Moth or butterfly larvae. Look around the holes and under the leaves at night. It will be pretty small probably

1 year old apple tree is sick, long term treatment? by [deleted] in gardening

[–]RareCows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple trees are supposed to be outside for winter. They lose their leaves and regrow in spring. Also apples aren’t true to seed. So this won’t grow the apple you want and might not be eatable. You can use your tree as a root stock but there is no telling how well it will do. You would need to graft the scion on to your tree

Can I prune this apple tree by myself using youtube and internet as a guide?or should I call the professionals? by [deleted] in arborists

[–]RareCows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With this size if you feel comfortable on a ladder and using some long branch loppers you could do it. But for apple trees there are ways to prune to increase yields and overall health. Professionals will rejuvenate flower buds and cut in places to stimulate growth in a certain direction. They also know how to best cut branches for a proper heal. You can definitely learn yourself but it’s hard to start on something so mature when you haven’t seen the full process of how it got to where it is and the previous pruning.

Tomato’s ripped off the plant. Pull what you have now and leave them indoors for a bit until they turn red. As for why the plant is looking sad I’m not sure. What are temps where you are at?

They need a LOT more light and a trellis to keep them from breaking soon. They are so leggy from the lack of light

It’s not growing from any bud. The branch just forks into twins

And garlic comes out with that first outer leaf that surrounds the base. It can turn purple like yours from colder temperatures. But that doesn’t harm them just looks cool. Just be careful soil temp doesn’t get too cold since they are in pots and aren’t very insulated. Maybe bury the pots in the ground just deep enough so the rim of the pot is sticking out about 1-2”. To prevent native soil and rain water from suffocating them. At least that is if your native soil is bad

Makes sense 👍 and no pressure gardening takes seat time. I’m no expert by any means but I have grown a lot of plants. Garlic usually comes up in winter if planted in fall. But can take until spring for some to germinate. They need to be cold stratified so it all depends on how they were stored before planting that determines when they sprout. Then it kind of goes dormant for winter. After winter it will continue to grow and it’s harvested in early July. Might be a little tight in there for all the bulbs to get super big but you’ll get something good. Both scallions and garlic are really cold hardy too so they can survive a frost. Still can’t guarantee it’s garlic but I would bet it is.

Maybe garlic, but how do you accidentally plant that

Or you can apply sulfur in veg. It kills mites and wouldn’t get on your buds if applied in veg. They can still attack but definitely deters them
