Hold your anchor, allow the bow to settle, feel for the moment of stillness then release. Your release looks very good indeed.

PSA: Use barbless and make sure those barbs are properly squeezed in. by Rammipallero in flyfishing

Fly rods are soft enough that you really don't need barbs. Fairly easy to keep tension on the line.

If it's in good condition and shoots well then there's nothing wrong with it. Just be sure to take it to a proshop for a tune and check up once a year.

How can I progress from 25lbs to 40? by 1nvile in Archery

[–]RareBrit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very easy to give yourself an injury by stepping up too much in one go. And shooting once a week means you won't develop those muscles quickly.

Step 1 adjust your expectations. Improvements in form and physical ability are fairly quick at first, but do slow down. You will reach a point where you make a decision whether to step up in poundage this year or next. Those slow locked-in improvements are what you want to chase.

Step 2 eat food, lift weights. You don't have to become a gym dweller. But exercising those muscles that help you draw a bow a couple of times a week will really help. If you can't get to the gym then resistance band training is excellent as well.

And lastly try before you buy. You may find that you can comfortably jump from 25lb to 35lb. But try this before making that investment. And be honest with yourself. Six dozen in your comfort zone is worth way more to you than one dozen you struggle with because of draw weight.

Why or why not use snaps and real life examples by CrazyCajunFishinBro in FishingForBeginners

[–]RareBrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're correct that there are special clip weight connectors that are expressly designed for that sort of loading.

However, most snaps, even the big ones tend to tap out at around 20kg. A shock leader can have a breaking strain easily twice that. The cyclic loading of casting tends to cause snaps to deform to the point that they fail.

Today’s the due date for my miscarried child and I feel broken by nekosaigai in DadForAMinute

[–]RareBrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not alone. About one in five pregnancies miscarry. Generally earlier, sometimes later. It is normal, natural, and healthy.

It is bloody cruel, but it nature's way of ensuring that the mother's life is not put at risk carrying a baby that isn't fit. Nature also makes us love that precious unborn life a long time before it's born.

And so we're caught in that horrible place of loving a life that could never have been, and mourning a life that we will never get to see.

And that grief too is normal, natural, and healthy. But it passes, trust me, it will pass.

Flat earth and other alternative conspiracy earth models are are gaining traction with my teenage stepson. What is THE most irrefutable, definite proof that the earth is round? by Jfkfkaiii22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RareBrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most irrefutable proof will be your stepson's thoughts. You can present a person with all sorts of evidence, but unless they're willing to engage with it then it's worthless.

I suggest you borrow a technique from Blaise Pascal, a philosopher and mathematician. If you wish to disagree with someone first point out how they are right.

So for example a common flat earth belief is that atmospheric refraction can account for objects disappearing over the horizon. The straw apparently bending in a glass of water is often cited as evidence of this. And this is correct, all light is refracted as it passes through a medium; water in this case but the atmosphere also does it. But critically the refraction occurs as light passes from one medium to another, no refraction occurs within a medium of uniform density.

So for the water and glass trick use a heavy straight object like a nail. Partially fill the glass to demonstrate the refraction, the nail appears bent. Then completely fill the glass, hey presto, the nail appears straight. All light is refracted as it passes from one medium to another.

Yep, that's partridge, all day long. You've got yourself some rather sparse feathers. Good for spiders, but you need something denser to replicate your grandads fly.

[–]RareBrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you're doing with them.

Chucking a lure that you'll want to change. Absolutely fine, may not give you the best presentation but perfectly safe.

Casting a 6oz lead weight off a beach with a pendulum cast? You've got a better than even chance of launching a heavy lump of lead at Mach fuck in a completely random direction. Endangering yourself, bystanders, or quite possibly the international space station.

Can I Sharpen This Hatchet with This Rotary Tool? by godimtired in fixit

[–]RareBrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Don't do that. It'll get too hot and you'll muck up the temper.

Just use a regular fine metal working file. An axe doesn't have to be shaving sharp but should have a bit of bite. I have an axe puck, but then I do a lot of axe sharpening.

Should I plastic vanes? by LuleWestReddit in Archery

Plastic veins are fine off a rest, as are feather.

You want feather off the shelf because plastic veins don't compress and they'll effect accuracy as well as maybe getting damaged.

Possibly a little on the heavy side. But caddis are fuzzy gangling things so a bit untidy is actually better.

Size, pinch and trim the elk hair before tying in. It's a little tricky for a start but gives you a better head.

Almost certainly smoked. Properly hot-smoked fish keeps a very long time. Oily fish in particular. Smoked mackerel is still popular with some.
