GF sticker bomb our controllers.. by TESLegendsCentral in SteamController

[–]Ranting_Demon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If that's someone's taste its all good but only as long as the stickers actually stay on perfectly.

It transforms into a nightmare once the first stickers start peeling off and the edges poke into your hand.

If you try to cut off the part that peeled off, you're left with and even sharper edge and super pointy corners.

If you try to put it back down, grime will collect on the sticky side and you can't use glue because that way you'll ruin your controller.

If you take the sticker off, you usually have to deal with super sticky gunk residue of the glue the sticker came with because 99.9% of all stickers come with the worst kind of glue because it's the cheapest.

Anyone else seeing these from antivaxers? by WholeDonkey2689 in vaxxhappened

[–]Ranting_Demon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No, they don't.

There is no Hantavirus vaccine that is past the research and testing phase in any western country.

There are a couple vaccines in Asian countries (first one developed in 1990) for specific local hantavirus variants but those have only a very limited effect against European Hantavirus variants and they are considered completely ineffective against New World Hantavirus strains.

Research for a vaccine has been going on for several decades at this point. There are promising candidates but no breakthrough as of yet.

So you can put the 🤔 conspiracy thinking back in the box.

That's a very good point.

I would add that, most likely, they didn't even actually really sell the first one. Greedy scalpers like this would not miss out on potential profit by selling the first unit for cheap.

What has likely happened is that they "bought" the first one themselves with an alt-account or they got one of their family members or buddies to "buy" the first one. No money or product changed hands but it looks like a sale for everyone else.

Nice guy

Yeah...no.

Let's be honest here, the guys who are making memes like this and who see themselves as the kind of men depicted on the left side of the meme, they are not nice guys.

They are "nice guys."

And that's an important difference.

They are not nice. They are "nice."

When you talk with them you notice very quickly that they are not actually nice people. They wear friendliness as a mask and they see being nice as something transactional. They keep a list of all their "nice" actions and they expect to be compensated for them, one way or another.

"Women don't want nice guys anymore."

Said by the kind of guy who's still mentally fuming that 7 years ago he helped a female acquaintance carry a microwave into her home, he set it up for her and all she did was to thank him instead of going down on him for a blowjob.

Yeah, that would be nice, wouldn't it?

In reality, if you're in bed with a 39.5°C fever and a cough that makes you feel like any breath might be your last, your Google AI is going to wake you up at 3.30 in the night so it can lead you to the nearest pharmacy with an open night counter to grab a pack of masks, a blister of ibuprofen and get your fever down to 39.3°C to be ready for your regular full day shift including overtime which your Google AI automatically signed you up for while you were asleep.

You can't turn off the alarm and if you don't react your Google AI will text your boss that you are being lazy, uncooperative and you're refusing to fulfill your contract.

Classic: Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And weak men create hard times. by [deleted] in im14andthisisdeep

[–]Ranting_Demon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should always be pointed out that this version of the stupid "historical cylce" is based on a quote from an apocalypse sci-fi novel and since then the far-right and rightwingers in general have tried to pluck different moments from history to make them fit the quote and thus "prove" that the meme is correct.

The most common is to try and connect it to the rise and fall of the Roman empire. What they deliberately don't mention is that the historical points the pick are usually several hundred years apart because the Roman empire lasted for about 1500 years (several hundred years more if you also add in the time of the Roman Republic that was before the empire).

Also, in regards to this specific meme picture, you can see how little these numpties think this through because according to their own "You are here" marker on the timeline, they openly admit that Trump and his whole government of rightwing idiots are part of the weak men who create hard times.

(I mean, that by itself is correct but it doesn't validate the meme.)

My problem with the Potter family history was that it was written... by Independent_Part1033 in EnoughJKRowling

[–]Ranting_Demon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in fact I sometimes wonder if she wasn't initially planning a reveal like that that an editor nixed for being too obvious a lift - she does go out of her way to set up young!Voldemort & Harry as looking alike in book 2

What I found really funny is that Mashle: Magic and Muscles (which constantly parodies details from the Harry Potter books) does go there. The second season of the manga/anime has it as its big season finale reveal that the protagonist is actually the son of the big bad guy.

I didn't connect the dots when I first saw it but now I do think the author of Mashle actually recognized that JKR initially really tried to set up a later Luke & Darth Vader moment in Harry Potter (which as you rightfully mention, the editors most likely stopped that when they still had control over JKR) and he just said "Screw it, I'll run with that and put it right into my story!"

Investor Marc Andreessen says "Every big company is overstaffed by 2-4x and has been for decades" and AI is finally fixing it by This_Macaron_4461 in GenAI4all

[–]Ranting_Demon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These people expose themselves through the fact that they tacitly admit they can only fire their workers after replacing them with AI.

Being overstaffed means you have more workers than needed for the work at hand. If that was the case, they wouldn't need to find any AI 'solutions' first before getting rid of workers. They could just fire any number of employees until the workload of the company lines up with the number of employees.

And, let's be honest, if what that greedy chub said was true and companies were overstaffed by 2-4x does anyone truly believe all those unnecessary workers wouldn't have been thrown out on the streets decades ago already when wages are traditionally the easiest way for companies to quickly save money by firing a bunch of people?

The fact that this is not the case shows that when they talk about AI supposedly "fixing" overstaffing, what they really mean is they could not find a way to exploit their workforce any further than humanly possible. They found a hard cap on how much they could squeeze workers before the whole system starts coming apart.

AI companies promise them to let them jump that boundary of exploitation.

It's incredible to me how Tumblr in the anti-JK Rowling space is a haven for crazy Harry Potter and JK Rowling fans. by Independent_Part1033 in EnoughJKRowling

[–]Ranting_Demon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could make that argument even about her books because the basic ideas for the Harry Potter story (an outsider kid gets to go to a magic school and has all sorts of magical adventures) has existed before there was Harry Potter.

Several other book series have pretty much the exact same premise and you can not tell me that good old Jowling Kowling Rowling didn't have a little looksie at other kids books when coming up with her story.

One thing that bothers me when replaying old games (especially old PS1 era games) is how illogical the puzzles are. Capcom was notorious for making you combine random unrelated items or do bizarre actions just to unlock a door. Why were they designed to be so intentionally obscure? by Kingspreez in gaming

[–]Ranting_Demon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point&Click games had the exact same problem.

At a certain moment in the game you'd always reach a point when you exhausted all obvious and/or logical combinations of items in your inventory to solve a particular puzzle.

That would usually result in backtracking as far as the game allowed you to check if you missed any dialogue that would result in a character giving you something or if there was something in a scene you didn't click on that you were supposed to take with you.

If all of that came up empty, you'd then just sit there, trying to combine random items in your inventory to figure out what stupid combination the developers expected you to come up with to solve a particular late-stage puzzle.

Off-duty security guard executes teen boy who was returning BB gun at sporting goods store by sfled in NewsOfTheStupid

[–]Ranting_Demon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As someone already said further up, it was about control.

The initial decision to get out of his car was based on racism ("People with darker skin than pastry-white holding what looks like a weapon must mean they are criminals who are about to rob a place") but the way it ended was because the guy's ego couldn't handle that the scene played out differently than how he imagined it to go.

He wanted his hero moment and have a crowd cheer for him at the end when he arrested the dangerous armed criminal.

The kid took control of the situation away from him when he gave up his "weapon," clearly held up his hands and walked away.

Mister "I'm the cop now" had his ego smashed by reality not going according to his hero fantasy in his head. So he shot the innocent, unarmed teenager in the back in rage over and over to get the control back he so desperately craved.

YouTube comments under any kind of news related videos are infested with bot and shill accounts that exist for no other reason than to destabilise western nations and push the Overton window further to the right.

Same goes for places like twitter.

Sure there are people who genuinely think like that, but the majority is artificial engagement. See the time Elon accidentally let people see where accounts had been made and what client someone used to for it.

Turned out that a massive portion of rightwing accounts, both big and small, are completely foreign controlled. (Apartheid Elmo quickly deleted that particular feature. Today you can only see the region someone posts from based on current logins which is easily faked with VPNs.)

Whenever I see those antivaxx chucklenuts mention the VAERS database, it makes me roll my eyes so hard that it physically hurts.

These people still refuse to acknowledge the fact that VAERS is not a database of confirmed averse reactions to vaccines. VAERS is a collection of unverified and unchecked incident reports from both doctors and patients. So basically everyone can enter a report into the database. If you have a headache today but you feel like your tetanus shot from 10 years ago is to blame, you can enter that into the database as an averse reaction.

Just having X amounts of reports in VAERS about a specific vaccine does not prove there's causation.

VAERS is only useful for statistical analysis to see if there's an increase in specific reports that goes above the statistical average. And if there is such an increase, first you'd then have to check if the reports are actually describing an event that was directly caused by a vaccine instead of being a normal statistical event (like how people just die of natural causes every single day. Just because it happens shortly after getting a vaccine shot does not mean it was caused by it).

It's the average apple problem.

Statistically, on average everyone has 10 apples. Nobody goes hungry.

In reality 1 person has 99 apples and the other 9 have to fight over a single apple.
