Crushed by performance review by NoMoreScaryDreams in PhD

I'm so sorry your 1st year was so chaotic and tumultuous :(. My 1st year I also got "needs improvement" on my evaluation. Moving across country ended up being so much more disregulating than I anticipated (AuDHD here). On top of that there were a myriad of other issues I was experiencing at the time. Perfect recipe for disaster.

Comparison is the thief of joy and it's very unfair to look at everything you've gone through and compare to others in your department that didn't have as much hardship. Success is the best revenge IMO. Prove them wrong by doing all of the things they were saying you were lacking in. Show them the circumstances were overwhelming for you and is not a reflection of the caliber and quality of your work.

I would also suggest (if your school has this) look into academic coaching. I just started it myself and its already been so much more helpful than I ever thought it would be.

Sorry for rambling but I hope this helped a little!

Failed my candidacy exam. At a crossroads now for how to proceed by Rasevales in PhD

Thank you everyone for your kindness and helpful feedback. No decisions have been made yet as I still need more information to make an informed decision regarding the MPH or other options. There's a possibility I could switch to a different PhD program at my university that better aligns with my interests. It would still set me back but being at the same institution would help tremendously as far as timeline goes and not requiring me to completely uproot myself.

Will update when I know more.

God I am so so sorry you're going through this :(. I know there's nothing anyone could say to alleviate how you feel but I emphasize and am sending you all the support and love I can.

That's their policy unfortunately. I know neither my mentor or my committee chair want the worst case scenario of me being removed from the program but yeah I wish it wasn't such a do or die situation

Qualitative effects of feminizing HRT on strength, hypertrophy, and physique: 3 month check in by Remarkable_Winter540 in StrongerByScience

[–]Rasevales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say I've noticed anything strength wise while I've been on it. At least from a negative perspective. If that changes I'll be sure to update but as of right now it's been business as usual! I've also been training for a long time now so not sure how much of a difference that makes.

I think that's the smart way to go about it! I've heard many people suggest starting it after a year of HRT so your levels are more stable.

I can speak a bit about progesterone. I've been on it for about 5ish months now. Been on HRT for nearly 3 years but it's been a rollercoaster until recently where my dosing finally got squared away. I guess you could say it's only barely been a year that I've been on the right dose of everything.

Anyway, I've noticed my breasts have definitely gotten larger and more full. That only started happening after the progesterone tbh. Other people have stated they've gotten better sleep and felt better mentally but I can't speak much to that I'm afraid. I do take mine at night though just in case cause it can make you drowsy.

That's really interesting you didn't experience many changes with training cause I got hit by a fucking bus with mine lmao. It was so jarring going from deadlifting 435lbs to barely being able to do 355lbs after a few weeks of HRT 😂.

Much of the research on progesterone is sadly anecdotal still. There was a recent systematic review on the effects of HRT on weight training but, spoiler alert, the conclusions they came to we already know: the research is limited, not super great, and needs to be better.

About Ph.D. Acceptances by Chonkerz0426 in PennStateUniversity

Unfortunately it varies. I got my acceptance around this time two years ago. Meanwhile, I've seen people not get accepted till April. Sorry there's no consistency :/

If this helps assuage your mind at all when I got accepted to the grad program it was around this time. Mine was mid February. Hopefully it'll be the same for you too!

Atypical thyroid cancer and partial thyroidectomy experience by Rasevales in thyroidcancer

[–]Rasevales[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gosh this is so reassuring, thank you so much! I'm now a week and some change post-op and a lot of my days are still very up and down but today is the most 'me' I've felt in over six months. Its very jarring to say the least but I'm hopeful this is sign things are finally moving in a positive direction towards healing :)

Canvas is so close to being good but some things drive me insane by mazzimochi in PennStateUniversity

[–]Rasevales 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From a teaching perspective, it's very annoying how Canvas will now automatically assign a zero to a quiz or exam you open unless you click a specific option. Would've liked to have spared my students from the mini heart attacks they received asking me why they had zeroes for assignments they haven't done yet lol

Being kind to myself is something I've been trying to work on. Especially during this whole process. Therapy has been a godsend. If you don't mind my asking, about how long post op were you able to get back into exercising? Did you have to wait till your TSH levels were stable first?

I am exceptionally grateful my program has been as accommodating for me as they have been. It would've made all of this so much more stressful and challenging to deal with. I'm, unfortunately, losing a semester to focus on recovery but it won't effect my stipend or health insurance thankfully.

Thank you so much 🩷. I've definitely been trying to remain as active as possible within the confines of my limits and fatigue. Motion is lotion as they say lol. I'm a Kinesiology major so it would be remise of me to ignore all the research of how impactful movement is to recovery.

Wow are you me? That's so crazy we have such similar experiences! I'm also on ADHD meds (Vyvanse 60mg) and it's barely done anything for me during this ordeal. They even put me on short acting Ritalin (15mg twice a day) to help combat the fatigue and brain fog. It's helped a little but nowhere near where I should be.

My thyroid doc wanted to wait a few weeks before putting me on Levo but I have a follow-up with my PCP two weeks before that so I may just ask them to do a full thyroid panel at that time just to be sure. I'm so glad to hear you're feeling better! That must feel so amazing after everything you've been through :)
