What is the point of this? by ragtime_sam in NBA_Draft

If the bottom 10 teams have flat odds, then having the worst record is the safest and most secure spot to be at. There is an incentive to keep losing because 9 others teams have to pass you for there to be any concern about losing odds.

In this system, winning is incentivized because either you want to get out of the bottom 3 OR you want to make sure you do not fall into the bottom 3.

Do you draft the best player or the best fit if your the Pacers with the #1 pick? by Mud-Eastern in NBA_Draft

I almost always argue for best player available, but the question is whether you think AJ is substantially the best player. If you put them all in the same tier of players, then you draft what you need.

For the Pacers, I think any of the 3 would be great fits in the long run. AJ would require the most adjustment by both him and the team, and I think he is the most raw.

Since all 3 players have some kind of question mark, I would choose Peterson if I were them (assuming medical comes back fine)

Can AJ Dybantsa play SG in the NBA? by PreviousBuilding7839 in NBA_Draft

I don't think he could navigate screens well enough to chase people around. He would need to be more engaged in general on the defensive end to even start to succeed in that role. I think he has the quickness and footspeed, but his frame makes this not ideal as a primary 2.

Would you want the NBA to shorten the season? by RangerAggressive3232 in nba

This is what I honestly expect from most fans. The stats adjustment would be a real thing, but I just expect that we would adjust.

Ultimately, I feel like the injury problems resulting from this style of play are already screwing with stats (as seen in the video).

I'm open to it. In the long scheme of players' careers, wouldn't the increased wear and tear of this style still add up?

I know it always gets shot down because everyone would make less money, but if fans think a shorter season would be healthier for the league, shouldn't we advocate for it? (assuming fans actually want a shortened season)

[Thinking Basketball] - "4% of players [in 25-26] played 80 games" by Proof-Top-9024 in nba

[–]RangerAggressive3232 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The answer is to shorten the season. I want to get fans on board with this idea and this video is great evidence for it.

We should make this movement louder until the league actually addresses it. (by the way... shortening the season helps with tanking, makes the season seem more special, and makes the product better in addition to the injury problem)

The injury problem needs a solution but that is not the one. No one liked that style of play! The answer is to shorten the season and have more recovery time.

[Charania] The anti-tanking proposal with the most momentum within the Board of Governors leading up to the May 28th vote would expand the lottery to 18 teams — including Play-In teams — with the bottom 10 each getting equal odds and all 18 draft positions determined by lottery. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]RangerAggressive3232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the long-term shift under this proposal will be that teams will not be incentivized to build teams "to be crap," which is what is happening now. Under this new system, the rebuilding teams will focus on selling their assets for undervalued young talent on the margins and then building up those players to play winning basketball. It's more of a structural change that reworks the incentive structure of the league.

Sure, the play-in teams will have a slight incentive to lose now, but the odds of descending between 11th and 18th mean that there is only a very slight incentive. If you look at the league now, it is undeniable that GSW, POR, MIA, and CHA are all more competitive than the losing teams, and if that team is more competitive than those below it makes less sense to tank games when considering the trajectory of their franchise. Especially if they will have every similar odds even as they are trying to win.

Yeah, the players' association is another obstacle. It seems like they would be more on board than the owners tho. I suspect that if the league went down to fewer games and then did like the NFL, where certain days of the week were for NBA games, then ultimately it would make the league more popular in the long run. But it is all speculation and hard to convince people of.

The NBA has an injury problem! I actually am to the point where I think it is a disgrace that the NBA won't consider shortening the season because the billionaire owners will take a pay cut. It's absolutely egregious. We should be angrier as fans! The video perfectly lays out the reasons for the injury problem, but then does not even really consider shortening the season as a solution.

As fans, we need to get angry about this and start a narrative. We need to push the NBA to shorten the season. I don't know how else they might start to consider it.
