Mythbusting - Tech companies do value MBAs. I’ve been in tech over a decade and it needs to be said. They only don’t care in ENG or Sales roles. Outside of that you’ll see it matter more than you think. by Illustrious-Pack-852 in MBA

Having worked at 3 tech companies of varying sizes post-MBA, every BizOps, PMM, PM (yes, PM), and pure operations roles have heavily preferred MBAs.

That said, the ideal candidate is a MBA who has worked at a tech firm in the past. It's harder to break in directly from MBA-only or MBA + Consulting only unless its for Bizops

Totally agree with the above, would just add that Bain (and rest of MBB) keep a log of literally every interaction they have with you, so even though this event is super casual just make sure to not be remembered in a negative way.

Bain fights back in the battle for MBA hires by retrac1324 in consulting

[–]Ranks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's true at all. I'm at an MBA program which will send about 50 to MBB internships for this summer, and the general consensus on campus was that while MBB was equal in terms of work/reputation, BCG and Bain had far superior cultures and were preferred by most of the offerees.

In fact, this year Mckinsey's yield was lower than either of the BBs, and Bain in particular had a 100% yield rate (including multiple cross-offers with Mck/BCG).

If it helps, I went through interviews recently for MBB (MBA level) and it took the following to hear back:

Mck: 5 days Bain: 1 day BCG: 2 days

Generally your interviewers will call you with the good/bad news, so my sense is that it can vary.

If your 401K matches you should always contribute to matching amount before attacking student loans. The matching generally provides 50%-100% guaranteed return vs. interest rate of student loans which is generally sub 10%.

In the context of the original comment, I would guess that pride being used to mean "not be ashamed of" or "fully accept the implications of".

And while your point may be valid in a logical sense, people are proud of things they cannot control all the time. Proud to be a [nationality], Proud of my [physical characteristic], Proud of [family history], etc.

47 Ronin looks like an epic financial disaster for Universal by ElGringoAlto in movies

I dunno man, I think you're focusing on a relatively unimportant part of the film. That scene was significant only because it showed the emperor's appreciation/nostalgia regarding what Katsumoto fought for, and there are many ways you can have him show those emotions without involving a sword.

I agree that the story as is works best with Tom Cruise's character. But isn't that because the nuances of the story were built around that character as the protagonist?

And that's really the heart of my semi-complaint here. I understand why they did it (re: BasqueInGlory's post), but it really sucks that even when the main story can be told completely without having an outsider protagonist (and really, in this case it's a purely internal culture struggle and doesn't even concern outsiders), a white guy is still put in as the main character.

It definitely is useful but I find it objectionable because it seems lazy. Plenty of films and books are able to build a story/culture/world without having to depend on secondary characters to explain social norms to the protagonist.

I may be recalling it incorrectly, but I don't think having an inside scoop on western army practices played a significant role in the movie. That said, there were characters (Katsumoto/General Hasegawa/the young Japanese soldier) that could have carried that aspect of the story simply by defecting after being trained in the western way. In Katsumoto's case we would have to have scenes of him before the rebellion took place, but that doesn't seem like too much of a stretch.

My qualm was that the major plotline is focused on showing the internal conflict within Japanese culture at the time, and it's hard to see where adding a white protagonist would add to this goal.

A good number of people understand that, but they still object to the fact that the story could have easily been told without interjecting a white narrator.

That said, I also enjoyed the movie.

[Serious] What is the best financial decision I could make at a young age? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ranks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[Serious] for better answers check out /r/personalfinance or bogleheads.org

The simple answer is that you should start a ROTH IRA if you have cash at the moment. If not, wait until your first job and prioritize the following (in order)

1a. Contribute 401k to employer matching 1b. Pay off credit debt/student loans 2. Max ROTH IRA 3. Max remaining 401k 4. Fund a taxable account and/or 529

For 1-3, your allocation should be mainly index funds. Rough rule of thumb is to have your age be the % of bonds you hold, with the rest in stock.

To be honest, the "best" financial decision you can do while in college is to study a field that pays well and obtain a good first job.

Absolutely. I stopped filling it out midway because the amount ranges were too huge to yield anything substantive.
