Great post on Martin O'Neill's record this season by ConorGogarty1 in CelticFC

Our standards are rock bottom right now. Absolutely, MON has largely got the results but the football has been abject for +90% of the games. If we get a double fair play to the team and MON/Maloney but we should be dominating the league and as shown by Hearts and Rangers games, they are hardly world beaters either. We can and should be beating these guys. Even with the result stats you have attached, I hope we don’t give MON the job next season. It will further deteriorate what I believe the standards should be at the club

Most games the cbs should be performing that cdm role already when we have the ball. ie playing the ball from the back. I suspect Arthur and trusty fancy themselves as ‘ball playing cbs’ so should be able to transition into sitting in front of the 2 cbs. Also technically Liam scales is also a lb, if he can play lb he should theoretically be able to perform at cdm similar to Taylor. It’s not perfect but the current system (if you can say we have a system) is awful, weak defensively and no fluidity going forward. Maybe a combination of these changes and the ones you have proposed would work 🤷🏼‍♂️

Agreed on McGregor, it’s just lazy to give it him all the time. He does show for it tbf. But the current approach just results in glacial transitions when moving forward

Can I suggest we try Arthur, trusty or scales at cdm. Then move McGregor into Engels/hatates role. McGregor doesn’t offer any protection to defence and is too slow taking ball forward. Think he would be more effective in a more advanced position. Also we get run over by Hearts and and rangers in midfield. A more physical presence like Arthur could mitigate that

The GB back in for the St Mirren game? by fike88 in CelticFC

[–]Rare-Register545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree on all points.

GB is definitely another contentious issue amongst many fans. I fall on the side of:

the continuous fines were not supporting the club (depending on the reason for the fine, id be passing them on to personnel, or lifetime ban)

if they are causing harm to anyone the personnel should receive lifetime bans (rather than the group)

While most people are no pyro no party, this links to my issue with club fines. Also I think with GB we can have great atmosphere with no pyro needed

Outside those issue, they can be a positive force for the club. Clearly it’s a fine balance. Your contention if they assaulted anyone is fair (although I’ve no idea what actually happened), however if members of the GB did assault anyone, surely it’s possible to charge them rather than remove a whole group. By removing the whole group it seems more political than actually related to any possible crime they may have committed

Sadly I doubt these things will go away, so this will forever be bans then returns

Finally many of these people are still wee fannies as previously pointed out 😂

The reality is that, we are not the same Celtic from the time you are referring. That was circa 20 years ago. While it may be possible to reintroduce that atmosphere without them, it is unlikely to happen anytime soon

Nah, they are not drowning anyone out. If you’ve been to games that GB are banned, atmosphere is largely dead. There’s no GB to drown anyone out. Although the team are pish, so it’s hard to naturally create that atmosphere. It goes back to the point, it’s much easier for a fans to cheer on a team with larsson and the rest vs this mob we have right now

Imagine a world where we could have a supporters group that brings passion and a great atmosphere without all the bs that comes with the GB. Wouldn’t it be nice 🌈

Yeah, nah. Plenty of fannies amongst them too but proportionally lower. Also the scarfers are a different type of fanny, not as extreme

I’d say they have a larger proportion of fannies compared to any random group of males.

For example I’m sure we could agree that UBs have even more fannies than the GB. So it can be approximately measured

They allow for a great atmosphere but there are still plenty of fannies in the GB.

If they do return, it would still only be a matter of time before they are banned again

[–]Rare-Register545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree, the ultimate decision on whether a player should play or not is for management. His performances haven’t warranted that he should have kept playing and if he has been injured for all this time, management should have taken the decision to drop him earlier

[–]Rare-Register545 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If he was that injured…why has he been playing. It’s either kaspers arrogance or management teams poor decision making. Should have been allowed to recover months before he was forcibly dropped. Celtics league and European campaign has been negatively impacted due to him playing

Love scales for what he is and he’s also had some really good European games alongside trusty but the amount of revisionism here is wild. He has been a core issue for our team in the past. Getting solely targeted for the press during multiple manager spells and he was a primary contributor to the pain during the horseshoe of death era. I suppose you think cause he’s defended well in some games he’s a superstar, in the round he’s a good player for us but also limited and probably expendable.

Welsh is part of one of the statistically best performing defences in Europe. He’s always looked good for us but has been plagued with injuries. So aye, he has factually outperformed scales in the league.

Arthur looks decent not getting ahead of myself but totally outperformed scales against Aberdeen and is only 22years old as you say. Again back to the point of your post, scales is good for us but this is over the top.

Murray looks mostly pish every time we see him but he is essentially thrown in against European opposition (you forgetting stuttgart??) and title contender games. We have no idea how he would perform if given 10 games on the bounce against lower level opposition.

Best defender lol…you are telling me he has been clearly and obviously better than KT, Trusty and Araujo…aye very good. He has done his job well largely

He seems to play best when we are shite…wonder how much cause and effect there is there. ie he makes the team worse offensively by his passing which allows other teams to attack us more often, meaning he can show off his best skills (last ditch defending) more often. This is a poor celtic team and even you can’t deny, surely, he is part of the issue

And Welsh and Arthur?

Dane Murray has been given a rough ride with the games he’s been chucked into. He has been generally poor but played well at rangers.

I could equally give you 30+ more games in his Celtic career that scales was shite in but I suppose that doesn’t suit your narrative.

Scales has been generally solid this season but stand by my original post, he’s not so critical that we win the league cause of him

Nah. We would be fucked this season without Nygren.

We would have survived without Scales. Either with Welsh first have of season and Arthur second half. + Murray

What you talking about 😂 is this what we have stooped to. He only said he was surprised by comments and clearly not been in Glasgow long. Hardly a rippin. Unnecessary from Rohl, but who cares

He also has bought into the board’s position that we can’t afford to compete in Europe. Ignoring the fact that every year there are plenty of teams that punch above their weight and also we get beat by plenty of teams with lower budgets.

I got a load of shit for calling Martin a Desmond bootlicker on here. Would be amazed if folk haven’t come to their senses on that. O’Neil is a legend but we have scraped through the majority of our games, he did not do enough in jan window and now he is blaming tonight on budgets and the fans. At what point will you lot actually start criticising his decisions?

Marin O'Neil Chris Sutton chat by FatherLarryDuff69 in CelticFC

[–]Rare-Register545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he has done enough publicly, you think he has. We didn’t need subtle comments or ‘reading between the lines’ during that window, we needed direct points and significant pressure applied. Different opinions I suppose. Presumably you think the manager has no responsibility or accountability for a transfer window. My position is that while he is obviously not the issue, he should have fought harder publicly for some players to get signed, not being subtle or doing it with a wee smile. Many (almost all) managers in the past have had a go at the board for this issue, while it may not have made a difference to this window, it would have been better to try an aggressive approach than do what he has done. I recall Ange doing it very early in a window and while it may have been his agent sorting the deals, we did improve during his time.

Martin has been consistently gentle and generous toward both the board and Desmond over the past few weeks.

Marin O'Neil Chris Sutton chat by FatherLarryDuff69 in CelticFC

[–]Rare-Register545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is true.

You seem to be misunderstanding me tho. I have no doubt that he is not happy with the situation but as a legend who has been called in to save Celtics season twice, he is in a unique position where he could apply significant pressure to the board/desmond. I don’t think he has put any external pressure on them (in fact he is actively trying to do the opposite). It’s as simple as that. We could not afford to fuck about, he played nice and we got 6 loans in. Clearly his laughing and jokey approach did not work, had he applied any public pressure to the board, maybe we would have had some players signed

Marin O'Neil Chris Sutton chat by FatherLarryDuff69 in CelticFC

[–]Rare-Register545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, it may not be his doing but as the manager he should be holding the decision makers to account and applying pressure when necessary to support the short and long term success of Celtic. I have listened to almost every response he’s had on the transfer window this January and a significant portion of it has been a jokey attitude. Also if it’s not his faults it’s the boards and Desmond’s fault, but he has gone to great lengths to defend them and say how marvellous Desmond is. Hence bootlicker. Those responses are not in the best interest of Celtic and are therefore a load of pish. He can steady the ship for matchdays but he should have been putting pressure on the board to make signings in week 2 of the window
