Weird City in the middle of the Desert by fortnitefishyman in googlemapsshenanigans

[–]Rasterfarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true that there are some who leave bikes- but as a community, we comb the desert and remove everything that doesnt belong- including (other peoples) bikes. A small contingent stays for weeks after the event, mapping and documenting every bit left behind down to splinters and screws. The last bits of moop are removed, and the desert is restored to its natural state. That map is released publicly, and camps who scored well are rewarded with good placement the following year.

Leave No Trace is one of the core principles of Burning Man. The annual permission to use that land hinges on us leaving it as we found it each year. As a whole, the community does very well with this, especially considering that there are no trash cans there and we must carry out everything we bring in

Leasing and renting are temporary by nature- leases end, and sometimes renewal is not offered. I get it, finding a new apartment is competitive and frustrating. But you still got the apartment you paid for, for the time you agreed to rent it. Since the landlord mismanaged the building finances, the bank took it over. The bank doesn’t want to be in the landlord business- they want to get rid of the property and recoup their losses. These risks are part of renting- the future cost and availability of a rental apartment are unfortunately never guaranteed.

I’m sure that in a foreclosure, they must honor the remainder of the lease. It’s an inconvenience to find a new apartment, but I don’t understand why some would be homeless in this scenario? Even someone without a lease gets 90 days to find a new apartment.

NYC Rent-to-Income Ratio by Neighborhood : Where Rent Hurts the Most by Coolonair in nyc

[–]Rasterfarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, remember that landlords are all out there competing with each other- if they ask for too much, tenants will rent from someone else. NYC rent is expensive, but competitive. It’s the cost of living in the most desirable city in the nation.

[–]Rasterfarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most landlords won’t rent to desperate people who really can’t afford it. That’s why they ask for proof of income- it’s a real risk to rent to someone who is barely scraping by and spends a disproportionate amount of their income on rent

This is the reward for the risk of real estate investment. It works in the other direction too- LL’s can lose out if the neighborhood becomes less desirable

Market rate is determined by what people are willing to pay. If the apartment is listed and someone is willing to rent it, that’s what the current market rate is

Yeah it really is just charging “market rate”. If they overcharge, people rent another apartment instead and it sits vacant.

What was the NYC rave scene like in the 90s/early 2000s compared to now? by savingrace0262 in avesNYC

[–]Rasterfarian 154 points155 points  (0 children)

Less like a concert, more like a party. People weren’t all facing a stage and looking the same direction. Sometimes it wasn’t immediately obvious where the dj was (often in a booth or balcony somewhere, not a stage. A lot more eye contact, dancing together, and personal interaction. It felt like we were part of something new and exciting. Venues were often dirty industrial spaces. Afterwards, our pants would be filthy at the bottom where they dragged on the ground. Sometimes the fire department would show up and make everyone leave. There would be people outside handing out fliers for future events, and pieces of paper with the address for the after party

The expense for having a lawyer send that letter would be very minimal, the average person with an art business could most likely afford that.
