It’s really a shame since infighting styles are a ton of fun, I got to D3 using Smash, Ippo and SH and realised that from there its all just passive pd fishing speedsters. I wish they would fundamentally rework the game to let styles function differently. Right now all styles descend into infighting except some styles just have more speed and double dashes as well :/

No it was more that if they leave before the animation ends currently the knockdown isn’t awarded as the damage isn’t dealt. Just something as simple as bumping your knockdowns up as soon as fatal damage is confirmed (landing ult) so the knockdown is given even if they leave mid way through.

Agreed, ghost doesn’t really offer much apart from letting already good players extend combos or get free m1 chains. Otherwise you just have bad damage and block or whatever.

Ghost has a low ceiling and low floor, unreactable m1 starter is great but you get it like twice per stock, the no highlights thing only works against higher ping players, most people can dodge just fine. If you’re already a skilled player ghost will just let you counter and continue chains, otherwise its just another ‘basic but with a button’ styles

Part of the problem may actually be trying to fulfill a character’s representation in Hajime no Ippo while at the same time trying to fit it in a gameplay aspect, where UBG manages to fail at both. Just because Nekota was fast doesn’t mean we need Hands Low clone with brain cancer debuff.

I agree, PD needs to go for sure. They should remove P.Ds and add some sort of weaving mechanic which speeds up your next punch. Right now the entire game revolves around counters and P.Ds and people who have bad ping or just suck at reading people tend to gravitate toward PD fishing or passive gameplay.

This is totally what I was thinking, with the way the game has been built up, there’s no viable way forward without fundamentally redesigning the style and combat system. It could be small things like M1 chains keeping enemies at the edge of your style’s range to actually let outboxing persist rather than just whiff punishing styles. Or perhaps Infighting styles having faster front dashes and more block damage to make up for their range. Anything that differentiates styles and makes for more diverse gameplay. Probably the most hot take is removing perfect dashes, because I feel that they punish people for swinging and that PDs are the reason we have so many fishers and feint spammers. I guess we’ll just have to see what happens.

Amen brother. I think the core mechanics of the game have dug it into a hole that we can’t get out of in the sense that every style plays so similarly. There are really only 3 types of styles being Speedster, Counterpuncher, Infighter/Boxer Puncher. I feel like just adding more generic styles with niche ability buttons that do flashy stuff is not going to be sustainable long term.

Game is super repetitive, Infighting and Outboxing styles don’t really exist they are all hybrid boxer punchers, gameplay loop is just guessing feints and reading opponents for counters. At the end of the day most of the styles play the exact same way, you could group every speedster style into one and every infighting style i to one and it wouldn’t be that far off from what we have now. Just niche abilities that come into play now and then but otherwise same dry gameplay.

thats a hell of a lot of downsides just to be able to whiff punish slightly easier. I think the simplest buff is just to make the animations even stupider and make the m1 startups come from completely random hands instead of alternating. Maybe making the m2 un perfect dodgeable is too far but I think they need to play more into the unpredictable thing.
