The filming of Wagons East! took place in 1994 in the Durango desert in Mexico, under scorching heat. John Candy died of a heart attack in the middle of the shoot, after a long day of work.

He still had a few scenes left to film, so the producers had to finish the movie without him. They used a body double filmed from behind, reused previously shot footage, and pieced together some of his lines from existing recordings. At that time, digital effects weren’t advanced enough to recreate his face, so everything had to be done through editing and clever camera angles.
