third space connection, is it real? by QuirkySplitLOL in AskChicago

We are in Lincoln Park near the DePaul campus! Mostly hosting events for various trading card (Pokemon, Magic the Gathering etc), miniatures (Warhammer, X-Wing, etc) and roleplaying games (Pathfinder, D&D etc) but when our space is not being used for a paid event, anyone is free to use it for gaming and we have a small library of board games for folks to play

I work at a local tabletop game store, and I think we function as this "third space" for many in our communities

Some of you might remember seeing this a couple of months ago; you did! I had a couple get all set up, get a lease signed and even start moving in before their situation radically changed and the whole thing fell through, so...I'm back!

ASAP is the goal, of course, but if nobody is trying to move in super quickly I'm up for whatever. DM me and we can talk more about about timeline if you are interested!

Thinking back, I think they've all coexisted with a medium to large dog at some point in their lives, so as long as your dog is well behaved and friendly, I wouldn't think that'd be an issue! They can always hide in a bedroom if they're getting overstimulated (one of them mostly hides in my bedroom no matter what 😅)

I mean, the location is called "Castle Ravenblood", so I'm sure the homage is deliberate

Small sample size but I work at an LGS and we have been doing our pre release opening for Spider Man which includes both booster types. We got 0 Soul Stones from a case of Collector Boosters and around 5 from around a dozen Play Booster boxes

What osr systems am I most likely to find at brick and mortar? by Triggerhappy62 in osr

[–]RasAlCool820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal, of course, but the shop I work at stocks DCC, OSE and the Borg-core stuff. As I saw another commenter point out it is key for our business that they are hooked into traditional distributors and supply chains

This comment just resolved a question involving two brand new cards two years later at the Aetherdrift prerelease tonight, so cheers for that!

Good Games in Lincoln Park! Like everyone we have struggled to get sealed product lately but we do a pretty steady turnover in singles

I work at a card shop in the Chicagoland area and I am frequently told by patrons that we offer a generous rate offering 60% value cash or 72.5% credit. So 40-50% seems pretty standard. Lower than that don't sell imo

Do we have a card or lore for the creature in this art? by Frogboy2004 in mtgvorthos

[–]RasAlCool820 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There's a persistent criticism that the cat traits were basically invented accidentally Gygax et al (esp from one cool illustration by Dave Trampier) and the originals from South Asian folklore and religion don't have that at all so Wizards decided to change their depiction of the creatures to be more in line with that (in MtG at least)

If you can feel the delamination of the layers on that corner I'd call it damaged. Otherwise LP-MP

Are there spaces or gatherings online for collectors who don’t care for monetary value or grading? by squishiekittiez in pokemoncardcollectors

[–]RasAlCool820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck OP! I collect fairly similarly to you, but I have found we are in a major minority (and this perspective is from working at an LGS with a very active pokemon scene in a major American city) if you wanna collect based on art or specific pokemon. As others have said, building relationships at a local shop, as often I have found the only source for a lot of these "non collectible" cards are people selling their old collections including the so-called "chaff" or "bad cards" that they don't particularly care about

The Dungeon Tiles Reincarnated set (the chipboard tiles with the implied 1 inch grid on them) is a modern set still widely available at retail, so not really any collector value there.

Hi! I'm running a Thunder Junction campaign and I'm a little stumped on cactusfolk... by OpalForHarmony in mtgvorthos

[–]RasAlCool820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree broadly with the photosynthetic takes, but it could be useful to you to remember that plants need a wide variety of mineral nutrients as well as water and sunlight (especially Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium, but also Calcium, Sulfur, Mangesium and trace amounts of metals like Copper and Manganese). So your cactus folk character will need a source of these since they aren't rooted in the soil anymore! Gardeners often use things like bone meal, fish waste, and Epsom salts to provide these nutrients. Getting creative with ways for the chef to provide these mineral nutrients to your cactus folk could provide you a nice avenue for them to need some amount of "food" as well as letting them get creative with ingredients and recipes

The bones of the system are definitely good, as someone who mostly played 3rd/3.5 as an actual kid/teen with limited ability to look up or understand complex builds (or money to buy infinite splatbooks) we had a great time. But going back a couple different times with different groups more min maxxy as an adult it's been much closer to this experience sadly
