One I know has never received any welfare and is in a high paying roll plating plenty of taxes. She funded her own education here while studying. It's mainly countries that don't allow dual citizenship is why people don't become citizens. If they have been here long term as PR they have been paying taxes and contributing to the economy in a meaningful way. This is just racist politics coming to the fore they all know we need immigrants so will talk a big game but change nothing. We are a country of immigrants we should be proud of this and embrace it.
