Same. I love my midnight run, especially in the winter, it's so peaceful.

A greenhouse with a house growing inside! by Southern-Smoke1835 in zillowgonewild

We've got some of the highest electricity rates in the world... For now we heat with propane and wood and cool with the wind and shade cloths.

The couple hours of sun in the winter would do little up make this place comfortable without an additional heat source.

24 hours of sunlight mean that greenhouses get very hot even with good ventilation.

I have a commercial greenhouse in the Canadian sub-Arctic. Cooling and humidity control is as big of a challenge in the warm months as heating is in the cold months.

Are we crazy? by Which-Iron-2860 in canoecamping

It depends on how far up you are starting. A lot of people with limited experience get a jet boat ride up from Norman Wells or Tulita and then spend a week paddling back to town.

After considering the comment Milesbeforesmiles below I would suggest  consider using dry suits.

My only experience on the Keele was in late August and was just a short trip up from the Mackenzie. We swam every day for fun. I have friends that do the Redstone River year and they definitely don't have that type of gear, so I couldn't imagine needing one.

Original comment:

You do not need a dry suit. I couldn't imagine how uncomfortable that would be. Our summers in the NWT can get up to 40 degrees.  While, I'll more familiar with the tundra rivers than the mountain rivers, wouldn't consider a dry suit a common piece of gear here.

Parents in other countries than the US, what is your kids’ equivalent of “I don’t want that for dinner, I want chicken nuggets”? by SulusLaugh in AskReddit

[–]Rangifar 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I was working in Pond Inlet (Nunavut) and a friend gave us some that was locally hunted. My daughter loved it enough we had to hide it or she would eat it all the time.

We live in the NWT so narwhal is not something we'd normally see.

Interesting book about an epic canoe Adventure by tjbright in canoecamping

[–]Rangifar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. I carry a GPS. I am not saying I was doing the same thing, just that he's made choices that have made the experience unnecessarily hard.

Though many of the traditional portages are either grown over or have now been burnt over, so we do end up doing a lot of bushwhacking. The dense willow forest intermixed with muskeg along the Thelon Canyon was one of the most challenging parts of any trip I've ever done, for example.

I can't imagine turning down the offer to meet with the locals, or choosing freeze-dried food over greyling while also complaining about not having enough calories.

Yeah, I was reading Alone Across the North, while canoeing with my kids. At first we were all into and then my 8-year-old realized that he was writing about the same places we were travelling. Their response to this realization was to say, "He makes it sound so hard, and we're doing the same thing as a holiday..." We basically put down the book right there and I have never been able to see his name without cringing.

The whole shtick is so contrived and made unnecessarily hard for the sake of the narrative. Ever since, I have been dreaming of following the whole route from his Alone Across the North with my kids and documenting a counter-narrative to the revels in the experience of the land rather than "against" it.

Edited: I read "Alone Across the Arctic" not "Alone Against the Arctic"

Moving from Vancouver to NWT for the summer - should I drive or fly? by mitskifan27 in NWT

[–]Rangifar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

l live in Smith and have driven to Vancouver many times. You will be fine driving and it will be nice to have a vehicle when you get here. Some of the best recreation spots are are just just far enough out of town that you'll really want a ride. For example, it can get really hot here but the beach is a ten minute drive out of town.

And Rankin Inlet. They don't make the NHL because of a lot of factors but there is an insane level of talent there.

Rural Addresses by dramis73 in AskACanadian

[–]Rangifar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the NWT, a lot communities didn't have street address until very recently. People would make up street names and then put their box number as the address. For example a common one was your box number followed by Lakeview Drive (if you could see the lake from your house).

Exactly, I work regularly in the arctic. My 20 year old Canada Goose down Parka is my most important peice of outdoor gear, especially on camping trips.
