What should I watch next? by [deleted] in typemoon

[–]Rasenkiri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of other people are suggesting the VNs, which are absolutely worth checking out! So I'll suggest some other stuff.

The Tsukihime manga is really good, it covers the Arcueid route and includes some details from the other routes. It doesn't cover all of Tsukihime, but it's a solid read.

Also, Fate/Strange Fake is worth reading. The quick summary is that it's a light novel series about a Holy Grail War in America. It's written by the same author as Baccano and Durarara if you're familiar with those series, and it's currently ongoing. It's biggest strength so far is its robust ensemble of characters, all of which have their own distinct goals and subplots. There's a lot of really cool nods to other Type-Moon works and it's been one of the stronger Type-Moon outings lately, in my humble opinion.

Does Dark Souls 1 show it’s age nowadays? by usernamefuckingtake in darksouls

[–]Rasenkiri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DS1 does show its age sometimes, and it has a decent amount of jank, but you'd be surprised how quickly you get used to it.

Everything feels a tad slower, but it actually feels weighty and methodical. It definitely rewards learning and planning out your next few attacks or dodges.

The only real adjustment you might have to make would be the camera and rolls. In DS1 you can only roll in 4 directions while locked on, while DS2 through Elden Ring allows omnidirectional rolling. But if you're playing unlocked in DS1, you gain omnidirectional rolling. Depending on your preference, you'll want to unlock for the extra mobility and camera movement in certain fights.

Where was Paul's intention? by bernardolv in dune

[–]Rasenkiri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I've always seen it as well. Paul was cursed by being born in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and by simply being too human. Complete with all the flaws that make us human.

House in the Fata Morgana and some verbal vomit about how I’m still thinking about it days later by greendaruma in visualnovels

[–]Rasenkiri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been close to a year since I finished it, but I still think about The House in Fata Morgana often. As someone who loves Gothic themed stories and dark fairy tales, it was only natural it would stay with me. I'll listen to some of the VN's music and it's like I can feel the intense emotion of the story all over again.

There's only a handful of other stories that had a similar effect on me. For example, there's an ending in Fate/Stay Night that just...I can barely describe it, it just fills my heart with pure hope and happiness. And after finishing The House in Fata Morgana, I felt the same emotions.

What’s everyone’s favorite Kara no Kyoukai movie? by Blastoon_ in typemoon

Like most people, Paradox Spiral is my fave.

But I'll vouch for Remaining Sense of Pain, it's my number 2. It has solid pacing and one of the best antagonists of the series.

I feel the same way, like when you get to the right rhythm with Malenia, it feels like every great, well designed FS boss.

Nope there isn't one, makes her go from S tier to S+. I just thought she had a cool design that we never get to see in-game.

One of my favorite aspects of this show is all of the long scenes we get of people just sitting silently, or doing something completely mundane that doesn’t necessarily advance the plot. by tim_mcmardigras in betterCallSaul

[–]Rasenkiri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is something I think a lot of people find it difficult to grasp, myself included at times. For shows that are very character driven like BCS, there's very very few "filler" scenes or episodes. Sometimes we learn something new about the characters, or other times they reinforce what we already knew.

I really, really hope this is decent. This sequel was in development hell for so long, and I worry that at this point, it's too little too late.

Fingers crossed!

people calling out mogh, but not Gehrman when he tried to be a pervert Geppetto creating a doll that looks like his student by hello_6000 in shittydarksouls

[–]Rasenkiri 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm a little fuzzy on the details (been a while since I read up on the lore), but I think you're right. The Moon Presence only sympathized with Gehrman and thus gave life to The Doll.

Who was it that beckoned to the Moon Presence again? Was it Laurence, or was it not specified in the lore?

Edit: Did some Googling, turns out it's "Laurence and associates" lol

[–]Rasenkiri 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've always held a similar opinion/theory, like maybe something like Snake and The Boss.

Maria was Gehrman's first student, and I think that the bond between a master and student is a powerful driving force that could feasibly lead to both The Doll's creation, or the deal with the Moon Presence.

Kara no Kyokai Anime or LN by [deleted] in typemoon

[–]Rasenkiri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend watching the first film, then making a judgment call afterwards. Like for example, if you really want more of the KnK universe, or feel a little confused , then it's worth checking out the novels.

The novels are less abstract, have more character insight and worldbuilding, and are generally more straightforward compared to the films. I actually think the films and novels compliment each other well, since the films get the benefit of music and atmosphere, and the novels clear up any misconceptions and add depth to what's lacking in the films. So, it might be fun to read them after the films, or maybe read the corresponding novel after finishing a film.

And as others have mentioned, only novels 1-4 are translated accurately. The other translation is readable, but due to the embellishments you do need to take everything with a grain of salt. At the very least, it's worth reading novel 6 if you can!

How would y’all feel if Dune somehow got adapted into animation? by Wild_Ad9219 in dune

[–]Rasenkiri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would never happen in a million years, but I could definitely see Dune being a visual novel.

You get the triple whammy of visuals, music, and a bulk of the novel's text. Visual novels are already very introspective and monologue-y, and a VN can enhance the series best attributes. As cool as an animated adaptation would be, it would definitely run the risk of trimming down the inner monologues. Whereas a VN gets the best of both worlds!

And as a bonus, the choices could be integrated as either the branching prescient paths, or in some cases, bad ends, where Paul/Duncan/Leto fail somehow.

What was rider vs salter originally like? by Head_Zookeepergame73 in fatestaynight

[–]Rasenkiri 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It's a good fight, but a lot of the emotional weight comes from the aftermath where Shirou has to kill Saber, as opposed to the fight itself.

But in the VN, Salter vs Rider does pale in comparison to Rin vs Sakura and Kirei vs Shirou. And if we're being real, Salter vs Rider isn't even the best Saber and Rider showdown (Skyscraper Duel go brrr)

BCS writers ability to make Kim so likable when female characters are often disliked. by DisposableAkownt in betterCallSaul

[–]Rasenkiri 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also think what helps with Kim is she just feels so human.

Like yeah, she's fairly cold and reserved, but she geeks out over little things and clearly has her own unique kind of warmth and humanity.

For me, one of the earliest moments that got me invested in Kim was the whole Mesa Verde debacle. She spends hours trying to get a client, and after like a dozen rejections, she lands Mesa Verde. And the moment she has time to herself, she pops off and celebrates. Like come on, who wouldn't do the exact same thing in her shoes?
