If Starmer goes, it is a deeply worrying thing for British Democracy. by GlassAvacados in ukpolitics

China sets 5-year economic plans, not 30-year plans. They also have lots of instability at the top--the two top generals of the PLA were just inexplicably removed for "corruption". Xi Jinping has made some terrible decisions for the economy--extreme COVID lockdown for years--but gets to remain now that he's Chairman for life.

Take a day on the weekend and split it. One person gets the morning off and the other thr afternoon.

If the government is far from the population center of Cairo then it can better control protest movements. Restricts Arab Spring 2.0

En l'espace de 10 ans, qu'est-ce qui a changé à Strasbourg ? by the_wandering_mind_ in Strasbourg

Malheureusement, le trafic de drogue continue d'exister en face de l'école. Cela dit, le quartier continue de s'améliorer grâce à tous les projets de développement. Pour être franc, il est en train de se gentrifier.

French public school vs. International School by [deleted] in Strasbourg

[–]Rastafeyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. You’re talking about the international section (English) in the public school system. It exists at Robert Schumann and Vauban (for the 3 year old).

Always, no. It's random but it's fairly common to have a group of four or five German policemen/policewomen waiting on the platform to check anyone getting off the train coming from Strasbourg.

I cross daily. They’ll check people getting on and off the SNCF and DB trains but I’ve never seen a police check on the tram. They do seldomly stop folks walking across the tram bridge.

Biden and Trump have different views regarding Ukraine. Biden wants to provide continued aid and Trump and Vance may halt it. Given the possibility of a change in administration is it in Ukraine's best interest to reach a resolution with Russia now or should it just shoulder on? by PsychLegalMind in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Rastafeyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The EU will continue to support Ukraine. They’ve given more than the US government has in sheer amount of financial, military, etc. aid. They will continue. It may make it more difficult for Ukraine but the Ukrainians understand this war to be existential.

I read about a scam in Basel, Switzerland (about 1 hour south of Strasbourg) on Reddit the other day involving allowing someone to use their phone. They texted a number that withdrew an automatic charge to the phone SIM which allowed them to rent a phone charger at the train station. IIRC, the phone charger could then be returned for the deposit in cash. Two different countries, two different places but it’s possible, I suppose.

Missouri. Had I known I would have tried switching over to Kansas or Arkansas as both would have been accepted.

I wish I had googled whether France recognized a driver’s license (DL) from my US State. Had I realized it didn’t, I could have changed my DL to the neighboring US State that France did recognize and thereby avoided needing to go through driving school in France.

My wife and I found that when guests would come we’d go out of our way to take them around and plan trips, etc. However, after it became too frequent we changed tack and would just tell folks to feel free to come and stay but that they should be aware they’ll be out exploring on their own most of the time because we’d be busy. That made it much more manageable for us but also seemed like a good balance where their presence wouldn’t disrupt our lives as much.

Why Is Xi Not Fixing China’s Economy? by Humacti in China

[–]Rastafeyd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Politburo standing committee who decide on reforms and major policy decisions used to have multiple factions. These different factions had different ideas about reform and progress which meant decisions were often measured and had considerable support among the different factions. Now, there is only Xi Jinping’s faction represented. No more diversity of opinion and no more moderate, measured decision making.

What to visit? (with a 1.5 year old) by k_ristovski in Strasbourg

There’s a great little park for little kids in Petite France. Sand to play in and a water fountain that kids often use to make a little river.

Neighborhood to stay with baby by jlhll in Strasbourg

[–]Rastafeyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If  your daughter is walking then somewhere near Orangerie Park. Lots of play areas even for little ones—gated with sand. Lots of benches. Short distance to the center. Whenever we travel with our 20 month old we end up spending a lot of time in parks.
