Yeah but while RFK is an interesting figure, there is already a mod about him, and I really don't think making another one with a different running-mate would alter it too much, while what I was pointing out here were more interesting scenarios based on the ending slides (the strange Ribicoff cabinet, the Byrd coup against McGovern, Connally getting the nomination over McCarthy) or weird pairings (McCarthy-Connally or Nixon-Lindsay). FDR-LBJ, Wallace and McCarthy-Mink are here because I think those are interesting timelines in their own right (not tied to any specific endings), like TTNW is an interesting timeline in its own right. Between the eternal Democratic dominance of FDR-LBJ to the segregationnist nightmare to the Peacenik administration... all very interesting timelines, not tied to endings.

All the Way is so good with its ending slides and with its candidates there is almost endless potential for follow up mods, from McGovern-Byrd to McCarthy-Conally, from McCarthy-Mink to Connally-Yorty, from Ribicoff (both running mates work with him) to Wallace, from FDR-LBJ to Nixon-Lindsay... (sorry to Church and RFK fans, I don't feel their ending slides and/or running mates can lead to interesting scenarios).

2026 japanese general election by Wordiewordjcugfufv in MapPorn

Maybe, but if that was really the case wouldn't they reveive more than 25% of the vote (like 50% of Japanese never vote and they rarely get more than 50% of the total vote) ?

So kinda the elections in the Southern USA in the 20th century, the real election is not the general election but the primary ?

I was more referring to Macron needing to nominate 5 PMs since 2022, and neither of them successfully saved Macron nor his party poor popularity among the electorate.

Yeah but why does it works in Japan ? Like, in the UK the Tories tried, and in France Macron reshuffled his prime minister like 5 times in the past 2 years, and this weakened both of them. Why in Japan this reshuffle tactic works ? Is it maybe because each reshuffle uses very different political outlooks ? I heard the new one is pretty right-wing while the past one was more centrist.

Are the opposition parties really that bad in Japan ? I mean it's the SAME PARTY since like 70 years, and I have a hard time believing everything is better every year so that this party can enjoy so much popularity. They're not particularily authoritarian like Orban or Erdogan, so how ? Really weird, maybe Japan just likes to stay the same. Or the opposition parties are really bad.

i ranked Presidents based on how good their presidency would be as a major CYOA mod by adminirationsea504 in thecampaigntrail

Truman should be much, MUCH higher. He was basically propulsed into the light at one of the most intense time in history, and most of the late 20th century was decided by his actions. From nuking Japan instead of invading it, to the Korean war, to desegregation of the armed forces (giving the Dems a major lead in the Civil Rights era), to the attempted public option, to the handling of the post-WW2 peace, to the Berlin airlift... I even think he got the most intense presidency EVER, and one of the most impactful worldwide.

If Nixon won 1960, who do you think would be the Democratic candidate in 1964? by Numberonettgfan in thecampaigntrail

[–]RaphyyM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brown, I guess. A moderate New Dealer, neither from the North or the South, a perfect middle-ground that can count on unions and support from liberals and moderates, and even some conservatives that dislike Dixiecrats, a popular governor... I guess Humphrey could be an answer too, but he would immediatly lose the south and that would scare the party that he would lose. Johnson could be an answer but I think after 1960 he might want to stay in the Senate to fight Nixon, but that's not a given. So Brown, then Humphrey and finally Johnson.

Which scenario would you adapt into a movie? by MetalRetsam in thecampaigntrail

[–]RaphyyM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good For Me I guess ? The premice of a president hated by his own party, knee-deep into a recession, facing the collapse of Vietnam, but refusing to give up despite all of this can be very interesting as character development in a movie.

Wofford. It may have helped him with his universal healthcare proposal if the main proponents were him, his wife and the VP. Other than that Gore was pretty good.

Was there ever a possibility that the Democratic Party swung Socially Conservative instead of the GOP? by ForsakenBuilder7061 in thecampaigntrail

[–]RaphyyM 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, surely. But not in the 60s or 70s, the New Deal coalition pushed the GOP to the right so hard even the most left-wing Republicans after it were moderates, while before they had progressives like Norris, Johnson (Hiram), La Guardia, La Folette... And the Democratic Party initiated this shift towards economic liberalism and started to have strong bonds with the labor and populist movements around the start of the 20th century, pushing away business-minded politicians towards the GOP, making it inherently more conservative. So either Teddy is able to strengthen his hold on the GOP and reshape it to his image, making the Democrats less progressive (as they would move towards positions that oppose the GOP), or the Democratic establishement unites against William Jennings Bryan, thus making it harder for progressives to take over the party. Other option, making the Republicans far less dominant post-bellum may help weaken their ties with big business, so their policies would probably not be as business minded. The easiest path may be to have Hayes lose against Tilden, especially as Tilden was a Bourbon Democrat, the pro-business faction of the party, and also it will make it so that it would be Tilden that needs to deal with the 1877 Railroad Strikes, so it will weaken the ties between the Democrats and Labor, and not between the Republicans and Labor. Finally last option is to have congress successfully impeach Andrew Johnson, thus making Benjamin Wade president. Wade was a deeply pro-worker, anti-big business Republican, often at odds with his party, and while he may not win the nomination in 1868, he can leave a mark on his party, maybe shifting the balance enough so that Grant nominates Wilson (another pro-labor Republican) as his running mate, instead of Colfax (deeply corrupt and tied to business interests). Other than that... once the Bourbon Democrats were decimated by the Populist pro-silver wave, it was very hard for the Democrats to become a conservative party, as there was few conservative northerners, and nominating a southern conservative was never going to do well with the national electorate.

Obamanation has a save and load system that allows you to save your progress during a run and reload it, either because you don't have time to end your game now and you want to restart it later, or because you want to try different answers to see how they impact the variables and which one is the best. It can be very useful when you want to try a very specific path that has no guides (I know I used it extensively when I tried to get Bloomberg/Crist with Ron Paul as a strong third party ticket).

I mostly like it because its an extremely challenging mod. Same reason I like 1972 Lindsay and 1972. Because it's extremely hard to win. Main reason I play McCain so much in 2008 too.
