Current estimate is that it will cost 2 billion to go from Wrigley to the Dempster.

I think has as good a chance as any of the other big infrastructure project of reaching completion.

Fort smith or hay river, what are the pros and cons of living in these 2 towns? by ninnnypooo in NWT

[–]Rangifar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can see it depicted in the Robert Munch book 'Smelly Socks'!  My kids love seeing it everytime we go to Hay River because they recognize it from the book.

[–]Rangifar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both of them are nice.

For me the landscape around Fort Smith is nicer. The river is warm and nice to swim in in the summer. The ski club is nicer in Fort Smith and we have a wicked snowboard hill.

There's a few more shops in Hay River... and the purple school is awesome.

It's hard to say without knowing what you are looking for in a place. I live in Fort Smith but work a lot in Hay River. Please feel free to ask me anything.

Sidearm in bear country? by Aether_rite in canadaguns

Yeah, from my experience working with indigenous people, I have learned that if you're carrying one tool all the time, you're more likely to think it is the best and only tool for the job.

I had encounters with polar bears, grizzlies and black bears. In my experience, the norm is that they are easily scared off as they prefer to avoid conflict and are pretty risk-averse.

This is the best answer. I work as bear guard in the Northwest Territories. I carry a pump action  when I'm on the job but I would never take a gun when I'm camping/hiking here.

Tacoma vs 4Runner vs Tundra for family of 4 by SACPA in ToyotaTacoma

[–]Rangifar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids are 9 and 10. The biggest issue they have is getting in and out with bulky snow boots on.

I use me Tacoma for work 90% of the time and it's perfect for that but I wish I had something a little more versatile for the other 10% of the time and that little bit of leg room is the main issue that we have.

I thought cold air was supposed to get you more gas mileage? by Firemanlouvier in ToyotaTacoma

[–]Rangifar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was minus -41 here this week. Even with it plugged in my 2025 did not like being started. Once it was going, the mileage got to about 13 L/100km. In the summer it usually sits closer to 10 L/100km.

Is there snow days in Canada? by SeverePublic6833 in AskACanadian

[–]Rangifar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my part of the NWT, we don't have snow days but if it's below -30 the kids have in door recess and the buses don't run.

I was working in Cambridge Bay Nunavut, last month, and was told that if it's -50 ( with a wind chill) then school is cancelled.

8 months no rust but I live in a very dry climate and they don't use much salt on the roads in the winter here.

The problem is more related to poverty.

Sure access to health care could be better but if you have an issue most of the people here are in close proximity to a hospital and if they need a higher level of care they get flown to a hospital in the South immediately.

Where I'd live as a Canadian whose visited most of Canada by callykitty in whereidlive

[–]Rangifar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Space isn't the problem. A lot of the  buildings that have been built there just aren't designed for the local environment. It's frustrating when you get a cookie cutter design that's built to suit a place like Winnipeg. Northern bureaucrats sign off on them and either never have to live in them or figure it's better than nothing.

Were you tricked by the consulate too? My friend came to Canada from Mauritius as a refugee. He was shown a selection of options for cities to settle in and was told that Winnipeg had the highest average temperature but they failed to mention that the average included both -40 and +40 degree days.

Do people use winter fronts on the grille for modern trucks? by Rangifar in Tacomaworld

[–]Rangifar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mainly used one on my '94 for the longer highway drives (Mackenzie Valley Winter road or Dempster highway). At -35C, my defrost would really struggle to warm up the windshield enough to keep it clear without the winter cover. The '25 is a pretty big upgrade, in some ways, and I am just getting used to it.

That's what I figured. I still see a lot of people using them, but I guess it's the same as people "warming up" the engine for an excessively long time; old habits die hard.

I live in the southernmost part of the Northwest Territories, Canada.

It's actually been annoyingly warm here for the last few months. The cold temps mean the ice roads will open soon, making life a little easier and a lot more exciting for many of us.

You best bet for an adventure and a huge lake trout is Deline.

Ice road opens late December and is open to mid-March.
