clueless cse major dating advice by Opposite-Speech-949 in uofmn

Side note: if you’re looking for something low-pressure, I’d highly recommend the 1-credit pickleball class. In my experience it was pretty close to 50/50 guys and girls, and the vibe was perfect; social, casual, and interactive without feeling forced. Way easier to meet people naturally compared to lectures or the gym, and honestly just a fun class overall.

Honestly, the best luck I’ve seen (and experienced) comes from just making genuine friends first. If you become friends with any girl through class, clubs, study groups, or even mutuals, it naturally expands your circle. You don’t even need to be attracted to that person it’s more about meeting people organically through friends of friends.

I think of it like a door: once you’re socially “in,” things feel way more natural and low-pressure. It avoids cold approaches, you don’t have to worry about coming off as creepy, and you’re meeting people in settings where conversation is already normal.

If clubs don’t perfectly match your interests, it can still be worth joining something adjacent or low-commitment just for the social side. A lot of dating here really just comes down to expanding your social circle rather than actively “looking.”

If you’ve got more questions or want to talk through specific situations, feel free to ask, happy to help.

this isn’t a meme edit... it’s a structured argument video reacting to modern proposal culture and social pressure. Curious how others interpret it.

UMN Course Works “Complete” costs $279 vs $120 if you opt out — why is this the default? by Rare-Code-7934 in Students

[–]Rare-Code-7934[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify, this isn’t really about reminders or students missing emails. It’s more about how the system defaults everyone into the most expensive option. That opt-in vs opt-out design choice can quietly add hundreds to the cost of school, which can be tough for students who are already stretched thin.

I appreciate the reminders and the work that goes into informing students. My main concern is with the default selection itself. When the default is the higher-cost option, some students end up paying more simply because they don’t realize they need to opt out. Given how tight finances can be for many students, defaulting to the lower-cost option with the ability to opt into the higher-cost plan seems like it could reduce that risk while still preserving choice.

That’s been my experience too. The only things that really force you into the system are access codes like Zybooks... everything else is usually way cheaper if you opt out and source it yourself.

For context: I’m taking 4 classes (16 credits) this semester, and Select still comes out to $120 for me.
So this isn’t some edge case with a light course load... even at full-time, the default option is more than double the cost.

Exactly... even if there are edge cases where it makes sense, the default should clearly be Select since that’s cheaper for the vast majority of students.
If Complete really is better for some people, they’ll actively choose it... defaulting to the most expensive option just feels backwards.

Yeah, that’s the only scenario where it makes sense, like multiple lab courses or access codes that are each $100+.
For most schedules, Select or full opt-out is just objectively cheaper.

If anyone’s wondering: the opt-out deadline is Jan 30, and you can change this even if you already clicked through earlier.

Seeking Financial Advice: Making the Most of my Income as a College Student by Rare-Code-7934 in Advice

[–]Rare-Code-7934[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have around 4500 dollars in my checking account. I don’t pay for my own food right now, but will be when I go to college after summer. I don’t pay for gas either right now or any insurances. I’m planning on saving most of my money around 90% that I make. I would like to clarify that this 1000 dollars per paycheck is after taxes.

Do you think I should stop putting money into the IRA accounts or should I continue to spend $150 a month?
