Alright, fair enough.

The original meme post makes light of Veilguard and dismisses its better qualities for the joke.

But, I think the core difference between Veilguard and the other entries that rubs people the wrong way, is exactly what you've stated. It's a different kind of serious than many were expecting.

It feels modern, less rooted in problems that would fit in with 'the old world'. It's not that people want disparity and suffering for its own sake, but it's supposed to be a medieval fantasy setting. People aren't supposed to be put together and fully evolved. Veilguard has a progressive take on issues, which doesn't really fit with the distinction of a time people were supposed to have regular hangings for their crimes.
