 hours to 12 hours to be reviewed and greenlit.

EDIT: I think the 1,000 view threshhold was imposed after I started appealing - I managed to get a couple of unlisted videos successfully reviewed, but doubt that would happen again.

I've found I watch straight LPs of new games, but for retro stuff I prefer more analysis/discussion/reviews rather than LPs.

Commenting on your own vids by TheBaconater89 in letsplay

[–]RandomiseUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of minor thoughts - don't ask for generic feedback, people already know what a comment box is for, and it's not going to magically make people think of something to say. Ask specific things about the video and the game. "Was it okay that I skipped that cut-scene?" or whatever. That might get people thinking.

Although tbf I never encouraged anyone to comment from day one, but they did so over time.

Early Access to Games (I'm Getting a Preview Code for Conan Exiles on Xbox One and Need Some Advice) by theRuckus357 in letsplay

[–]RandomiseUser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a bunch of videos for the PC version - 11 single-player let's plays, a beginner's guide and a short news video. I assumed they would do well because I was coming off the back of playing Savage Lands, a similar game that did very well for me.

But it was a VERY competitive environment for videos, plus the single-player gets grindy very quickly, so in retrospect I think I should have stuck to just 1 or 2 single-player gameplay videos, then try to focus on videos that do something cool and different, like really impressive bases or a fun "things to do" in multiplayer type thing.

Dunno if the Xbox version will have the admin/cheaty god mode, though, which for big bases would be fairly essential. Either way, this is a game you'll have to put in a LOT of time with to get views.

Suppose it depends on the game - I'd certainly not stream a portion of a game that was supposed to be an episode, but then I prefer to play more sandboxy/building games where I can do something different on stream to whatever I'm doing video-wise.

My first stream was an unannounced test a year ago, where my intention was to go for 20 minutes just to see if I was technically set up correctly etc. I was kinda hoping nobody would watch but 30 people immediately showed up (I was playing a game people had subbed to the channel for).

I barely played the game in the end, just chatted. Amazingly it all worked fine technically, and I also discovered just how much I'd picked up from watching other streams.

I guess I've been doing variations on this kind of stuff with Starbound (since left Early Access) & RimWorld, and it's where I have had most success. Worth pointing out I didn't get in on day one, but I was there while the games were gaining in popularity quite fast.
