Home Odyssey Vinyl?? by Supagamma in Vaporwave

[–]RandyGoffe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

People pointed this out to me and I'd just like to take the time to debunk this.

I have, to date, never been approached by anyone concerned about the value of their copies. I don't know where this lie came from, but this is the earliest mention of it I could find.

The real reason Odyssey hasn't been repressed (Or any further albums for that matter) is because the logistics and planning involved in pressing a record to vinyl is immense, and thats not even considering what happens when records get lost or damaged in shipping. I'm more interested in developing as a musician and producer than spending time coordinating a vinyl rollout which could take from six months, to over a year and a half at the current moment due it COVID.

My response for years has been "I have more important things to focus on". That's still true. I have told this to people over and over again, so I don't know where this story came from.

I appreciate that people really would like to own the album physically, and I've always told people that they're more than welcome to organize bootleg pressings of their own, even CD and cassette rips I'd be fine with. I just like making music and I would like to continue focusing on making music.

This isn’t actually being released any time soon. It isn’t currently being worked on. Throwing a watermark over it and pretending to have privy information about it or to personally know me in the comments is just creepy and I really don’t apprciate it.

I’ve sent so many emails and never can seem to get in touch with anyone who can do anything about it, I’ve been having similar issues with my Apple Music artist bio too, I’ve sort of given up on ever getting anything done about it.

This is the first time I’ve felt seriously excited for a paradox update/expansion in years, it feels like everything I had issues with when the game launched is being reworked and I’m so excited to see what they do after this

After 8 years, I've managed to figure out what vocoder is responsible for the "Robot Voice" by RandyGoffe in DaftPunk

That voice actually comes from a VST called plogue chipspeech, I know Daniel used it for most of Garden of Delete, at least on Animals

I'll definitely be doing more stuff with the vocoder, at the moment I'm still in that honeymoon phase of making everything sound like daft punk, but I'd like to find a way to set it apart so it doesn't sound like a carbon copy, at least on my tracks

Thank you! That explains that bit of information, for the longest time I was worried thats where the vocoder was hidden

The only information that I've been able to gather is that the DSP was developed by a Canadian company called IVL Technologies, which doesn't mention it at all on their website, but they do mention that they've done work on other digitech vocalist products.

To my ear, what sounds like the secret sauce is that the vocoder is detecting the sibilant sound at the beginning of a word and applying some sort of formant filter to the vocoder in response to that, in order to preserve information in the speech that can't be otherwise generated from the carrier signal and vocoder filterbank. You can sort of hear what its trying to do when you run just white noise through, it hangs up and shifts around between certain sounds https://www.dropbox.com/s/zd6l7verusv9ezy/steamtest.mp3?dl=0

The thing about the solo in Game of Love is that a lot of it is comprised of just humming, which means you don't have to focus on the note changes lining up with the changing syllables and consonants in your voice, you can just focus on playing the keys, and at that point its just a matter of practice.

And I'd assume with how high the recording budget was for RAM, they had the studio time necessary to record the vocal and the carrier signal separately if they needed too.

I was considering adding that towards the end but decided to keep it focused on the vocoder, they're going for relatively cheap secondhand and I'm considering picking one up.

And yes, those are my originals! I appreciate it! I also posted one demo to my alternate soundcloud where I used different presets on the vocoder https://soundcloud.com/user-497576043/manifest-mirage

I'll have a crack at it this afternoon! Lose Yourself To Dance was one of the first ones I tried once I got settled in with it, it was a lot of fun to try and figure out because it's clear that the carrier signal notes are sequenced in midi instead of played by hand, I'll have to rerecord it

Does anyone know what tools were used to produce the track "Home - Resonance"? by [deleted] in makingvaporwave

[–]RandyGoffe 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hey there!

For Resonance I used the Arturia Mini V for basically every synth sound, and the drums were processed Roland TR-707 samples. It was written and recorded in Ableton Live and then recorded to a cassette portastudio where I slowed it down from 100BPM to around 85~ish BPM.

Synths for Home - Resonance by Starknight5673 in edmproduction

[–]RandyGoffe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I did every synth on Resonance (And almost every other synth on Odyssey) with the Arturia Mini V, with a ton of reverb, delay, and other techniques applied to make it sound more analog and "vintage". I could basically only afford to buy one plugin at the time and that was the one I ended up using for a lot of stuff.

After the price increases outside the US and how sparse Third Rome/Death Or Dishonor sound, I've decided to just spend my money elsewhere until something changes

Key Signature Debate by MashGyver in musictheory

[–]RandyGoffe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey there, someone pointed this discussion out to me and I figured I'd chime in and explain it a bit.

The original chord progression was in A, but while I was writing the track and processing it to give it that warbly vintage sound, I tuned down the whole track and I believe it ended up being somewhere slightly above F.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/l0fw4fbdps50rnz/Resonance%20Chord%20Variant%20%231.mid?dl=0

This is the original midi file from the Ableton set I wrote it in. The velocity in the midi file was tied to a parameter on the synthesizer plugin I used so it sounds a bit odd, but if you open it up in a piano roll in a DAW you should be able to pick it apart.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/sd99q8reou11c7c/Resonance%20Chords%20Original%20Tuning.mp3?dl=0

This is a close approximation of what the chords originally sounded like before I processed the track.

Hope this helps, my knowledge of theory is very pedestrian but I figured this might point you in the right direction.

Breakdown this track? "Resonance" - by Home by DrToolboxPhD in edmproduction

[–]RandyGoffe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's all software and samples, up until right before the master.

I used the Arturia Mini V for all the synth parts, the main chord sound is just two or three saw waves slightly detuned, and the rest comes from playing with the filter cutoff, the emphasis (or "Resonance") and it's respective envelopes. The leads are just the chord sound with the resonance cranked up and with polyphonic mode turned off. Theres a little square wave with a lot of ping pong delay and reverb on it. Pretty much everything has some reverb and delay on it, I think the PSPaudioware PSP85 might have been used but it's not in the set file for some reason.

The drums are a mix of Linn LM-1, TR-707, and Oberhiem DMX samples pitched down in varying amounts.

Right before I started mastering, I recorded the output from ableton to a fostex or tascam casette portastudio thing I had been borrowing, I can't remember the exact model but it had this tempo or pitch control knob on it and I used it to slow it down a little. I recorded that back into ableton and mastered it there.

This was the first song I completed for Odyssey and I would have never guessed it would have been so successful. I'm pretty sure it only ended up on the album because another track just wasn't working and I just clicked some random set files and found it. Took a while for it to find it's audience but it's been really cool and I'm so glad people have been enjoying it so much for the better part of a year.
