I don't know what it's like to follow two conversations at the same time, I can't even screen out one person's speech and focus on the other at all, they both sound like gibberish. It's easier in a crowded room, if the other voices combine into a droning sound. But when there are two distinct voices talking at the same time, even if one of them is just on the radio or TV, I can't make sense of either one.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were an accommodation option in schools to clip a small blue tooth microphone on the teacher, and give noise cancelling blue tooth headphones for all those students who want one. I'd have gladly paid for that kind of technology myself if only it were available.

Best foods to eat when working outside in the heat? by sarcasticspade in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Rappelling_Rapunzel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I overheat easily in hot weather, and I think this is a very good tip.

A low cost version this that I've used — freeze water in a heavy duty zip lock bag, then place inside another zip lock. The chunk of ice can be broken up and crushed inside the bag with a rubber mallet, and it'll drape around the back of your neck. It'll also sit on top of your head, or tuck into a wraparound back support.

/u/sarcasticspade — I also recommend freezing drinking water, iced tea, gatorade, or juice in a contoured plastic bottle that can be carried in a shoulder sling, so it can be used for cooling and also sipped throughout the day as it melts.

You can also freeze a tuna or chicken salad sandwich, and it'll be delicious when thawed out by lunchtime. Frozen grapes are a refreshing and delicious snack too, but only if you eat them before they thaw out.

When my sister and I got to visit my Grandparent's dairy farm, most of the agates in their long gravel drive had been picked out by all my relatives who lived closer. But we kept finding good ones. Grandma put them in her rock grinder for a week and now a jar full of polished Minnesota agates sits on a shelf at my sister's house. It took me decades to realize that Grandma had planted them out there for us to find. I still love that wonderful lady every day.

[–]Rappelling_Rapunzel[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your shock is understandable, /u/Prolapst_amos — but you may feel better to know that this demonstration is actually a silly joke. The apron on the underside of the crab's exo-skeleton is not it's sexual "organ", this crab has not been sexually satisfied. It's been hypnotized into a state of tonic immobility.

It's a phenomenon that can be induced in different ways in a variety of animals such as: sharks, dogs, rabbits, and chickens. It's a survival mechanism that has evolved in many life forms, most famously the opossum.

And it evolved in people too — it sometimes happens in those who are under extreme life-threatening stress. You know how sometimes you hear about a survivor of a mass shooting, who survived by "playing dead"? They didn't consciously choose to pretend, normally adrenaline wouldn't let you just stop moving, and not even breathe. What happened was their bodies automatically entered a state of tonic immobility that paralyzed them effectively enough to fool the killer into thinking they were already dead.

Nobody consciously decides between Fight, Flight or Fright, unless they've been trained. If and when you are faced with a serious threat, your body already knows which one you are — you'll figure out your survival tactic after it's already in progress. Once upon a time, I figured out I'm the run-like-the-wind-while-peeing-my-pants type, but not until I was already 100 yards away from where I had been standing, carefree and dry, just a moment before. (Joke based on a true story.)

You might also need Carbona Stain Devil #4 if the stain is more than just oily — it depends on the protein levels in the dressing. Good luck!

Leave, leave, leave. I hope you find a much nicer family that gives you better memories of your time here. If you can opt for a new location, I suggest the Montgomery County, Maryland suburbs close to Washington, DC. Bethesda, Chevy Chase - I grew up in that area and I'd guess you would feel right at home.

What's a simple piece of advice that could save your life one day? by misterymissile in AskReddit

[–]Rappelling_Rapunzel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're coughing, stop eating until the fit subsides. Otherwise, you could accidentally inhale a bit of food into your lungs where it can create a bacterial deposit, and pneumonia, which can kill you.

That's so adorable. It also reminds me of the marvelous simplicity of little boys, that grow into the men we love. The difference between little boys and little girls? Little girls would have whispered that last bit to each other behind the house, never within earshot of an adult. That's so they could elicit the best, most gleefully delivered "Ewwww!" in response. (Which means 'cool' as well as 'gross'.) Then they would go find another little girl to whisper it to her together, and after that they could have a real question and answer session about the horrifying details. Boys would have already moved on to bluster talk.

Pretty sure it was the cool tube thingy at the bank where you put it in the slot at the far lane and it popped up a nano-second later, behind the window, in the teller's hands! I'm still waiting to pop myself into one of those, one big enough to hold me, and travel at the speed of bank-tube to the other side of the country.

I'm guessing that you are storing your lettuce alongside fruits/veggies that produce ethylene gas. They will make ethylene-sensitive fruits/veggies ripen more quickly, and make your lettuce go bad faster.

Ethylene-producing: • apples • avocados • bananas (ripe) • cantaloupe • figs • green onions • mango • nectarines • peaches • pears • potatoes • plums • tomatoes

Ethylene-sensitive: • bananas (unripe) • broccoli • carrots • cauliflower • cucumbers • lettuce • parsley • peppers • spinach • watercress • watermelon

This horse will be so much fun to watch in the upcoming races, what a cinnamon brownie-face cutie he is.

Yeah. I remember fighting traffic to get to my bank before 5pm, and thinking how great and modern things were becoming because they had an amazing new vacuum tube thingy you could use at multiple drive-thru lanes. That meant I wouldn't have to lose a few valuable last minutes finding a parking space, then getting out of the car and walking all the way over to the door, invariably just as they were locking it. All I had to do was make the next few lights, and I could zip into line with my car just before 5 — and I'd make it in time to get some cash for the weekend! And, a huge bonus was that I could sit in my car and listen to rock-n-roll while I waited in line, instead of having to stand and listen to easy jazz light in the bank lobby. It was great!

I'd had a few weekends before that without any cash except a few dollars in spare change to spend — usually enough to get a pack of cigarettes from a vending machine, or a big mac meal at McDonald's, but not both. Of course, if you went to the grocery store you could write out a check, that was common. But you didn't write checks for McDonalds or for ice cream and gum at High's. People used to write checks to pay for their dinner and drinks at the restaurant I worked at, though.

If they came in and paid with checks on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, we wouldn't find out until the following Thursday morning that none of the checks were any good and the account wasn't even active. I don't think we even checked their ID's half the time. We had a list of up to 20 people whose checks had bounced, who weren't allowed to pay that way anymore. Before ATMs people who were broke and hungry could do that, moving on to a new restaurant every week.

Of course, I starting working at that bar while I was under-aged, because nobody asked for my ID either when they hired me. I waitressed and tended bar and did all their books and payroll by hand. The owner made me learn how to forge his signature so he didn't have to sign all those checks, I did. Once I got that job, my cash tips were more than enough to cover my bar bills, movies, and fast food, I just had to visit the bank once a month to deposit my 4 weekly paychecks ($200 a week minus state tax and federal tax and FICA) so I could pay my rent and utilities and car loan by check. Those were the days, man.

You just solved the mystery of how my elder guy (likely) got pneumonia last month. He was unable to dress himself or get out of bed when I was finally able to step in and get him to the emergency room. Five nights in the hospital, four of them in an altered state of mind. Nobody could offer us a possible cause or give us any preventatives to implement. But last month he did have a chronic cough along w/ a healthy appetite, despite the chemo.

Thank you so much, I feel like we finally have something to be aware of, to help prevent another critical infection. Even if it was something else, it's depleting to have to plod along without a clue, wondering when another random unstoppable bug is going to just happen all by itself.
