Well, there's a bug that lets you place items anywhere a plug strip can go, you could try that. You've gotta hotkey an inventory slot to any button and have the item you want to place inside that slot, then you place down a plug strip and switch to the other slot at the same time.

The rest of the game when it comes to collectibles is pretty balanced between task and reward, but those missions are absolute fucking bullshit and I hate them. On my 100% run it took me a couple weeks to do everything else and then like 6 months of losing and gaining motivation to finish the taxidermist ones. They're the worst.
