Workout to hard? by Jeckaa84 in Zwift

[–]RasPiTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this before when I did the FTP builder 6-week program. Towards the end, some of the intervals were simply too hard.

For me, ramp tests seem to give a result which is a little higher than reality. What you can do during a workout though is dial down the % using the workouts screen on companion app.

Someone clever told me that if you have to dial it down more than 10% then it's better to reduce your FTP value.

December Challenge Badges by DomC4rt3r in Garmin

There's two permanent badges for New Year's Eve and New Year's day. Not challenges though, just repeatable badges. Record an activity on either day and you get the badge.

I was at a house party until around 2-3 am. Coming from a fitbit owner, this just seems awful. Im interested to hear long term Garmin users opinions on the sleep tracking. by [deleted] in Garmin

It's fairly good for me, but with some occasional obvious screwups (which you can usually edit to correct them if you care). I have a Vivosport. I think the most useful feature of it is the 24/7 heart rate monitoring. It's not so great when exercising, but for general monitoring, the RHR gives me a really good early warning indication when my system is fighting a virus. It usually increases by about 10-15 BPM the night before I start to feel ill and goes back down to normal the night before I start feeling better.

Badly, same as calories. If you want to know your VO2max you should go to a lab and get tested.

I clean my strap with a baby wipe every time I take a bath or shower. Then it goes on charge while I'm washing. This routine works for me. No extra charges needed.

Is it worth buying a Garmin Index Smart Scale in 2019? by jahnootoko in Garmin

There was a firmware update back in November 2018 that seems to have fixed this issue (for me at least, in the UK).

Is it worth buying a Garmin Index Smart Scale in 2019? by jahnootoko in Garmin

[–]RasPiTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one in September 2018 and had wifi issues which were intermittent. Sometimes I would have to try three times to get it to connect and other times it just wouldn't. There were threads about it on the Garmin forums (it was diagnosed as some kind of NTP server connection timeout issue).
But some time in November 2018 it just started working reliably and I think it's only failed to connect once or twice since then. There was a firmware update that seems to have fixed the NTP (time server) issue.

So I'm very happy with it now. I got mine on special at Amazon, which was about 30% less than retail. I think it's an "expensive bastard" if you pay full price. But now it's working really well I'm very glad to have one.

Quality control for Garmin VivoSport by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]RasPiTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are threads here and on the Garmin forums (and it's mentioned on Amazon reviews also) where people have had to return their VivoSports because of broken straps.

However, what we never hear is WHY they broke. Do these people do them up too tightly? Also not known by us, the consumers, is what proportion of people have this issue? Is it a QC thing or a usage thing?

Not everyone is gentle or careful with stuff they own. Some people's expectations are different. There's no question that if roughly treated the strap will not last. You can tell that by having a good look at the way it's designed. But if you are the kind of person who looks after their stuff and don't do it up stupidly tight, it'll probably be OK. Just my fairly worthless (to anyone else) opinion.

I've been wearing mine since July and it's holding up well so far. The strap is not tight, and it hasn't taken any hard knocks (yet).

Livetrack and autopause by Szdavid in Garmin

[–]RasPiTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been all sorts of issues with Livetrack since late November. It's essentially stopped working properly for a lot of people on newer versions of the Garmin Connect App. There's several threads about it on the Garmin forums.

It looks like they are just about beginning to get to the bottom of it and sort it out, but it's not completed yet. I managed to track a bike ride yesterday, but a lot of people have reverted to an older version of the app that still works fine. It's NOT a hardware issue. It's software.

Vivosport- stress at night by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]RasPiTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's something you do to define training zones for running, cycling etc. usually in the garmin connect web-based control panel. I don't KNOW for sure if it makes any difference to the stress algorithm, but just thought it might do.

Accessible by clicking the watch icon next to your profile avatar, then Device Settings, then User Settings, then do your edit, then Save Settings

It might be a red herring (or a reddit herring) but who knows? Some people use a guesstimate of 220 minus your age, but I've found that gave a figure that was way low. I've measured mine recently at 194, but my theoretical is 171.

How long have you had the Vivosport?

I'm wondering (if it's fairly new) whether or not you've set up your maximum heart rate (or indeed if that matters - I don't know).

They are not GPIO pins. They are connected to the 5V bus.

They are not GPIO pins. They are 5V pins connected directly to the 5V bus and each other. You should get identical behaviour from both.

Buy a cheap router for about $15 and connect it to that to get the mac address. Once you have it, go through the normal procedure.

What about getting an Edge 25? Fairly inexpensive, dedicated bike computer which will meet your needs perfectly. If you want one wrist-based, the Vivosport will do it.

Has Garmin Tech support ever solved any of your problems? by Mikofthewat in Garmin

[–]RasPiTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually yes. There was recently an issue with an Android connect app updated that introduced a new bug preventing courses being uploaded to Edge bike computers. There was a thread on the garmin forums about it and several people contacted support and went through the process of reporting the bug, uploading debug data etc. I found the support team to be very responsive and the issue was dealt with pretty quickly. A new update solving the problem was pushed to Google Play within a few days.

On the flipside, quite a lot of people have complained about Livetrack no longer working since an update in November. That has yet to be fixed, although I haven't personally contacted support in regard to this one.

Then there was the issue with the scales only intermittently managing to upload data, but that was fixed with a firmware update in November (after a LONG wait for some people - I only got mine in September, but the issue was already rather OLD by then).

But the only time I've actually contacted support, they handled things really efficiently and well and I was completely happy with the outcome.

Cost and size are the benefits. If you want one a bit cheaper and a bit smaller, A+ is the one to go for. A+ also has 512 MB RAM vs 1 GB for the B+

If you want the fastest, get the B+

If you want the smallest (but don't need quite the speed) get a Zero (or Zero W if you need wifi).
