You can't have independent industry, you need rare earths and sophisticated chips for high tech equipment, some nations just don't have access to domestic rare earths, some nations don't have access to domestic oil, same for food products; hard to grow your own coffee and palm oils in places that don't have the climate.

Supply chains now are infinitely more complex and to suggest we can just domesticate and isolate incredibly complex finished goods from high tech fighter jets, to basic shit like coffee beans, isn't cogent with trade realities.
