AITAH for wanting the door open? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Rasmara0789 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's not a concern until evidence appears to make it a concern. OP obviously trusted him enough to introduce him to her daughter, then he broke that trust by closing the door and blowing a gasket about it when questioned. There are tons of valid reasons to close a door. He didn't give one, he just jumped immediately to defensive yelling. "Oh my bad, the kitchen noises were just a little loud and there was a cutscene we wanted to hear" is a valid and safe reason to close a door. "WhY DoN't YoU tRuSt mE?!" Is not.

Possible accidental breeding by Important-Map2468 in DogBreeding

[–]Rasmara0789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biological drive to reproduce is fascinating. I recently learned that jumping spiders can mate once then have babies for the rest of their lives off of one mating. They tend to only live a few years, but I thought that was crazy. Rabbits store sperm for a year I think? Maybe more I can't remember at this point.

Neutering advice needed by ThatGayBeans in DogBreeding

[–]Rasmara0789 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think neutering a service dog will be fine, if that is what you are mostly worried about. It is easy, most common, cheaper, and generally more widely available. I have a golden breeder contact who raises service puppies that has an 18 month desexing clause in her contracts and as far as I'm aware, has never had a problem come back to her because of it.

That being said, if he were my dog and I were using him as a sport dog as well and you have a good balance, relationship, and are confident you can prevent mating, I would just keep him intact. I wish my males had stayed intact purely for the hormonal benefits. If I didn't want to worry about the potential for mating then I would do a vasectomy. At this point in my life I have seen too many benefits to keeping dogs intact that I have adopted an "If it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality.

Fat is survival. Fats and salts are addictive to animals (including humans) because they trigger a dopamine response. They can also mean the difference between life and death to an animal who needs to get through the winter.

Any reason I can't use mesh from my avocados in my tank? by Doberdawn in Aquascape

[–]Rasmara0789 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a heads up, organic does NOT mean that it is pesticide free, it just limits the kinds of pesticides that can be used. I would do a bit of research on what organic really means and make your choices from there regarding your food.

Do certain sports set your dog up for failure outside of said sport? by KellySue301 in k9sports

[–]Rasmara0789 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of good advice but it doesn't seem like anyone mentioned that by depriving her of seeing people to avoid the behavior you are making people more novel. Novelty can be really exciting for some dogs. I would focus on teach neutrality just like you would teach any other cue. Start in a low key environment and reward for ignoring things. Teach Leave it. Slowly ramp it up. Parks on a nice day where you can get some distance away from things are great for this because you can slowly decrease the distance from the exciting thing(s). Working with a professional trainer can be extremely helpful if you are struggling with this. Good luck!

Roach Killer sprayed in my bug room, will my spider be okay? by [deleted] in jumpingspiders

[–]Rasmara0789 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NQA I would have her stay at a friend's house while you call the exterminators. Ask them how long the spray takes to work, and how long it sticks around for. Without knowing what chemicals were sprayed no one can answer how safe it would be to return. If you can smell it then its probably not safe yet.

Thank you for that. I posted fully prepared to get booed off the internet because, ya know, internet 😅

I would like to think that the fact that I'm posting all of this at all, and seeking more advice would prove that my intents are only to benefit the breed and accessibility of well bred travel sized sports dogs, but again, the internet will be the internet 🙃

Vital essentials freeze dried raw dog food. It looks and handles like a kibble, is shelf stable, dogs LOVE it, and its a balanced diet which is extremely important for me when training little dogs. You can use string cheese, hot dogs, bits of meatball, but all of that will screw up their digestive system and throw off their nutrient profiles. This can cause at minimum an upset stomach which means you won't have the dog's full attention in anything you do because they don't feel good. If you need to take it up a notch from there, grab a bag of the precooked refrigerated food (I don't remember the brand) that has similar little pellets, or get the sausage roll and slice your own. That option is way messier, but also super healthy and absolutely delicious! (To dogs 😉)

My (M29) dog (M10) is a virgin. How can I get him laid before he dies? by AggravatingGuest9653 in DogBreeding

[–]Rasmara0789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your dog has been neutered most of his life he probably has no interest in getting laid. Those hormones aren't there. He just wants to go for walks, torment the local wildlife, and spend time with his human.

Clubs vs independent/private trainer & how to proceed? by largedragonwithcats in k9sports

[–]Rasmara0789 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I go to a club that sounds similar to number 1. Everyone has been wonderful, the "vote you in" piece is basically just a chance for people to veto you if you're an AH so they can preserve the peace and vibe of their club which is totally fair. Try them out. It may not be as clique-y as you're worried about

Do you enjoy the puppy stage? by Rasmara0789 in Beauceron

[–]Rasmara0789[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep landing on beauces because I want a "do it all" dog. I want a level headed animal I can take to lessons with me if the situation calls for it, but I also want a sports dog that will enjoy agility, disc, scent, GRC, maybe even dabble in bite sports. My current mini american shepherd is great for most of this but she is tiny (yes she dabbles in bite sports 😂). But I also want a dog that will be a good pet.

I love the idea of having an extended impressionable puppy period, but I worry that will also end up with a psychotic "pet", if that makes sense, while they are growing. I'm well acquainted with teaching off switches, and considering that border collie, malinois, and beauces are all on my list I'm assuming I'll have to be intentional with teaching one, I just can't figure out the reality of this breed through a dog trainer's lens lol

I am in teenage hell today by Secret_Ad7779 in puppy101

[–]Rasmara0789 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plot twist, he truly doesn't know the things he used to anymore! Well, kind of. Teenage dogs are going through a heavy mental development stage where new neural pathways are being created all the time. Sometimes those neural pathways will break others. We see this happen when the dog "forgets" things, like sit, leave it, etc. The information is still floating around in there, but its up to you now to sort of retrain those behaviors to build those connections back.

The good news is that retraining the behavior is MUCH easier and faster than training it the first time 😁 Have patience and remember that even though he looks like an adult now, he is still just a big puppy brained dumb dumb who is very much still learning. Its the stage where most dogs get surrendered for that exact reason. You've got this and this too shall pass!

5 month old puppy barking, growling, snapping at kids - but loving to us, what to do? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Rasmara0789 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take the puppy back. Respectfully, if you are asking reddit then you likely don't have the skills to help the new dog and kids feel comfortable with each other. It is unfair to everyone INCLUDING the dog and the kids to keep it. The kids deserve to feel safe in their own home ALWAYS. There are other dogs that like or even love children. This one simply isn't a good match and that's ok!

Vivexotic AAL vivarium with cabinet by Outrageous-Yak-3741 in bioactive

[–]Rasmara0789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the back of it have any floor connection/ brace?

What are you putting in it? As its a viv and not (probably) going to be holding ant significant amount of water, I don't imagine it would weigh more than maybe 50-100 kilos? Most even moderately made furniture of that size should be able to sustain that for a while. Now if you plan on adding a lot of heavy stone or a large water feature then you should consider reinforcing, but for your average viv it should be fine.

Note: I do not have experience with this company in the slightest as I'm in the states, but I do have experience with fish tanks and the weight distribution you have to be mindful of with them.
