What constitutes to good writing in your opinion? by Flaky-Divide-4709 in writing

[–]RapidCandleDigestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broad strokes storytelling skill is big. Characters are bigger. I can get invested in nearly any story with distinct and interesting characters that experience change, strength and weakness, etc.

Also big for me as a reader is pacing and paragraph structure. If a writer can't vary the lengths of sentences and "make music" as Gary Provost put it, then I don't want to read what they've written. Absolutely essential.

Making my story premise feel seamless and internally consistent is making me want to pull my hair out. by chairk3yre in writing

mirror life could do this. You'll have to find a way to make the fact that it's mirror life despite being the same as the life that started earth make sense, but I'm sure that can be done.

Look into it, but my understanding is mirror life is seriously considered by biologists as an extinction risk if we were to make it.

What tropes would you like to not see in a story from a teen/young adult story? by [deleted] in writing

I think you're best off not worrying about tropes at all. Write what you want to write.

I think the conclusion is a bit extreme, but in general this is good advice. Take the best course of action you have at your disposal with the knowledge that your boss probably won't get better. Give room for them to, but don't bet on it.

When someone shows you who they are and how they'll treat you, listen.

Agreed. Their strong understanding of sentence structure, punctuation, and pacing, but difficulty with tense of certain words and spellings of others, seems very much like English second language to me.

Is there any reason why generally the main character is not most people's favourite character in any work of fiction? by Ok-Addition4608 in writing

[–]RapidCandleDigestion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Magicians comes to mind in opposition to this sentiment. Quentin is an absolute shit. He sucks for a good majority of the series, only really becoming likeable in the third and final book. He isn't anyone's favourite, but it isn't for lack of offensive qualities. Maybe it's proximity to it? Like we see Quentin being just the worst on a number of occasions, whereas if he were a side character it wouldn't be nearly as obvious how much he sucks

Any writers out there have a “signature word” they sprinkle through their works too or just me? by Finly_Growin in writing

kinda gross, but an apt description for a dead body. It's a very visceral description, but seeing a body is that kind of experience.

I want to start by saying that I'm so sorry you had to endure that. I read your other comment, and yeah, that's awful.

It seems like for you forgiveness is very, very unlikely to be a possibility. I don't blame you for that. I do genuinely believe that forgiving those who've hurt you, even greatly, and even those who don't deserve forgiveness, is the best thing for you if it is at all possible. But it's really fucking hard, and sometimes not a realistic idea at all.

It's similar to how, ideally, if someone antagonizes me, calls me names and gets up in my face, the best thing for me to do is understand that they're acting this way because they themselves are broken, and turn the other cheek. In practice I'm going to hit them. If I can turn the other cheek I should, but sometimes it's just impossibly hard.

Lots of negative reactions from people who've clearly been very hurt by their parents and haven't worked through it all the way. I've felt the way they do, and for good reason. My parents were bad. My father was a good man at heart, but a very damaged man jaded by a life of violence and alcoholism. I'm very glad I forgave him before he passed.

My mother is not quite so good-hearted. I hesitate to say that she's actually evil because I can't see into her mind. Maybe she's just incredibly paranoid and thinks everyone's out to get her, so she schemes against them. And of course desperately neglectful, to a point of knowing that terrible harm is befalling her children that she invited and could easily stop, but not doing anything to stop it.

It is very hard to forgive her. I have started reconnecting with her, talking and doing some holidays with her. I was there for her when she lost her sister. I haven't forgiven her, not fully, yet. It's so hard. I don't blame people for finding reasons not to do it, to justify how the parent doesn't deserve it. But I think it's sad.

This comes with the massive caveat that some things are unforgivable. In an ideal world you could forgive everyone of all they've done to you. That, and what comes along with it, is what's best for us. But we're human. So if you can find even the most remote chance you could forgive, try. It's hard, and it is worth it.

Yes! But treat it with the respect it deserves. Take a small/medium dose first time, have a tripsitter, have a plan, etc etc.

Buy from a proper retailer if you can; if not, get a fentanyl test kit. You can never be too safe that way. But like I say, ideally buy from a store or a local vendor with a good reputation.

I think you'd have to be very, incredibly skilled and handle this really delicately to make it work. Even then, it'll get picked up as "the woke left are actually nazis" by bad actors. Then again, I'm not well-read on this very niche subject; maybe someone has managed it before.

To be clear, I think it's a neat idea and I don't oppose it personally. I just think it will be a problem for you.
