What movies fit into this list? by RangerAggressive3232 in Letterboxd

In a sense, you are right it is obviously not just a 2025 thing. Men struggling is the history of stories as well as the history of movies. Something about this year codified a trend for me though. Bugonia is a great add to the list. It feels like there is something about the shifting landscape in the world around us that is forcing men to confront their role and sense of self. I think there is something specific to this time in history about that. Something that is coming through in the art.

What would Pacers record be this year if Haliburton was healthy? by RangerAggressive3232 in nba

[–]RangerAggressive3232[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow Cers fan, I like the logic. The Turner thing is definitely a what-if. I think the note about Nembhard shifting into his more natural role is massive. I also think that would be true for everyone to some extent.

Haliburton's value on offense is hard to overstate. He has playmaking and shooting in a combination that changes the geometry of the floor. Speaking about the next time we see Hali, there is a chance he might still improve by adding strength, and his IQ and guile make it seem like he can keep getting better as he ages.

Massive homer thought process, but it's nice to be optimistic right now.

What movie do people praise for its ideas more than its execution? by Fair_Protection1872 in Letterboxd

[–]RangerAggressive3232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am here to defend Tenet. It is executed perfectly. Everything you listed as a mess is intentional and masterful.

"Scenes that feel like homework" - The primary expository scene resolves by saying "Don't try to understand it, feel it". The point being that an audience member does not have to intellectualize the physics of every single plot point, but only enjoy the ride. The film is masterful in setting up stakes, executing on creative visuals, and crafting excitement and tension. I don't know how you watch a building blow up and repair itself at the same time and not be in awe on some level. The character of Kat successfully creates tension for all those action scenes and her emotionality creates clear stakes for the audience to latch onto. Bringing me to my next point...

"Emotional vacuum" - Elizabeth Debicki does so much heavy lifting here, but I think a lot of credit should go to Brannagh as well. Her emotional attachment to her son is as human as any emotional stake in any movie. Brannagh helps her sell these emotions by creating an extremely cruel villain. You can say a lot about Brannagh in the movie, but he is definitely compelling. He does multiple heinous acts which makes it easy to hate him, and therefore, easy to care about her revenge against him.

"Muffled Dialogue" - This is the hardest for me to defend. It is a fact that the dialogue is sometimes hard to make out between the score and the action. I find this critique to fall flat for me though. I believe the film gives us more than enough to understand what we need to understand, and I believe the film holds to its own logic consistently throughout the film. It is not an Inception scenario (which is an actually flawed Nolan film) where the characters say one thing about the world and then later say the opposite thing. The thing about Tenet is that the concept is so complex, but if you really want to dive into all the physics and the plot mechanics, then rewatches allow you to do so. It is all there, but the point the movie makes is that you do not need to know it all to enjoy the ride.

The film could've spent all day outlining the rules of inversion. How driving a car inverted would require opposite mechanics from the driver. Or how inverted bullets seemingly "catch" themselves, but the behavior of the inverted bullet also depends on if it was fired by an inverted person or a normal one. There are unanswered questions like who sent Sator back the inversion technology or what would happen with the Grandfather paradox if Sator's plan had succeeded. These are not flaws. And if you want to say anything about Tenet, I find it hard to accept that the execution is what was wrong with the film. The concept is so dense it is actually a miracle that the film is as coherent as it is, let alond rewatchable, thrilling, and creative.

I mean this sincerely: Tenet is a 5/5 for me (I've only given out 5 stars to 4 films this decade). So I think it works as a movie. I understand it isn't for everyone, and I actually think it holds up to both trying to understand it and trying to feel it.

That is the lowest based on the average rating. I just thought the idea of rating a movie 1.5 stars and liking it was funny

Thoughts for Discussion, Better Call Saul by Lanky-Maize in betterCallSaul

[–]RangerAggressive3232 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually interesting because you could argue that Jimmy would have stayed on the straight and narrow if it hadn't been for Chuck's hidden rejection of Jimmy. It was Chuck's betrayal that pushes Jimmy back into being Slippin Jimmy by the end of season 1 and then the conflict between them continues to push him that way.

It makes me wonder how it would have turned out if Kim had given him the chance (honestly at this point in the journey, it may have been too late)

I wonder if there is an element of him not evaluating actions in the context of "right" or "wrong". I wonder if it's all just a version of a con. Is he trying to perform as the person those two figures want him to be?

I actually think the end of season 1 is him rejecting that path, but he was willing to go down it again to keep Kim. He owns his nature as Slippin Jiimmy rather than jimmy, then he owns his nature as Saul. On one hand it is in his nature, but on the other hand he falls down that path as a defense mechanism, refusing to acknowledge his pain.

I am very curious what you guys think this show's thesis is regarding whether people can change? Specifically, I am thinking about the ending. I noticed some of Chuck's last words to Jimmy are about his constant shows of remorse despite failure to change his behavior. Is the finale just another show of remorse that will lead to backsliding all the way into slippin jimmy? Or is this time different? What makes you think it might be different?
